Chapter 1

The lights of the private club blurred gold through the cab window, and I pressed my palm against the box in my lap. Champagne. The good kind, from the vineyard Nathaniel liked to pretend he knew everything about. Tomorrow, Stewart Industries would ring the opening bell on Wall Street. Three years of ramen dinners and quiet phone calls to men who owed me favors, and tomorrow it would all be worth it.

The hostess at the door knew me. She waved me toward the private rooms without asking, because I'd been coming here for months, smoothing things over, making calls Nathaniel never knew I made. The hallway was dim and carpeted, the kind of quiet that swallows footsteps. His door was open a crack. Light spilled out in a thin gold line.

I heard her voice first. Soft. Practiced. "I never stopped thinking about you, Nate. Not once. Not even in Paris."

I knew the name Adelina before I ever saw her face. Nathaniel used to say it in his sleep sometimes, low and half-formed, and I'd told myself it meant nothing. I stood in that hallway and watched through the gap — a woman with pale gold hair and a red dress cut to look effortless, sitting close enough to Nathaniel that her knee touched his.

"I never stopped either," he said.

My chest went hollow, like someone had reached in and scooped something out.

"What about her?" Adelina asked. Meaning me. Meaning the woman who had rebuilt his company from a folding chair in a studio apartment.

Nathaniel exhaled, the sound of a man setting down a burden. "I'll wire her something. Set her up somewhere nice. She doesn't have family, nowhere really to go. She'll be fine."

He said it the way you'd talk about canceling a subscription. No malice in it. That was the worst part. There wasn't even enough of me in his voice to earn cruelty.

I didn't make a sound. I turned, and I walked out past the hostess, past the golden light, into the cold. I didn't cry in the cab. I just held the champagne box on my lap and stared at my own reflection in the window, ghosted over the passing streetlights.

At the penthouse, I went straight to his side of the bed. I don't know why. My hand knew before my mind caught up. I opened the drawer and there it was — the Cartier watch, gold case, cream face, a hairline scratch on the crystal I'd noticed once, years ago, and told myself not to think about. It was polished now. Moved to the front, like he'd been reaching for it lately. Like he'd been planning to wear it again.

I held it for a long time. It was heavier than it looked.

Then I set it down, exactly where I'd found it, and picked up my phone.

My mother answered on the first ring, even though it was almost dawn in London. "Skyla."

Just my name. Not a question.

"I'm ready to come home," I said.

There was a pause, soft as a held breath. "I'll have the plane ready," she said. Nothing else. She never asked what happened. She never needed to.

Nathaniel came home the next morning with Adelina on his arm, like he was introducing a new hire. She looked at the apartment — my apartment, the curtains I'd sewn the hems on myself — with the mild interest of someone touring a rental.

"Skyla." Nathaniel's voice was brisk, already moving past me to the next item on his list. "This is Adelina. She's going to be around."

Around. Like weather.

He pulled a folded check from his jacket and set it on the counter, smoothing the crease with two fingers like he was closing a deal. "This should cover you for a while. You'll be taken care of."

He didn't ask where I'd go. He didn't ask if I was all right. His eyes were already sliding toward Adelina, toward the door, toward tomorrow's bell.

I looked at the check. Six figures, his handwriting neat and sure.

"I'll make my own arrangements," I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt.

He blinked, like the sentence didn't compute. "Skyla, be reasonable—"

"I am," I said, and left it there.

I walked to the bedroom. I took one bag. I left the framed photos, the recipe books stained with three years of my handwriting, the little ceramic vase I'd thrown in a pottery class during the worst month of the bankruptcy, still sitting crooked on the windowsill where the morning light hit it. I didn't look at any of it twice.

Adelina stood in the doorway as I passed, arms crossed loosely, a small satisfied curve at the corner of her mouth. She didn't say a word. She didn't need to.

I didn't look back at the apartment. I didn't look back at him.

Some doors you close quietly, so no one hears them shut.
