Chapter 2

I stayed in the city three more days. I told myself it was for the paperwork, the last box of my things, the loose threads. Really, I think I just wasn't ready to be nowhere yet.

The photo found me on its own. Adelina's account, tagged, twenty-three likes already. Nathaniel in a navy suit, champagne flute raised, Cartier watch catching the light on his wrist like it had never once lived in a drawer. Behind him, the living room I'd built for us — except the walls were bare now. No framed photo from the courthouse steps. No cookbook spines on the shelf. The little crooked vase, gone from the windowsill. Someone had scrubbed three years off the walls in under a week.

I didn't cry. I just set the phone face-down on the hotel comforter and ordered room service I didn't eat.

Edith called the next morning, her voice bright as a bell. "Skyla, darling, you'll come Thursday. Family dinner. It wouldn't feel right without you there to see us off properly."

See us off. Like I was the one leaving a party, not the one being swept out of a life.

I should have said no. I said yes, because some stubborn, bruised part of me wanted to watch it happen with my own eyes, straight-backed, instead of hearing about it secondhand from a stranger's phone.

The Stewart dining room smelled like roasted lamb and lilies, the same as always. Edith had redone the flowers — white, structured, expensive. Adelina sat where I used to sit, at Nathaniel's right hand, her pale hair loose over one shoulder, her fingers finding his forearm every few minutes like she was checking he was still real.

"Tell them about Milan," Edith said, leaning toward her with the delighted attention of a woman auditioning a new daughter-in-law. "The gallery opening. Wasn't there a prince there?"

"Practically," Adelina laughed, soft and modest, and launched into a story I'd heard a version of before, polished smooth as river glass.

No one asked about the three years before that. No one asked where I'd been the whole time Stewart Industries was drowning, and then, somehow, not.

Richard raised his glass halfway through the second course. "To the man who built it back with his own two hands."

I watched Nathaniel's face when he said it. He didn't flinch. He didn't look for me down the table, because I wasn't down the table anymore, and even in his memory, apparently, I'd never been.

It was Richard, actually, who said my name — a slip, an afterthought. "Whatever happened to the other girl? Sarah, was it?"

"Skyla," Edith corrected lightly, waving one manicured hand like she was clearing smoke. "A sweet girl. Genuinely. But not really suited to this chapter, if we're honest." She smiled at me across the table, including me in the verdict as though I might agree. "You understand, don't you, darling?"

I held my wine glass very still. "I understand completely," I said, and my voice came out so calm it almost surprised me.

After dessert, Edith caught my elbow in the hallway, steering me gently toward the study, her grip warm and sure, the same grip she'd used three years ago to pull me into her kitchen and call me the daughter she never had.

"I want you taken care of," she said, low and confiding. "I found the sweetest little place in Brooklyn. One bedroom, but charming — exposed brick, good light. I've already spoken to the landlord. First six months are covered."

A send-off, dressed up as a gift.

"That's generous," I said.

"It's the least we can do." Her eyes were bright with the particular satisfaction of a woman being gracious at no real cost to herself. "You gave us a lot of good years, Skyla. We won't forget that."

"No," I agreed. "I don't imagine you will."

She took my hesitation for gratitude and patted my hand, already moving on, already rearranging her face for the next room, the next guest, the next version of family she'd assemble out of whoever was useful that season.

I didn't take the apartment. I didn't tell her that either. I just let her believe what was easiest, because there was no version of the truth that would have made a dent in a woman like Edith Stewart — not until the truth had a name attached that she couldn't afford to insult.

That night, back at the hotel, I called my mother again.

"The plane's ready whenever you are," she said, no question in it, the way she always said things she'd already decided to be patient about.

I looked at the small bag by the door — the only thing I'd kept from three years of a life that had apparently never included me.

"I'm ready," I said. "But not for London yet. Not last stop first."

There was a pause on the line, and then, very quietly, my mother said, "Then where."

"Midtown," I said. "I have somewhere to be. Somewhere I should have gone a long time ago."
