His Mistress Broke My Marriage, So I Took His Empire Chapter 1

My husband called to say an emergency conference had come up, so I'd have to go to our son's parent-teacher night alone.

But later I realized that there had never been any emergency.

...

Three hours earlier, I was buried in blueprints.

The Harlow Street renovation was due Friday, and my desk looked like a paper storm had hit it. My phone buzzed. *Damian.*

I tucked it between my ear and shoulder. "Tell me you're on your way. It starts at six."

"Elara." My husband's voice was smooth, the voice he used on investors. Damian Vale ran Vale Meridian Group like a king ran a country. "Something's come up. Tokyo and London want an emergency call. All the partners have to be on it."

My pen stopped moving. "Tonight?"

"Tonight. I'm sorry, babe."

"Noah's been talking about this all week. He made you a name card. With a rocket ship on it."

A pause. Papers rustled on his end. "I'll make it up to him. Saturday. Whatever he wants."

"You said that last month."

"And I meant it last month." His tone cooled by a degree. "This is the job, Elara. The job pays for his school."

I pressed my thumb hard into the edge of the desk. "Fine. Go save the world."

"Love you."

He hung up before I could answer.

...

Noah's classroom smelled like crayons and floor wax. Tiny chairs sat in rows, and nearly every one had two grown-ups crammed beside it.

My son spotted me at the door and lit up. Then his eyes darted past my shoulder, searching.

"Where's Dad?"

I crouched to his level. "He had a big meeting, sweetheart. With people on the other side of the world."

"Oh." He nodded fast, like he'd expected it. "Okay."

He led me to his desk. The rocket-ship name card sat there, DAD written in careful green marker. Noah slid it under his folder before I could say anything.

Across the aisle, a girl was sitting on her father's knee, giggling while he pretended to be stuck in the little chair. Noah watched them. His small fingers twisted the hem of his sweater.

Then he turned to me and grinned. A big one. Too big.

"It's okay, Mom. Dad has to run the whole company. That's really hard. He's tired all the time."

My throat closed.

"You're not sad?" I asked.

"Nope." He patted my hand, like *I* was the one who needed comforting. "You came. That's the important part."

Seven years old, and he was already lying to protect me.

I kissed the top of his head and held it there a second longer.

...

By the time Mrs. Okafor finished her slideshow, Noah had fallen asleep against my arm. Outside, the sky had turned the color of a bruise.

The rain hit like someone had flipped a switch.

Parents scattered toward their cars, jackets over heads. I stood under the narrow overhang at the gate, Noah heavy and warm on my shoulder, water already soaking the back of my coat.

No car. Damian should have taken the driver.

I dialed him.

It rang out.

"Come on," I muttered, bouncing Noah when he stirred. "Just pick up."

Second call. Voicemail. *You've reached Damian Vale—*

I hung up and stared at the screen, rain dripping off my bangs onto the glass. A conference call. Of course he wasn't answering. He was busy.

Still, I tried a third time.

The ringing stopped.

"Damian? Thank God. It's pouring and I'm stuck at the school with—"

A wet, rhythmic sound came through the speaker. Then a groan. Low. Familiar.

My husband's groan.

"Fuck, Brielle."

I froze. Rain hammered the overhang above me, but suddenly I heard nothing else.

*Brielle.* His secretary. Twenty-six. Red lipstick. She'd brought Noah a birthday present in March.

"Look at you," Damian panted. "You're soaking wet for me. You filthy little slut."

A woman moaned, high and breathy.

"This is your fault," he went on, his voice rough in a way I hadn't heard in years. "You know that? You did this. Walking into my office in that skirt. I should be with my wife right now. I should be with my *kid*."

My knees went loose.

"So stop," Brielle whispered. Something creaked—a desk, a couch. "Go home, then. Go be a good husband."

He swore again, harder. The slap of skin answered her.

"Shut up."

"Mm. That's what I thought."

I pressed the phone so tight against my ear it hurt. Some stupid part of me was still waiting for him to stop.

He didn't.

Brielle laughed, breathless and delighted. "Isn't this exactly how you like me, Damian?"

Noah shifted against my neck. "Mom?" he mumbled. "Is that Dad?"

I ended the call.

My hand was shaking so badly the phone nearly slipped. I curled my fingers around it until the edges bit into my palm.

"No, baby," I said. My voice came out perfectly calm. "Wrong number."

"Is Dad coming to get us?"

I looked down at him. Wet curls stuck to his forehead. His father's eyes, half-closed with sleep.

"No," I said. "We're going home by ourselves."

I stepped to the curb and raised my arm. A yellow cab swung through the flooded street and stopped, spraying water across my shoes. I didn't even flinch.

Inside, the driver glanced at me in the mirror. "Rough night, lady?"

I laughed. I actually laughed, short and strange, and the driver's eyebrows shot up.

"Upper West Side," I said. "Eighty-first and Riverside."

Noah fell back asleep with his head in my lap. I stroked his hair with one hand.

The other still held the phone.

Halfway home, the screen lit up.

*Damian calling.*

I watched it ring. Once. Twice. Five times.

Then a text appeared.

*Saw I missed you. Meeting ran long. Did Noah have fun?*

I read it three times.

Then I opened my contacts, scrolled past his name, and found the one number I'd sworn I'd never call again.
