Chapter 4

The bodega on my corner sold three papers.

I saw myself on all three.

The photo was from the cage gala. Wet hair, wet dress, the bars framing my body like I was a specimen someone had bothered to label. My name was under it. My full name. Layne Sullivan. Not a blurred face, not a nickname. Everything.

The man behind the counter looked up when I walked in, then looked down fast. He knew. He'd already read it.

I bought a bottle of water I didn't want and left the papers where they were.

On the subway, a woman across from me lifted her phone and pretended to check a message. I heard the shutter click anyway. I counted the floor tiles. Green. Green. Cracked. Green.

By the time I got to the hospital, my hands were steady again. I'd made them steady on the walk from the station. That was a thing you could do, if you practiced. You could put your hands somewhere else in your head until they stopped shaking.

The security guard at the third-floor desk was new. Or maybe he wasn't new, and I'd just never looked at him.

"I'm here to see Tanner Sullivan. Room 307."

He typed. His eyes moved across the screen. Then his mouth did a small thing, apology and discomfort at the same time.

"Ma'am, you're not on the approved list."

I didn't move.

"I've been on the list for three years," I said. Quiet. Reasonable. The voice I used when a thing was already lost and I was pretending it wasn't.

"There's a note here. Security review. Seven days."

"What security review."

He glanced at the screen again like it might have changed. "It doesn't say."

I stood there. I stood there long enough that the second guard came out from the back and put a hand on the edge of the desk in the way men do when they want you to see it.

"Ma'am."

"Seven days," I repeated.

"Seven days."

I walked to the elevator. I got in. I rode down to the lobby and I walked out into the cold and I stood on the sidewalk for a long time with the bottle of water still in my hand.

Seven days is a long time when someone is breathing through a machine and you are the only person who ever sits by the bed.

I called every morning. A different nurse picked up each time. Vitals stable. No change. Vitals stable. No change. The words started to sound like a song someone was humming to keep me quiet.

On day four, I saw Davina at a charity brunch I hadn't been given permission to skip. She was wearing pale pink. She kissed the air beside my cheek.

"Layne, sweetheart." Her hand rested on my forearm. Warm. Manicured. "I saw those awful photos. I can't imagine. Who would do such a thing."

I looked at her. She looked back at me. Her eyes were very clear.

"I don't know," I said.

"Neither do I." She squeezed my arm. "But we'll find out."

She moved on to a woman in navy. I watched her laugh at something the woman said. Her laugh was small and delighted, like she'd just been given a compliment she'd been waiting for.

I touched the lining of my coat where Tanner's picture was. Just once. Just to be sure it was still there.

On day eight, they let me back in.

Room 307 smelled the same. The machines beeped the same. Tanner's hand under mine was the same temperature it had been for three years.

A nurse I didn't know came in with a clipboard.

"There should be an updated neuro assessment," I said. "His doctor was going to run one last week."

She flipped through the pages. Flipped through them again. Her mouth pulled down at one corner.

"It's not in the chart," she said.

"It was supposed to be run on the third."

"I can see the order. I can't see the result." She flipped once more, slower. "Sometimes pages get misfiled when there's a shift change. I'll ask the night team."

"How long," I said.

"A few days."

A few days. In a life measured in authorization forms and ventilator settings, a few days is a country.

I sat with Tanner until the shift changed. I told him about the bodega, about the photos, about the woman on the subway. I didn't tell him about Davina. I didn't want her name in this room.

I saw Darius that night.

He was in the lobby again, in the same chair by the window. Newspaper. Coffee. He didn't look up when I came out of the elevator, and for a second I thought he might not have seen me.

Then he did look up. And something in his face was different.

I can't explain it any better than that. He was still Darius. Still steady. Still the fence post. But the way he held the coffee cup was too still, like he'd forgotten he was holding it. And his eyes stayed on me a beat longer than they usually did before sliding away.

He didn't nod tonight.

He watched me cross the lobby and go through the revolving door, and when I glanced back through the glass, he was still watching.

On the sidewalk I stopped. Cold air. Cab horns. The city doing its usual thing.

I thought: he knows something.

I didn't know what. I didn't let myself guess. Guessing was another thing that had learned to cost me.

I walked home. I counted the cracks in the pavement. One. Two. Three.

Somewhere in a parking garage across the river, a man was sitting alone in a car with a file open on his lap and his hands very still on the wheel.

I didn't know that yet.

But I would.
