Chapter 5

The call came at 6:42 a.m.

I was awake already. I hadn't slept. I'd been sitting on the edge of my bed with my coat on, staring at the phone, waiting for it to be a reasonable hour to call the hospital.

The nurse's voice was careful. Too careful.

"Miss Sullivan, I need you to come in."

"What happened."

"Please come in."

I hung up. I didn't lock the door behind me. I ran.

***

The subway took forever. Every stop felt like someone had added it just to make me wait. I counted the stations. I counted my breaths. I counted the tiles on the floor until they blurred.

When I got to the third floor, there were three people standing outside Room 307. A doctor I'd never seen before. The nurse who'd called. And a woman in a dark suit with a hospital ID clipped to her pocket.

The doctor stepped forward.

"Miss Sullivan—"

"Where is he."

He looked at the nurse. The nurse looked at the woman in the suit.

"I'm very sorry," the doctor said. "Your brother went into cardiac arrest at approximately 3:17 this morning. We did everything we could, but—"

I walked past him. I walked into the room.

Tanner was still in the bed.

The machines were off. The ventilator tube was gone. His chest wasn't moving.

I stood there.

I stood there for a long time.

Someone behind me said something about paperwork. Someone else said something about a chaplain. I didn't turn around.

I walked to the bed. I put my hand on his.

It was cold.

Not the cool-warm of sleep. Cold. The kind of cold that means gone.

I pressed my forehead to the rail. I didn't cry. I didn't make a sound.

I just stood there with my hand on his until someone touched my shoulder and said they needed me to step outside.

***

They put me in a small room with pale blue walls and a box of tissues on the table. The woman in the suit sat across from me. She had kind eyes. I hated her for it.

"We'll need you to sign some forms," she said. "There's no rush. Take your time."

"What happened."

"Cardiac arrest. It's not uncommon in long-term coma patients. The body just—" She paused. "Sometimes it just stops."

"He was getting better."

She looked down at the folder in front of her. "I don't have any notes about improvement in his chart."

"A nurse told me. Two days ago. She said there were responses. Finger movement. Eyelid movement."

The woman's face didn't change. "I can look into that. But sometimes families see things they want to see. It's very normal."

I looked at her. She looked back at me.

"The Swiss team was coming today," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"A neurological team. From Switzerland. They were supposed to arrive this morning."

She wrote something down. "I'll make sure that's noted. I'm very sorry for your loss, Miss Sullivan."

She slid the folder across the table. I signed where she pointed. I signed everything. I didn't read any of it.

When I walked out of the room, Darius was standing in the hallway.

He didn't say anything. He just looked at me.

I stopped.

"How did you know," I said.

He glanced past me, toward the nurse's station, then back. "I need you to come with me."

"I can't. I have to—" I didn't know what I had to do. My brain was empty.

"Layne." His voice was quiet. Steady. The fence post. "Please."

I followed him.

***

We went to a diner six blocks away. He ordered coffee. I didn't order anything.

He put a folder on the table between us. Plain manila. No label.

"I'm a federal agent," he said. "I've been undercover for two years investigating the Herrera family for financial crimes."

I looked at the folder. I didn't touch it.

"Three months ago, I found something else," he said. "A classified file. It was sealed by court order after a kidnapping case. Paisley Crawford's kidnapping."

I looked up.

"Your brother didn't stand by and do nothing," Darius said. "He walked into that building unarmed. He threw himself in front of her. They beat him so badly that seventy-three of his bones were fractured. He's the reason she's alive."

The diner was loud. Someone dropped a plate in the kitchen. A baby cried two booths over.

I couldn't hear any of it.

"The file was sealed because Tanner was considered a witness," Darius said. "But he never woke up to testify. So it stayed sealed."

I looked at the folder.

"Open it," he said.

I opened it.

There were photos. Hospital photos. A young man's body, broken, bruised, unrecognizable. A police report. A witness statement from Paisley Crawford describing a man with a Brooklyn accent and a scar on his hand who told her to run.

Tanner had a scar on his hand. From when he'd caught a knife I'd dropped when I was twelve.

I closed the folder.

"He died a hero," Darius said quietly.

"He died this morning," I said.

Darius's jaw tightened. He reached into his coat and pulled out a second folder. Thinner.

"I requested an expedited autopsy," he said. "Off the record. A friend in the medical examiner's office."

He didn't open this one. He just looked at me.

"Layne," he said. "Your brother didn't die of cardiac arrest."

I stared at him.

"He was poisoned."

The diner kept being loud. The baby kept crying.

I sat there with two folders on the table in front of me and my brother's body six blocks away getting colder.

And I understood, all at once, that I had spent three years being punished for a lie.

And that the only person who could have told the truth was dead.
