Chapter 196

Chapter 196 – In the Crosshairs

Georgia sat in the dim light of her apartment, reviewing the latest surveillance feeds James had sent her. Multiple locations in the city were marked with red indicators-vehicles moving slowly, unmarked faces scanning buildings, and shadowy figures loitering near familiar addresses.

"They're watching me," she whispered, almost to herself.

Her phone buzzed. A text appeared, chilling in its simplicity:

"We know where you are. Stop looking, or the next message won't be digital."

Georgia's pulse quickened. The warning wasn't signed, but the signature was unmistakable: an operative loyal to Dominic Reyes-or worse, David Luther.

Mara appeared on the secure video feed.

"They're not just targeting you-they're testing your reactions. Every move you make is being observed. And the more you act, the more dangerous it becomes."

Georgia swallowed hard. She wasn't the only one. Across town, Lana was having a similar encounter: a black SUV parked outside her apartment for hours, cameras hidden in the streetlights, a man casually jogging past while watching her window.

"I knew he'd come for me eventually," Lana whispered, gripping her phone. "I just didn't think it would be like this."

James contacted Georgia via encrypted line.

"We need to coordinate. It's no longer just about proving the truth," he said, voice tense.

"It's about staying alive long enough to expose them."

"I know," Georgia replied. "But they're watching everyone I care about-Lana, Mara... even the people helping us. One wrong move, and they won't hesitate."

Mara analyzed the patterns.

"It's coordinated. Not random. Someone has access to their schedules, routines, and even private comms. They know what each of you is doing."

"Then we need to be unpredictable," James said. "We divide attention. We feed false information. And we strike where they least expect it."

Georgia hesitated. The thought of Lana caught in the crossfire made her stomach twist.

"What if we can't protect everyone?" she asked quietly. "What if someone dies before we even get a chance to fight back?"

"Then we make sure their deaths aren't in vain," James said firmly. "We take back control. That's the only way to survive."

Hours later, Georgia returned to her apartment to find it eerily quiet. She moved cautiously, every sense on high alert. The door clicked behind her-and then she froze.

A figure appeared in the shadow of her hallway. Before she could react, the lights went out.

"Georgia," a calm, menacing voice said from the darkness. "Step away from the investigation... or the consequences won't be mine alone."

Simultaneously, Lana's phone buzzed with an anonymous photo: a figure standing just outside her window, holding a weapon, clearly watching her movements.

"They're closing in," Lana whispered, panic rising.

Back in the vault, James and Silas coordinated their response, tracking multiple digital signals converging on Georgia and Lana's locations.

"This is no longer subtle," Silas said. "They're testing reactions-and patience. They want you exposed, isolated, and vulnerable."

Georgia gritted her teeth.

"Then we show them they picked the wrong targets," she said.

The shadows in her apartment shifted. She reached for her phone to alert James-and realized the device was jammed.

"This is it," she whispered. "We're in the crosshairs."

The darkness enveloped Georgia as footsteps drew closer. Outside, Lana's window blurred with movement, the black SUV still idling.

Two women. Two targets. One enemy. And an unknown number of operatives ready to strike.

The first move had been made-and neither Georgia nor Lana knew who would survive the night.
