Chapter 3

CLAIRE'S POV

The countdown on my screen hit zero, and a dispatcher's voice came through the speaker.

"911, what's the address of your emergency?"

I gave it to her without taking my eyes off Brandon. Harbor Ice Center, west service corridor, child injured, adult injured, a man physically blocking the ambulance exit. She told me units were already on the way from the earlier call and asked me to stay on the line.

Behind me, wheels rattled on concrete. The second EMT was pushing an emergency wheelchair down the corridor, a folded blanket on the seat. Lily had climbed up into my arms at some point, and now she rested her cheek on my shoulder, twisting her head so she could see my mouth. Every time I spoke, her eyes dropped to my lips.

Brandon didn't move from the exit.

"Here's how this goes," he said. Nicole raised her phone beside him, the red recording dot glowing in the corner. "You look at the camera, and you tell the truth. Tell the camera you tried to extort me."

"You're obstructing medical care," I said.

"Say it, and I'll step aside."

There was a fine purple dust along the edge of his sneaker. Lavender plastic, ground almost to powder. It must have come off when he ground his heel down on the aid.

I'd seen that same look on his face the day he filed for divorce. He'd stood in our kitchen with his agent on speaker and asked me to pull Lily's audiology records from the team's family health file. *It's for my career, Claire. Insurance flags. Sponsors ask questions.* As if her ears were a scandal he needed to bury.

I'd cried that day. I'd explained the appointments, the bills, the nights she screamed because the world was too loud and too quiet at the same time.

I didn't explain anything now.

I kept the emergency call on speaker and turned the screen so he could see it was still connected.

"Police are on their way," I said. "The dispatcher can hear you. Move."

Nicole stepped in front of him before he could answer.

She flipped the phone toward me and opened the editor again. This time the timeline held a close-up of Lily from the sign-in area, her chin shaking, her hands over her ears, tears sliding down her face. Nicole had slowed it down and laid soft piano music under it.

Her thumb hovered over the blue POST button.

"Here's the deal," she said. "You go on my live and say Brandon never touched her. Never touched the old man. You were emotional, you overreacted, you're sorry."

"No."

"Apologize, or her crying face goes everywhere." She smiled. "ESPN. The Athletic. Every hockey account with a blue check. By tonight, your kid is the poster girl for your little shakedown."

Down the hall, the security guard's radio crackled. "Copy, incident WR-2291, officers entering west service corridor now. Repeat, WR-2291."

At the far end, the double doors swung open. Two police officers came through, followed by a third EMT with a trauma bag. Martin limped in behind them, his splinted wrist strapped to his chest.

"I'm not taking back what happened for anyone," I said.

I walked past Nicole's phone and met the officers halfway. With Lily still on my hip, I pulled the white slip from my pocket and handed it to the taller one.

"That's the security preservation receipt. Camera footage from West Four, Rink Two, and this corridor, saved from ten-thirty on. Evidence bags 0417 and 0418 have my daughter's hearing aids. He pulled them out of her ears and stepped on one."

The officer read the slip, then looked at Brandon. "That true, sir?"

"She's twisting it," Brandon said.

"He shoved me," Martin said flatly, lifting his splint an inch. "In front of thirty people."

The EMT who'd checked Lily nodded. "Abrasion to the child's left outer ear, consistent with forced removal of the device. Possible fracture on the coach's wrist. We need this hallway clear."

The officer took out a small white card, wrote on the back, and handed it to me. "Officer Patel. Your case number's on there. Sir, step away from the exit."

Nicole's thumb was still over the button, but she didn't press it. She locked the screen.

"You think a cop card scares me?" she said.

"I think you should call a lawyer," I said. "My lawyer will speak to yours."

The EMTs pulled the wheelchair into a recessed alcove beside a fire extinguisher cabinet, out of the camera lines, and I finally set Lily down on the blanket.

She looked up at me. Then past me, at Brandon in his navy team jacket with his old number on the chest.

Slowly, she lifted her hands.

*Is he angry because I can't hear him?*

My throat closed. I brushed her hair back and touched the outer edge of her left ear. It was hot and red, the skin scraped raw along the curve where the earmold had been torn out.

I made myself breathe slowly. Then I signed each word carefully, so she couldn't miss a single one.

*You did nothing wrong. I love you.*

She studied my hands like she was memorizing them.

Last spring, she'd practiced one sign over and over in front of my phone. Her fingers spread, thumb tapping her forehead. *Daddy.* She made me record it a dozen times so we could send it to him. She'd checked my phone every morning for weeks.

He never answered. Not once.

Watching her face now, I knew I would never send him another video.

The older EMT knelt beside us. "Any allergies?"

I unzipped the hearing aid case and pulled out the laminated card tucked inside the lid. "Penicillin and adhesive bandages. Her pediatrician's number is on the back."

He took a photo of it. The EMT handed back the folded parental documents I carried to every event, the certificate of adoption on top, tabbed in yellow. I'd given them to him to confirm consent. Now I tucked them inside my coat.

From this point on, Brandon would only reach us through a lawyer.

A soft chime echoed down the corridor.

The private elevator at the end of the hall slid open. Julian Reed stepped out in a tailored charcoal coat, the arena's general manager hurrying beside him, along with a woman in team medical scrubs. A slim leather folder was tucked under Julian's arm.

Brandon saw him and straightened his collar. He pulled a fresh copy of his player sheet from his jacket and moved forward.

"Mr. Reed. Brandon Kessler. I know this looks bad, but there's been a misunderstanding. I'd love five minutes to talk about your blue line—"

Julian walked past the paper without even looking at it.

He crossed to our alcove and dropped to one knee in front of the wheelchair, bringing his eyes level with Lily's. His hands moved easily, without any hesitation.

*Where does it hurt?*

Lily pointed to her left ear.

Julian nodded and held out his hand to the team medic. The EMT handed her his assessment notes, and she passed them to Julian to read.

Then Lily threw her arms open and launched herself at him.

He caught her and pulled her against his chest. Over his shoulder, I saw her face relax for the first time all morning, the look of a kid who'd finally been understood without having to fight for it.

Brandon stopped halfway down the corridor. The player sheet hung loose in his hand.

"What is this?" His voice cracked. "Why is my daughter hugging you?"

Julian stood up with Lily in his arms, one hand spread across her back. The leather folder had slipped from under his arm onto the wheelchair seat, and the top page showed a court seal and two signatures. One of them was mine.

He looked Brandon straight in the eye.

"Because I'm her father. And you're the man who hurt her."
