Chapter 3

Ava's POV

For four months, I worked out of a climate-controlled back room at Aurelius with my mother's ledger open beside every tray.

Adrian's team catalogued the private collection. I matched what they found against her handwriting. I compared stone weights to the hundredth of a carat and checked repair marks and the hidden engraved numbers no dealer ever thought to look for. By October, I'd traced two more Laurent pieces to two different auction houses in two different countries. The divorce was final by then; the civil claims over the forged documents and stolen property remained open.

Then came a valuation trip to Geneva. It rained so hard that the highway disappeared under the wipers, and a delivery truck slid across the median and hit the passenger side of the Aurelius car.

When I woke up, the first thing I touched was a plastic hospital wristband. The second was the rigid bandage holding my face together.

"Don't try to talk yet," a nurse said. "Your jaw's fine. Your cheekbone and collarbone aren't."

Adrian came on the third day. He set the accident report on my tray table without being asked, because he knew I'd want to read it myself. It said wet pavement and a jackknifed truck, and the driver was cited. Nobody had planned it. It was bad luck, and the bad luck had happened to me.

"The company policy covers reconstruction," he said. "The surgeon has options. Some of them are extensive."

The surgeon showed me those options a week later on a tablet: a new nose, a reshaped jaw, a softer chin. "Since we're already in there," she said, like she was offering me an upgrade at a car dealership.

I looked at the screen and saw a stranger who had been designed to be easy to love.

"No," I said through the swelling. "Fix what the accident broke. Leave the rest to me."

She repaired the orbital bone and the fractured cheek and treated the scar along my hairline. My face healed a little differently than before. It was sharper on the left, and there was a faint pale line near my temple. It was still mine.

During the long weeks of recovery, I cut my hair to my jaw and stopped wearing the soft pink lipstick my mother used to buy me. I took her family's name for my professional work, the middle name she'd given me and her maiden name together.

Six months after the accident, Aurelius issued me a new staff badge. HR and compliance retained my legal identity; the badge displayed my professional name. It read: *Evelyn Vale, Private Collections Advisor.*

I held it for a long time. Then I clipped it on.

---

Eighteen months after that, I walked into the Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo with a VIP badge on a black silk lanyard and a list of Aurelius private clients in my tablet.

The haircut and the healed bones weren't what made me unrecognizable. What had changed was where I stood. I was no longer the woman whose inheritance went on the auction block. I was the person who decided how it got presented.

The preview room smelled of lilies and polished brass. I moved down the line of cases until I reached Lot 47 and stopped.

My mother's diamond drop earrings sat on gray suede under a single spotlight.

"Old mine cut, pair, circa 1880," Adrian read from the lot card over my shoulder. "Current holder acquired them through a fund in the Caymans. Clean paperwork, as far as anyone's bothered to look."

"Someone always looks eventually."

I had filed my ledger discrepancies with Aurelius compliance and recused myself from handling these lots. The consignor claimed an innocent purchase; counsel had yet to establish a defect in the current title.

He lowered his voice. "You should know that Moreau's firm is bidding on half this sale. G&C has been chasing top-tier assets all year."

I kept my eyes on the left earring, where the setting had been tightened by a jeweler in Lyon in 1994. That repair was in the ledger on page thirty-one.

"Put Lot 47 on my VIP list," I said.

"Ava."

"Evelyn."

He studied me. "Evelyn. Why?"

"If he wants them again, let him pay retail this time."

Adrian didn't argue. He made a note.

---

Gabriel arrived at the reception just after eight.

He looked like a magazine's idea of success, with a tailored navy suit, a new watch, and the easy laugh of a man nobody had said no to in nearly three years. Celeste had her arm hooked through his. A photographer from a Monaco society page called them "the new power couple of collector finance," and Celeste turned her best side toward the lens.

I stayed by the glass case with a flute of champagne I hadn't touched.

He came over ten minutes later. He was alone, with his bidder paddle tucked under one arm. The number on it was 212.

"Beautiful, aren't they?" he said. "Are you a fan of these too?"

I hadn't heard his voice in nearly three years. My fingertips went cold against the glass.

I set the champagne down on the ledge, carefully, so it wouldn't make a sound.

"They're old mine cut," I said. "Hand-faceted. They're heavy at the base and made for candlelight. They aren't the kind of thing you hand to someone casually."

"You sound like you've owned a pair."

"I sound like I've studied them."

He laughed, then stopped laughing. He looked at my face for a little too long, at the left cheekbone and the pale line at my temple.

"Have we met before?"

"Not in any way that mattered to you."

His brows drew together. He seemed to be searching for a file in his memory, and he couldn't find it.

"Gabriel." Celeste's voice cut between us. She took his arm again and gave me a quick, polite scan, the kind women give a dress they've decided isn't a threat. She didn't recognize me. "The Hartmanns are waiting."

"In a minute."

Her smile tightened. "Who's your friend?"

"I'm with Aurelius," I said, and turned back to the case.

I didn't watch them leave, but I heard her heels on the marble, hard and quick. She was angry with him, not me, because he'd taken longer than a minute to look away.

---

Near the end of the dinner, I stood at the terrace doors with Adrian. Gabriel was six feet behind us, talking to a Swiss banker about yield. I waited for a pause in his sentence.

"The earrings remind me of someone," I said to Adrian, just loud enough. "Someone who never deserved to own them."

Adrian didn't miss a beat. "Then I hope they find a better home this time."

Behind us, Gabriel had stopped talking.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian found me in the corridor outside the private viewing salons. He held up his phone.

"Moreau just asked our client office for a one-on-one meeting with you. He says he's looking for a new private collections advisor and he'd like to start tonight."

"What did you tell him?"

"Nothing. It isn't my call." He forwarded the request to me and put his phone away. "Whatever you choose, it goes through compliance. And Evelyn, be careful."

He walked back toward the ballroom and left me alone with the screen.

*Private consultation request. Client: Gabriel Moreau, G&C Heritage Capital.*

Below that, a note in his own words:

*"I'd like to know what it takes to impress a woman like you."*

I read it twice. Nearly three years ago, he had stood in my study and told me my mother was dead and her things were finally useful. Now he was asking for my time, and he was willing to pay for it.

My thumb hovered for a second over the screen.

I pressed Accept.

The corridor was lined with gilded mirrors. When I looked up, I saw him reflected in all of them at once, standing at the far end by the salon doors with the next day's VIP catalog rolled loosely in one hand. He was waiting for Evelyn.

For the first time, Gabriel Moreau was walking up to my table, and he had no idea who had set it.
