Chapter 2

"Evelyn, what did you just pull from the server?" Julian's voice buzzed against my eardrum, thin and frantic over the control room comms channel. "Evelyn, answer me. The prompter is dead."

I stepped up to the one-way observation glass. He could only see his own reflection from the brightly lit studio floor, but I knew the exact sightline from the anchor desk. I held the red plastic drive flat against the glass.

"Put it back," Julian ordered, his voice dropping an octave. "We are on live television, Evelyn. Do not make a scene."

I tapped the red casing against the thick glass. Once. Twice. The sharp clicks vibrated through my fingertips.

Julian faltered on the monitor. His eyes darted toward the booth. His jaw clamped tight, the muscles jumping under his powdered skin.

I dropped the drive into my leather handbag and let the heavy brass clasp snap shut. The sound echoed in the empty server room, sharp as a gunshot. I pulled the earpiece out, letting it dangle by its coiled wire, and pushed through the heavy steel exit doors.

The hallway smelled of stale coffee and ozone from the hot studio lights. Footsteps slapped the linoleum behind me, fast and heavy.

"Mum, wait."

I turned around. Oliver jogged toward me, his leather satchel bouncing against his hip. He did not look angry. He looked mildly inconvenienced.

His hand slipped into the side pocket of his bag. He pulled out the two gingerbread biscuits I had baked at dawn. He took a bite of one, chewing quickly.

"You didn't have to crash the feed," Oliver said, swallowing. "Dad looked like an idiot up there. He had to pivot to commercial."

"He called me mentally unstable on live television."

"That statement on air?" Oliver waved the half-eaten biscuit dismissively. "It is just a narrative to get us through polling day."

"A narrative." I kept my voice level. My hands did not shake.

"Dad's poll numbers were tanking. You saw the data yourself this morning. The zoning board scandal is killing us. We needed a sympathy angle." He took another bite. A crumb caught on his bottom lip. "Voters love a tragic family sacrifice. The loyal husband standing by his troubled wife. It polls incredibly well with the suburban demographic. We gain at least four points."

"Four points," I repeated. "Is that what my reputation is worth?"

"It is just politics," Oliver insisted. "You are the one who taught me how to spin a bad news cycle."

"I taught you how to highlight policy, Oliver. Not how to diagnose your mother with a mental illness."

He reached into his bag again, fumbling for a napkin. Instead, his fingers caught on a thick stack of index cards. They spilled out of the satchel and scattered across the scuffed floor tiles.

Forty-seven youth town hall Q&A cards. They landed face down.

On the back of every single one, written in my blue ink: *Breathe before your first sentence.*

I had written that note for him before his eighth-grade debate. Before his high school valedictorian speech. Before his first college interview. Even today, I had stayed up until two in the morning drafting his responses for this exact broadcast, making sure he sounded confident. Making sure he sounded smart.

"Did your father write that line for you?" I asked. "Or did you come up with that yourself?"

"Chloe drafted it," Oliver muttered. "We workshopped it in the green room."

"You workshopped my sanity."

"You are part of the campaign team, Mum. You know how this works. We all have to take a hit sometimes. It is for the greater good."

"Do you believe it?" I asked.

He kicked a card aside with the toe of his trainer. It slid under a metal folding chair. "Believe what?"

"That I am crazy. That I am unstable. Do you actually believe the words you just said to a hundred thousand viewers?"

Oliver shifted his weight. He looked at the ceiling panels. He looked at the water cooler down the hall. He looked at the exit sign above my head. He looked everywhere except at my face.

"It doesn't matter what I believe," he said finally. "It matters what the voters believe." He pointed the stub of his biscuit at my handbag. "What is on the red drive? Is there anything in there that is going to ruin Dad?"

My chest hollowed out. A cold, empty space settled where my son used to be.

He did not ask if I was hurt. He did not apologise for his betrayal. He only wanted to protect the campaign. He was eating the food I baked for him while demanding I surrender my only leverage.

"The drive holds the donor lists," I told him. "The unedited tax returns. The opposition research. The offshore accounts. Every risk warning I have compiled and buried for the last three years."

"Give it to me." Oliver held out his hand. The same hand I used to hold when crossing the street. The same hand I bandaged when he fell off his bike.

"No."

"Mum, stop being dramatic. You are going to tank the entire election over a PR stunt."

"A PR stunt." I unclipped the plastic campaign pass from my lapel. The laminated photo showed me smiling, standing a polite half-step behind Julian. The perfect, quiet wife.

I walked over to the glass coffee table next to the studio entrance and tossed the badge down. It landed with a sharp smack.

"Mum, come on. Put the badge back on. We have a press junket in twenty minutes. You need to stand next to Dad and smile for the cameras."

"I am done," I said.

"You can't just walk out!" Oliver raised his voice, a hint of genuine panic finally breaking through his rehearsed calm. "Dad needs that teleprompter data. I need my talking points for the afternoon panel. The reporters are going to ask about the waterfront zoning."

"Write them yourself."

"I don't know the policy details for the waterfront project! You have the only copy of the briefing!"

"Then you better start reading the municipal code."

"Mum, please." He took a step forward, his tone shifting from demanding to pleading. "Just give me the drive. We can fix this after the election. We can issue a retraction. Say your medication was adjusted."

"My medication." I let out a short, dry laugh. "For the next eleven days, I will not patch another leak or cover another mistake for any Ashcroft." I picked up my handbag and adjusted the strap on my shoulder. "You are on your own."

"You are bluffing," Oliver said, crossing his arms. "You would never let Dad lose. You built this campaign."

"Watch me."

The electronic lock on the reception room door buzzed loudly, cutting off his reply.

Chloe pushed her way inside, swiping her master keycard back into her pocket. She still wore my navy blue cashmere coat. As she stepped into the small room, the unmistakable scent of Julian's cedarwood cologne drifted off the wool collar, thick and cloying.

"Oliver, they need you back on set right now," Chloe started, her voice brisk and authoritative. "The interviewer is improvising and Julian is stalling. We need to pivot back to the family narrative."

She turned her head and saw me standing by the glass table. The smug, victorious smile she had worn on set vanished.

Her gaze dropped.

My handbag hung open on my arm. The red plastic drive lay on top of my wallet, glowing under the harsh fluorescent lights.

Chloe froze, her hand still gripping the metal door handle.
