Chapter 3

"Hand over the drive, Evelyn." Chloe gripped the metal door handle, blocking my exit from the reception room. Her eyes were fixed on the red plastic casing resting in my open handbag.

"Move out of my way," I said.

"Not until you give me the drive," Chloe insisted, stepping fully into the room and letting the door shut behind her. "Julian is drowning out there. The interviewer is asking about the zoning board, and he doesn't have the data."

"That is his problem."

"You are jeopardizing the entire campaign over a misunderstanding," Chloe said, crossing her arms.

"A misunderstanding." I stepped toward her, stopping just out of arm's reach. "Take off the coat."

Chloe stiffened, her fingers tightening on the leather portfolio under her arm. "Excuse me?"

"Fourteen months ago, during a torrential storm, I interviewed you in my living room," I said, keeping my tone flat. "I hired you. I wrapped that exact navy cashmere around your shivering shoulders so you wouldn't freeze on your walk to the Underground."

Chloe lifted her chin. She tried to project authority, standing tall in my clothes. "Julian told me to keep it. He said it looked better on me anyway."

"I am sure he did." I reached out, ignoring her flinch, and plunged my hand into the right side pocket of the coat.

"Hey, back off!" Chloe snapped, trying to swat my arm away.

My fingers brushed cold, hard metal. I pulled my hand out, revealing the tarnished brass St. Jude's badge.

Chloe blinked at the object, clearly not recognising it. To her, it was just junk left in a pocket.

I did not look at her face anymore. My gaze dropped to the left cuff of the sleeve. A sticky, bright orange smear stained the expensive wool.

"Orange marmalade," I noted, pointing at the dried crust on the fabric. "Julian's favourite breakfast. He always drops a spoonful when he reads the morning paper."

Chloe yanked her arm back, hiding the cuff behind her hip. She opened her mouth to speak, but I turned my back on her and walked straight to Oliver.

He stood by the spilled index cards, watching the exchange with a tight jaw. His leather satchel hung awkwardly from his shoulder. He looked like a cornered animal, desperate to find an exit that did not exist.

I grabbed his right hand, turned his palm up, and pressed the heavy brass badge into his skin.

"Look at it," I commanded.

Oliver stared down. His fingers curled slightly around the tarnished edges. "My St. Jude's pin. I lost this in the fifth grade."

"You lost it under your bed," I told him. "I just pulled it out of her pocket."

Oliver looked up, his eyes darting between me and Chloe. The pieces were clicking together in his mind, but his political training fought against the truth.

"They were not just meeting in hotel rooms, Oliver," I said, my voice dropping. "She was inside our house. She was inside your childhood bedroom."

Oliver swallowed hard. He looked at the badge again, tracing the engraved letters with his thumb. For a second, the polished political mask slipped, revealing the confused young boy underneath. Then, his jaw clenched, and the walls rose again.

"An old coat doesn't prove anything," Oliver said. He shoved the brass badge into his jeans pocket, as if hiding it would erase the facts. "Dad said she borrowed it from the hall cupboard during a staff meeting last week."

"A staff meeting in your bedroom?"

"You are twisting the facts to fit your narrative," Oliver argued, taking a step back. "You always do this. You overreact."

"I am overreacting?" I asked.

"Stop trying to ruin him," Oliver snapped, his voice echoing off the acoustic panels. "Dad paid for my entire London internship. He funded my flat in Mayfair. He has given us everything, and you are throwing a tantrum over an affair that might not even be real."

He thanked the wrong person.

I opened my wallet. Behind my driving licence, folded into a tight square, sat a faded yellow slip of paper. I had carried it every single day for two years. A silent reminder of what I gave up for his future.

I pulled it out, unfolded the creases, and slapped it onto the glass coffee table next to my discarded campaign badge.

"Read it," I said.

Oliver crossed his arms, refusing to look down. "I do not have time for your games. We have a press junket."

"Read the paper, Oliver."

He leaned over. His eyes scanned the printed ink.

"Eighteen thousand, six hundred pounds," I read aloud for him. "Issued two years ago. The exact amount of your London rent and internship fees."

"Dad wired me that money," he argued, though his voice wavered. He pointed at the receipt. "This is just a piece of paper."

"Your father's accounts were frozen during the first campaign audit," I corrected. "I took my mother's heirloom sapphire brooch to a pawn shop on 4th Street. I traded the only thing I had left of her so you wouldn't lose your spot at the firm."

Oliver stared at the yellow receipt. The colour drained from his lips, leaving them a pale, sickly grey. His hands dropped to his sides, the leather strap of his satchel slipping off his shoulder and hitting the floor with a dull thud.

"Dad said..." Oliver started, his voice cracking. He swallowed dryly. "He said he sold his vintage Rolex to cover the fees."

"He is wearing the Rolex on live television right now," I replied. "Check the monitors if you don't believe me."

Oliver turned his head toward the studio glass. Julian was still sitting at the anchor desk, running his hands through his hair in frustration. The heavy gold watch gleamed under the studio lights.

Silence stretched between us. The heavy studio doors blocked out the chaos of the broadcast floor, trapping us in this suffocating room. I watched my son process the lie. I waited for the apology. I waited for him to kick Chloe out, to hand me back the index cards, to finally stand by my side.

Chloe stepped forward, her flat shoes soundless on the linoleum. She pulled a sleek silver tablet from her leather portfolio and shoved it into Oliver's chest.

"The press junket starts in twelve minutes," Chloe said, her tone sharp and professional, ignoring the tension in the room. "We are losing the narrative. The interviewer is destroying Julian out there. I drafted the medical disclosure to buy us time."

Oliver took the tablet. His pale fingers gripped the metal edges tightly. He did not look at Chloe, but he did not hand the tablet back either.

"Oliver, do not do this," I warned.

He did not look at me. He looked at the glowing screen.

I stepped closer, close enough to read the bold black text at the top of the document.

The Dangerous Loss of Control of a Candidate's Wife.

The subtitle detailed a fabricated history of paranoia, emotional outbursts, and a supposed refusal to take prescribed medication. It was a complete character assassination, drafted to excuse Julian's infidelity and paint me as a hysterical burden.

"This is a lie," I said, pointing at the screen. "You know it is a lie."

"If you support that statement," I told him, keeping my voice steady, "you will never get me back."

"We need the sympathy votes," Chloe urged, stepping beside him. She tapped the edge of the tablet. "Your father is waiting for the confirmation. The PR team has the release queued up. We send this out, and the media focuses on her health instead of the teleprompter glitch."

Oliver stared at the yellow pawn receipt sitting on the glass table. The proof of my sacrifice lay beside the campaign badge I had worn for years. Then, he looked down at the tablet screen.

"It is just politics, Mum," Oliver whispered, his voice devoid of emotion.

A bright blue button pulsed at the bottom of the document, waiting for authorisation.

Approve and Publish.

Oliver raised his right hand, and his thumb hovered over the glowing screen.
