Chapter 2

Alpha Alex said he’d be gone on a business trip.

“Just a couple of days,” he murmured, planting a kiss on my forehead the way a husband who owned the calendar of my life might. His wolf-scent clung to the sheets after he left, oak and smoke with a darker tang under it, the smell of iron and chains that made the hair along my spine lift.

“I’ll miss you,” he lied in a Valentine’s whisper. I smiled and let the lie sit between us, Luna's lips, practiced and soft. The instant his car swallowed the drive, the mask slid off my face. The wolf under my ribs rolled, restless and hot, claws scraping at bone. It wanted blood or at least the scent of it.

I had been hunting him for days. Not like a jealous wife, like a predator watches the herd, patient, patient until a mistake. I tracked his routines the way the pack scouts mark a rival’s trails. Every locked office door, every late-night call that smelled of bourbon and someone else’s perfume, every careless smirk he thought I missed. He’d forgotten I was Luna, born with senses keener than most, with a nose that sang when deceit walked into the room.

Finding the safe behind the painting was almost anticlimactic. Of course, the code was Ashley’s birthday. Of course. The lock turned with a soft, final click, and my wolf answered with a low, animal rumble in my chest.

The safe was a nest of betrayal. Hospital records, signatures in Alpha Alex’s jagged hand that tied my mother to decisions made without us, an organ transfer authorization like a butcher’s receipt. Her heart parceled out to Ashley’s sister as if bloodline were a commodity. Wolves keep lineage like breath; he’d severed it like a rope. The rage that rose was old and righteous. It tasted of iron on my tongue.

Beside the papers lay the money trail, payments wired to Tobias Moonfang, my ex-mate, vacations booked in my name and stamped “business,” gifts wrapped in receipts, and Ashley’s perfume. I pressed my face into the leather floor; the scents hit me—cologne, perfume, guilt, and my wolf sniffed them like proof of a kill. I let human tears burn for a single, furious heartbeat, then wiped them away. Grief hardened into something ancient and hungry.

I photographed everything. Each shutter was a claw, small, precise, taking a sample of his empire to show the pack. At the bottom of the box, a folder titled “Future Assets” lay fanned: deeds, policies, investments meant to crown Ashley at my expense. I snapped those too, slow and methodical.

When I closed the safe, my hands didn’t tremble. The wolf’s calm settled over me like nightfall. I moved through the pack house with the predatory grace of a creature who knows the lay of the land, scent-posting the truth in my mind so no one could deny it later.

I left without a backward glance. Wolves don’t retreat from the scent of an enemy; they mark it, plan around it, and then they strike in numbers and timing. My wolf didn’t want to turn her back, but I had a strategy that needed patience and a lawyer’s signature.

The lawyer’s office was next.

“Luna Sofia?” His voice wavered when I appeared unannounced, the way voices do when a predator enters a room.

“I need a divorce agreement, a bond severance,” I said. Calm. Cold. The way a powerful Luna would speak.

He stammered about Alpha Alex, about wolf rights. I cut him off. “He doesn’t know. Send it after I’m gone.”

“Gone?” His confusion was almost amusing. He didn’t need to know what “gone” meant to a wolf who had decided to shed her skin.

The building I sought reeked of damp, smoke, and secrecy. The underground agency wasn’t on any human map, but wolves whispered about it. A place where identities could die, and new ones could rise.

I pushed through the door.

The man behind the counter barely looked up from the shadows of his hood. But his nostrils flared. He smelled me. He knew I wasn’t fully human.

“You lost?” he asked, his voice a rumble that carried more than curiosity.

“No.” My voice carried steel, the authority of a wolf who had bled enough to stop bowing. “I need your services.”

His eyes narrowed. “Disappear?”

“Completely.”

He studied me for a long moment, then smirked. “And what makes you think I can help someone like you?”

I reached into my bag and dropped a thick stack of cash. His smirk widened, but his eyes never left mine. He could feel it, the wolf pacing just beneath my skin, waiting for the moon to rise.

He led me into the back room, where monitors buzzed with false lives and reborn names. “We fake deaths,” he explained. “A car crash, drowning, or suicide. Clean. Believable.”

I didn’t flinch. “Make it a suicide. No loose ends.”

He handed me a clipboard. “Fill this out. We’ll handle the rest.”

I took the pen but looked at him straight in the eye. “Do what you need to do for the humans. But understand this-” I let my wolf rise in my gaze, silver bleeding into my irises, the growl in my throat barely contained.

“I won’t be gone.”

The man froze. He had seen wolves before, but rarely one who smiled while promising death.

“I’ll let the world believe I’m dead,” I continued. “But I will hunt. And when the moon calls, I will make him bleed for every secret he buried in that safe.”

The wolf inside me howled, low and hungry.

Alpha Alex Thornclaw thought he had destroyed me.

But he had only woken something far older.

The kind of woman who doesn’t just survive.

The kind of wolf who avenges.
