Chapter 3

The headline hit me like a thrown rock, hard enough that my wolf snarled under my skin.

“Alpha Alex Thornclaw and Ashley Bane spotted at exclusive auction-sparks still flying after all these years.”

My thumb trembled over the screen. The world narrowed until it was nothing but their faces, perfectly lit, perfectly posed, radiating warmth that should have belonged to me, his Luna. Ashley’s hand grazed his arm with the ease of a mate’s caress. Alex’s eyes lingered on her as though the bond we’d forged meant nothing. Even through pixels, I could almost scent the perfume, the champagne, the treachery.

He’d told me he was away on pack business. The headline said otherwise. The photograph said otherwise. My wolf surged forward, its teeth bared, reading betrayal the way she reads tracks in snow.

I pressed my palm over my stomach. Beneath it, a heartbeat thrummed, small, stubborn, perfect. My pup. My legacy. The betrayal tasted sharper because of that. Rage pressed hot against my ribs, but I swallowed it down. For my child, I would be still water. For my wolf, I would be a storm biding its time.

The clinic smelled of rubbing alcohol, lemon, and faint wolf musk clinging to the doctor’s coat. The ultrasound screen hummed like sacred machinery, the flicker of life burning bright. My chest softened despite myself. Hope, when born in shadow, is not fragile. It is fanged. It is fire.

Leaving the hospital, the city reflected lies back at me in every pane of glass. Thornclaw Enterprises loomed above the skyline like a pale fang. Once, that tower had been a temple where I thought we’d built our future. Now it stank of secrets scrubbed clean and polished lies.

The resignation letter crumpled in my palm, a promise written in ink but sealed in blood. The lobby buzzed with mortal sounds, the receptionist’s smile, the ring of a distant phone, but beneath it, I felt the current of something raw, the way a wolf senses a storm before thunder cracks.

When I asked if the Alpha was in, the receptionist’s eyes flicked away, guilty.

“He has an important visitor,” she said.

My wolf already knew who.

I did not leave.

The corridor smelled of recycled air, expensive coffee, and the faint iron tang of dominance that never stopped clinging to Alpha Alex. My wolf stirred uneasily at the scent, pacing in the hollow of my ribs, hackles raised though no sound left my throat. I moved without thinking, guided by the instinct that had always dragged me toward the places that mattered most.

The door to his office stood ajar, a sliver of a world I was no longer welcome in. I hesitated for the briefest breath, the wolf urging me forward with a low growl no human ear could hear. And then, I looked.

They were there. Alpha Alex, his hand fitted like a brand against Ashley’s waist, her body tilted toward him as if she owned the sun and every orbit it commanded. Then they kissed. Not a clumsy spark, but something practiced, deliberate. The way his mouth softened around hers felt like rust eating through bone. My wolf’s rage struck sharp and hot, demanding I tear them apart, but I forced the beast to heel.

There is a place inside every wolf where calm and fury coexist, a thin, trembling edge between surrender and slaughter. I balanced there, breathing with terrible precision. My hand rose steady, phone lifted. I captured the exact moment Ashley smiled into his mouth. A clean photograph. A clean blade.

With one shutter click, I carved a new life for myself. A dummy account. A message to Tobias. The picture that would begin to unravel Alpha Alex Thornclaw, strand by strand.

Back home, smoke curled thick from the fireplace, the room heavy with the musk of burned wood and memory. I fed photographs to the flames, fed the tokens he’d once pressed into my palm, notes that had said love in a handwriting now trained in duplicity, every gift he gave me. They blackened, curled, and vanished, their faces melting into ash that smeared against my skin like war paint. My wolf approved.

Then Ashley stepped from nowhere, too light, too sure of herself, her perfume cutting through the wolf-smoke. She kicked the boxes, sending sparks upward in a spray of fire. Embers feathered the air, dancing like restless spirits.

She smiled, a predator’s grin hidden behind human sweetness. “Oops. Sorry, I just slipped. Are these photos? Of you and Alex? Burning them?” Her voice dripped with poison. “Did you finally realize how useless you are to him?”

The wolf prowled close to the surface now, claws scratching at my skin, but I kept my face smooth, my voice even. “What did you say?”

Her eyes gleamed. “You know how your mother died so helplessly—”

The words gutted me. Five years vanished in a breath: hospital corridors soaked in bleach, the sterile lie of we did all we could, papers shoved at me while my mother’s breath was pulled from the world like thread unraveling from cloth.

The wolf inside me howled.

The slap came before thought, before reason, an instinctive arc written into my bones. My palm cracked against her cheek with a sound that echoed like a gunshot in the small room. The wolf inside me rejoiced at contact, at the proof that flesh could be broken when words were not enough.

Ashley stumbled, her heels scraping, and then she fell into the circle of fire. Flames licked at her dress, hungry and eager, perfume twisting into the acrid stench of scorched fabric. For a dizzy heartbeat, the world narrowed to firelight and the widening of her eyes, a geometry of shock and heat and violence.
