Chapter 4

Lyra’s lips tugged faintly, though there was no warmth in it—only exhaustion carved too deep to hide.

“I understand,” she said at last.

For a heartbeat, Kael’s expression shifted.

Coldness—brief, sharp, like frost cracking over still water.

Then it was gone.

So quickly that Lyra almost doubted she had seen it at all.

He adjusted his posture, composure returning like a mask settling back into place.

“Since you understand,” Kael said evenly, “then do not repeat it.”

Lyra’s fingers curled at her side.

“What do you mean by that?”

The air between them tightened.

Kael’s gaze cooled again, this time without hesitation.

“You truly wish me to speak plainly?” he asked. “You know Bella is Virella’s close companion. Yet you still chose to speak of Morwen as a mistress and act as though you are not directing your hostility toward Virella.”

The words struck like a thrown stone.

Lyra swallowed the rising heat in her chest.

“So what?” she said, voice low. “She was the one who spoke ill of Mother first.”

For a moment, she thought—foolishly—that he might understand.

That something in him would still recognize the name Selene as sacred.

But Kael only exhaled softly, disappointment settling into his gaze like a familiar burden.

“Ronan was right,” he said. “You have been indulged too much.”

Lyra went still.

The words did not feel real at first.

As if they belonged to someone else’s life, spoken in a voice that only resembled his.

Even knowing Ronan had chosen Virella’s side, she had never thought—never truly believed—that Kael would stand there and echo it.

Her throat tightened.

“Bella said Father abandoned Mother because she was not enough,” Lyra said slowly. “Do you not feel anger when you hear such words?”

Kael looked at her then.

Really looked.

As though weighing something long broken and deciding it was no longer worth repairing.

At last he spoke.

“Virella was only an infant then,” he said calmly. “What could she possibly understand of any of it?”

A pause.

Then, softer—almost like reason dressed as mercy:

“Her birth was not a choice she made. There is no need to lay blame upon her for what came before.”

Something inside Lyra cracked—not loudly, but cleanly.

As though a thread she had been holding onto for years finally snapped under its own weight.

Her mind drifted, unbidden, back through memory.

Back to that night.

The accusation.

The dragging hands of guards under the old oath banners.

Her father’s voice, furious enough to shake the hall.

“You dare harm your own sister?”

She had not.

She had sworn it beneath the Moonstone altar until her voice broke.

But no one listened.

Not the elders.

Not the guards.

Not even the blood ties that should have bound them.

And Kael—

Kael had stood before her then too.

Seventeen years old. Tall for his age already, but still with the softness of someone who had not yet learned how to turn love into judgment.

She remembered his hand gripping hers tightly, as though afraid she would disappear.

And his voice—hoarse, torn between duty and something that still sounded like care:

“Lyra… whatever has happened, I will stand by you.”

A pause.

“But you must still accept the consequences.”

At the time, she had believed he meant it gently.

That he still believed her.

That he would return for her once the truth was seen.

Instead, that was the beginning of the end.

The private prison had followed soon after.

And no one had come to stop it.

Now, standing in the same world but not the same life, Lyra looked at him again.

He stood before her exactly as he once had—upright, composed, familiar in every line of his face.

Yet something essential had shifted.

Like a wolf that still wore the scent of pack—but no longer answered the call.

Kael’s voice came again, steady, final.

“Lyra. I will always stand by you as your brother.” A faint pause. “But I do not want incidents like this repeated again.”

Discipline.

Correction.

Distance disguised as duty.

Lyra felt something bitter rise in her throat.

So even now, it was not belief.

Not understanding.

Only obligation.

Only position.

Only blood.

Her gaze drifted over him slowly, as though seeing him for the first time.

Not as the brother who used to braid ribbons into her hair beneath moonlit windows.

Not as the boy who once refused to sleep unless she was safe.

But as the man who now spoke of her as something to manage.

Something to correct.

Something already decided.

Her voice came out quieter than she intended.

“You feel… unfamiliar,” she said.

Kael did not answer immediately.

And in that silence, something unspoken settled between them.

Not anger.

Not apology.

Only distance.

Lyra lowered her eyes slightly, breath steadying through effort alone.

A memory surfaced again—her mother’s funeral pyre, smoke curling into a pale sky, her small hands shaking as she cried until her throat hurt.

And Kael, only seventeen then, kneeling beside her in the ashes.

He had held her hand so tightly it hurt.

“I am here,” he had said. “Even without Mother… you still have me.”

His voice had broken on the last word.

“I will protect you. I will never let anyone hurt you.”

Back then, she had believed him completely.

Because there had been nothing in him yet that asked to be doubted.

Now, standing beneath the weight of old vows and newer betrayals, Lyra understood something she did not want to name too clearly.

The promise had not been broken in a single moment.

It had been worn down slowly.

Like stone beneath years of tide.

And though Kael still stood beside her in body—

his heart had already begun to walk elsewhere.
