Chapter 2

It was her father’s birthday.

The Silvermoon Pack had gathered under ancient oaks draped with white banners, the air heavy with the scent of wine, roasted game, and ritual incense burned for the Moonstone blessing. Tonight was not merely celebration—it was oath and display, where bloodlines were measured in silence and pride.

Halfway through the ride to the ancestral hall, Lyra spoke softly from the corner of the carriage.

“I should offer him a gift. Stop for a moment. I can—”

Ronan did not even turn his head.

“There is no time,” he said, voice clipped like drawn steel. “A gift is not what matters tonight.”

The carriage continued forward.

No further discussion was allowed.

When they arrived, Ronan stepped down first, his presence immediately drawing respect from the pack guards stationed at the carved stone gates. He did not wait for her. He only told her, through a passing glance, to enter ahead while he went to see to the horses.

And just like that, she was alone beneath the vast archway engraved with lunar runes worn by centuries of devotion.

Lyra stepped inside.

The great hall of the Moonfall ancestral house opened before her like a remembered dream—long pillars of pale stone, moon-silver chandeliers, and soft harp music drifting through the air like breath over water. Wolves of noble rank stood in clusters, their voices low, their gazes sharp.

Then silence shifted.

Not the sacred kind.

The watching kind.

Bella appeared with a sweep of perfumed skirts and a circle of followers behind her. She did not approach—she descended, like one approaching something beneath her station.

Her gaze landed on Lyra and sharpened with open contempt.

“Well,” Bella said, tilting her head, “so the exile returns.”

A few soft laughs followed.

Her eyes dragged over Lyra’s plain traveling cloak, unadorned by jewels or house sigils. Bella wrinkled her nose slightly, as if even her scent was offensive.

“You didn’t even bring an offering fit for the Moon altar,” she continued. “How embarrassing. Not even a silver chain. Has the Moonfall name fallen so far?”

More laughter rose behind her.

A woman beside her leaned in, whispering just loudly enough to be heard. “She still calls herself eldest daughter. Pathetic.”

Bella smiled faintly, but it was not warmth—it was blade-edge satisfaction.

“And to think,” she added, voice softening into cruelty, “you are the daughter of Selene.”

At that name, something in the hall shifted.

Selene Moonfall.

A name once spoken with reverence under every full moon gathering. A woman blessed by beauty and voice alike, whose songs were once offered in Moonstone rites across the capital packs.

Lyra’s mother.

Bella’s smile deepened.

“The capital adored her,” she said. “And yet her daughter… is like this. Perhaps talent does not survive disgrace.”

Her gaze flicked up and down Lyra slowly.

“No wonder your father strayed,” Bella murmured. “Even wolves abandon what brings them shame.”

The words struck deeper than any blade.

Lyra did not answer at first.

Her wolf stirred beneath her ribs—quiet, restrained, but not absent.

Selene Moonfall had once been the heart of their household. When Lyra was small, her mother’s voice had filled the old halls like warm light during winter moons. It was Selene who had sung her to sleep beneath carved wooden beams blessed by elders.

And it was Selene who had died beneath shattered wheel and broken road when Lyra was sixteen.

A carriage accident, they had said.

A cruel twist of fate.

After that night, the house had never felt warm again.

Her father had changed first in silence, then in anger. Grief turned sharp. Love turned brittle. And somewhere between mourning and accusation, Lyra became something easier to blame than fate.

She remembered a night long after the funeral rites, when accusations had already begun to spread through whispered tongues.

“Why are you doing this?” she had asked him once, voice trembling. “Can you still face Mother’s spirit?”

Her father had looked at her then—not as daughter, but as burden.

“If I truly owed your mother,” he said coldly, “I should have ended you at birth. If not for you, she would still live.”

That sentence had never left her.

Not in sleep.

Not in silence.

Not even in prayer beneath the Moonstone shrine.

Now, standing in the hall where her mother’s memory was once honored, Lyra felt that old pain rise again—quiet, heavy, and familiar.

Bella stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough for it to cut sharper.

“You should kneel when Selene’s name is spoken,” she said. “Not stand here pretending you belong.”

Something inside Lyra snapped—not loudly, but cleanly, like ice giving way beneath pressure.

Her hand moved before thought could stop it.

The sound echoed through the hall.

A single, sharp slap.

Bella staggered back, stunned. A hand flew to her cheek as disbelief flooded her face.

For a heartbeat, the entire hall froze.

Lyra’s voice came out steady, but edged with something dangerous beneath it.

“Do not speak of my mother again.”

Her gaze lifted, cold and unwavering.

“And do not forget your place. I may not stand within the inner circle of this house, but I still hold a seat in the council of this pack. You will not address me like some stray.”

Bella’s eyes flared red with humiliation.

“You—” Her voice shook with rage. “You dare strike me? My father will see you punished for this!”

Lyra did not flinch.

A faint, almost weary curve touched her lips—something that did not belong to joy.

“Then I will wait,” she said quietly.

Before anything else could be said, a new voice drifted through the hall.

Soft.

Measured.

Familiar in a way that made the air turn heavy.

“Lyra… what are you doing here?”

The sound of it made something in her chest lock.

She turned.

And in that single movement, the world seemed to fall away.

Because standing there, beneath the carved moon sigil of the Moonfall lineage, was the one person she least expected to see so soon—

and the one person whose gaze no longer felt like home.
