Chapter 10

Theron truly believed her words. There was nothing in Lyra’s tone that suggested rebellion or intent, only the quiet resignation he had come to associate with exhaustion. So he dismissed it in the way a father dismisses the last flicker of a child’s defiance—without concern, without weight. He turned, already preparing to leave, as though the matter had been settled by his judgment alone.

But Lyra called after him.

He paused at the threshold.

She stood by the tall floor-to-ceiling window, sunlight spilling across her like pale gold poured over stone. It should have made her look softer, younger, as it once did when Selene still lived and laughter still belonged to their halls. Instead, it only made her stillness more pronounced.

Her voice came gently, almost too gently.

“Father,” she said, and for the first time there was no warmth in the word, “this will be the last time I call you that.”

Theron turned back.

For a brief moment—so fleeting it might have been imagined—something in her profile overlapped with the memory of Selene. The same quiet defiance. The same sorrow held too long without release.

His expression softened before he could stop it.

Then reality settled back over him like a cloak.

He studied her as one might study a distant omen.

“You will marry Ronan soon,” he said at last, his tone returning to authority softened by habit. “After that, keep yourself steady. Whatever mistakes you make, there will be no one left to correct them for you.”

Lyra lowered her gaze.

A faint curve touched her lips—not quite a smile, not quite bitterness. Something in between, something that no longer needed to be explained.

“I understand,” she said.

And Theron, satisfied in the way men are when they believe they have been understood, finally left.

On the fifth day, the packlands were alive with preparation.

The entire household moved in anticipation of Virella’s coming celebration. The Moonstone banners were raised. Offerings were prepared. Guests of standing arrived from neighboring territories, each bringing gifts and greetings for the chosen daughter who would be revealed under the blessing of the ancestral rites.

Lyra did not join them.

Instead, she spent the remaining gold she had gathered carefully, deliberately, as though each coin were a decision that closed one door and opened another.

She had every trace of Ronan and Virella’s affair collected—whispers spoken in hidden corridors, sworn testimonies from servants bound by old oaths, even recorded confessions taken under the truth-binding rites of the Silver Circle.

She did not hide them.

She released them.

Through couriers.

Through inked scrolls sent across territories.

Through public postings in the great squares where messages were pinned for all to see.

And when that was not enough, she ensured the truth was carved into larger displays set upon traveling boards and market stones, where even those who did not read could not avoid hearing the whispers.

The affair between Ronan Bloodclaw and Virella Moonfall was no longer a secret kept within noble walls.

It was becoming a tale spoken in every gathering place.

At the same time, Lyra uncovered the deeper thread.

Virella had not only taken what did not belong to her—she had orchestrated the accusations that had torn Lyra’s name apart, shaping every lie that led to her imprisonment. Each strand of it, once scattered and uncertain, now formed a pattern too clear to deny.

By the time the truth fully surfaced, the celebration would already be underway on the private island Theron had prepared.

A place where Virella would be presented before the gathered clans as kin of the Moonfall line.

A recognition ceremony wrapped in festivity and deception.

Lyra was no longer present to witness it.

She had already taken passage beyond the sea.

**

On the island, Ronan searched for her the moment he arrived.

He moved through the halls, through the gathering spaces, through every place he knew she would have once stood. But Lyra was not there.

Eventually, he found Kael.

“What of Lyra?” Ronan asked sharply. “She was not seen among the arrivals.”

Kael’s expression barely shifted.

“She did not come,” he said flatly. “She claims she is unwell.”

Ronan’s brows drew together.

“Lyra is unwell?”

Kael exhaled through his nose, impatience flickering in his eyes. “It is likely an excuse. She has always been prone to withdrawing when things do not favor her.”

Ronan’s expression darkened slightly.

“And you are not concerned?”

Kael glanced at him, almost amused by the question.

“She is sensitive,” he said dismissively. “This is not the first time she has reacted poorly to Virella’s presence.”

A pause.

Then Kael added, “But why are you suddenly so concerned? Today is Virella’s celebration. Do not bring unnecessary disturbance into it.”

That was when Ronan’s patience snapped.

“Kael,” he said quietly, each word controlled with effort, “Lyra is your sister.”

Kael froze.

The air between them shifted.

Ronan stepped closer, voice tightening.

“She has been different for days. Withdrawn. Silent. And now she is gone from the house entirely. You did not think to question that?”

Kael did not answer.

Not immediately.

For once, something in his expression faltered, as though the certainty he had been leaning on had cracked just slightly beneath pressure.

Ronan did not wait.

He pulled out his phone and tried Lyra’s number again.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Something cold began to coil in his chest.

By the time the message arrived from his aide, that unease had already turned into something heavier.

“Milord,” the message read, “the matter concerning you and Miss Virella has surfaced across the human trade routes and border networks. It is spreading quickly.”

Ronan went still.

When he opened it, the world seemed to tilt.

Images.

Whispers.

Accounts.

All of it laid bare.

His breath caught sharply as he realized what had been released.

Without hesitation, he sent word through his household runners.

“Suppress it,” he ordered. “Erase every trace. This must not reach Lyra.”

His voice tightened as he spoke, as though forcing control over something slipping free from his grip.

“If we move quickly, she will not see it.”

But even as he spoke it, he already felt the lie in it.

Moments later, the runner returned pale-faced.

“Milord… it spreads too fast. It cannot be contained.”

Silence followed.

Then Ronan’s restraint broke.

His phone struck the stone floor, the sound sharp enough to echo through the chamber like a snapped oath.

“Useless,” he said under his breath.

He tried again.

And again.

Calling upon every bond, every favor, every old pact he could invoke.

But the result did not change.

And then he sent Lyra a message.

Only one.

‘Everything you see is false. I have no bond with her. Believe me.’

He waited.

Seconds stretched.

Then the response came.

Or rather—

it did not.

A cold line appeared beneath the message.

Failure.

Unsent.

Blocked.

Ronan stared at it for a long time.

And for the first time since everything began to unravel, he felt something close to fear settle quietly in his chest.

Not of Virella.

Not of exposure.

But of Lyra—

and the silence she had finally chosen.
