He Let His Mistress Raise My Son Novel Cover

He Let His Mistress Raise My Son

I gave up my career so Jace could chase his dream, raising our son alone while he became the face of the league. Then Olivia came back—his high school first love, now a child psychologist. She helped Noah sleep. Jace gave her the garage code, our son's preschool account, my seat at parent events. When Noah was hospitalized, I walked in to find her beside his bed, and the doctor called her "Mom." Jace stopped me before I could answer. She isn't his mother. Maybe, he said, that's not the part that matters anymore. A young adult romance novel of sacrifice, betrayal, and a mother fighting for her place.

Chapter 4

Noah's fever broke a little after four in the morning. By nine, he was on the living room rug with Rex and a bowl of dry cereal, pale under the eyes but asking for cartoons.

I put a yellow legal pad on the kitchen counter.

Date. Time. Medication. Dose. Given by. Witness initials.

Jace stopped when he saw it.

"What's this?"

"Dr. Shaw said not to rely on the shared portal until the disputed entry is checked. Every dose goes on paper."

"You want signatures in our kitchen?"

"Yes."

"Maya, we're not running a hospital ward."

"Our son's record contains medication I cannot account for. Until we know why, we document."

He stared at me, then picked up the pen.

His initials cut so hard into the paper they nearly tore it.

Olivia was at the breakfast bar with a mug of coffee she had made herself. She had stayed in the guest room for the overnight observation because Jace had told her to stay after I told her to leave.

"Paper backup is smart," she said. "I can enter it into the portal at the end of each day so the records match."

"No."

She blinked. "It would save you time."

"You don't touch this chart."

Jace exhaled through his nose.

"Would it kill you to let someone help without treating it like an ambush?"

"She doesn't touch it. That's the line."

"Everything is a line with you now."

I capped the pen.

"Lines are useful when people keep crossing them."

At three that afternoon, I gave Noah the next scheduled dose and wrote it down before I put the syringe in the sink.

Jace was at the facility. Olivia had left for what she called a quick errand.

For two hours, it was just Noah and me.

At five-forty he woke from a nap wobbly and nauseated.

"Mommy, tummy."

He made it to the coffee table before he threw up.

His forehead was cool, but his eyelids looked heavy. I cleaned him up, carried him to the kitchen, and gave him small sips of water.

Jace walked in ten minutes later.

"When was his last dose?"

"Three. It's on the paper."

He pulled out his phone.

"The portal says four-fifty."

My stomach went cold.

"Show me."

On the screen were two entries. Three o'clock. Four-fifty. The display field under the second one read Given by: Maya Bennett.

"I did not give that."

"Your name is on it."

"My name is a selectable field. That is not the same as my account creating the entry."

"You were alone with him."

"And the paper chart is right there. That is why I made it."

I grabbed the yellow pad.

Three o'clock. My handwriting. My signature. Nothing after it.

"Somebody entered a second dose into the system."

The front door opened.

Olivia came in carrying a grocery bag and stopped when she saw Noah against my shoulder.

"Is he okay?"

"He threw up," Jace said. "And the portal shows two doses ninety minutes apart."

Olivia set the bag down carefully.

"Oh no."

"Don't," I said.

She looked at Jace, not me.

"I was going to bring this up tonight anyway. I've been keeping professional observation notes. I think you should see them."

She pulled a slim manila folder from her tote and opened it on the counter.

Family Care Risk Notes - Bennett Household.

Her name and LCSW credential sat at the bottom.

"I'm not accusing Maya of intentionally doing anything," Olivia said. "I want to be clear. But I've documented sleep deprivation, elevated anxiety, resistance to support, and escalating conflict around caregiving. Medication errors happen in stressed households. They happen to good parents."

Jace picked up the folder.

"Put that down," I said.

He kept reading.

"Jace. I gave him one dose at three. I wrote it down the second I did it. Dr. Shaw already requested the access records. Wait for the data."

"Then why does the portal say you gave another one?"

"I don't know yet. That is the point of an audit."

"You were the only adult here."

"For part of the afternoon. My laptop was upstairs. Olivia had access to the family systems. You gave it to her."

Olivia's eyes widened just enough.

"Are you accusing me of altering a medication record?"

"I'm saying the record is wrong and I want to know who made it wrong."

Jace read another page.

Then another.

"I'm calling Hale."

Martin Hale was his attorney, the man the team used whenever football fame spilled into private life.

"For what?"

"A temporary safety plan until the records come back."

"You're taking her notes over the hospital's actual review."

"I'm being careful."

"You're being told who to be careful of."

He was already walking away with the folder in his hand.

Forty minutes later, he returned with instructions written on his phone.

"I'll handle medications. You don't give him anything unless I'm here or we have a third adult present. And sleep in the guest room tonight."

"No."

"Maya, one night. Until we sort this out."

"You are not removing me from my own bedroom because your ex wrote a report about me."

"I'm trying to lower conflict around Noah."

He held out his palm.

"I need the medicine cabinet key."

I looked at his hand.

The same hand that had held mine through two moves, a miscarriage, and the night we brought Noah home.

I took the key ring from the pantry hook and placed it in his palm.

"Say the full sentence," I told him. "Until the review comes back, you think I might have hurt our son."

His face tightened.

"I'm protecting Noah."

"From me."

He did not answer.

The next morning, Dana Brooks called me at 7:14.

She had handled our estate planning years ago. Now she was my attorney.

"Maya, Jace's counsel filed an emergency temporary custody motion overnight. They're asking for primary physical custody pending a parenting evaluation."

I gripped the warm edge of the dryer.

"On what grounds?"

"Medication irregularity. Olivia's signed assessment. The portal entry displaying your name. They attached everything."

"The hospital audit isn't back."

"I know. Bring me the paper chart, every screenshot, Dr. Shaw's preservation request, and the preschool history. Today."

"I'll be there by ten."

When I stepped out of the laundry room, Jace was by the front door with his gym bag.

"Once the review clears you," he said, "we get back to normal."

"Normal."

"You know what I mean."

"Do I? Is normal you and me raising Noah, or Olivia making the decisions I used to make?"

The doorbell rang.

Through the glass I saw a process server holding a manila envelope stamped with a court seal.

Jace's hand froze on the knob.

I walked past him and opened the door myself.
