He Let His Mistress Raise My Son Novel Cover

He Let His Mistress Raise My Son

I gave up my career so Jace could chase his dream, raising our son alone while he became the face of the league. Then Olivia came back—his high school first love, now a child psychologist. She helped Noah sleep. Jace gave her the garage code, our son's preschool account, my seat at parent events. When Noah was hospitalized, I walked in to find her beside his bed, and the doctor called her "Mom." Jace stopped me before I could answer. She isn't his mother. Maybe, he said, that's not the part that matters anymore. A young adult romance novel of sacrifice, betrayal, and a mother fighting for her place.

Chapter 5

The family courtroom was smaller than I expected. Gray carpet. Fluorescent lights. A judge's bench that looked almost ordinary until somebody else's future was discussed in front of it.

I sat beside Dana in a navy blazer that still smelled faintly of the garment bag.

Across the aisle, Jace wore the charcoal suit I had chosen for his contract extension two years ago. Olivia sat behind his attorney with a cream cardigan and a folder on her lap.

Martin Hale stood.

"Mr. Bennett, what have you observed over the last two weeks?"

Jace did not look at me.

"I'm not saying Maya is a bad mother. She's a good mother. That's why this is hard. I'm saying she's overwhelmed. The season is starting. Ms. Marsh has flagged escalating anxiety around Noah, and now we have two medication doses logged ninety minutes apart under Maya's name on a day our son became sick again."

"Do you believe a stress-related dosing error is possible?"

Jace swallowed.

"I think it needs to be ruled out."

Dana rose.

"Your Honor, the disputed digital entry is precisely that: disputed. My client created a contemporaneous paper medication log on the treating physician's advice. It records only the scheduled dose. Dr. Erica Shaw has already requested preservation of the original access data. We ask the court not to impose restrictions before the technical record is produced."

Judge Ortega, a woman with short gray hair and reading glasses low on her nose, reviewed the exhibits.

"I'm not making a final finding about either parent today. I am making a temporary safety decision. Noah remains in the family home. Until the digital record is reviewed, Ms. Bennett's parenting time will be supervised by an approved neutral third party. We reconvene within seven days, sooner if the technical report is available."

Seven days.

I kept my face still.

I had not lost my son.

I repeated that until the words stopped sounding like a lie.

I had not lost him.

Dana leaned close enough that only I could hear her. "This order is temporary, Maya. Do not improvise around it. Follow every condition exactly, document every transfer, and let the audit do the work."

I nodded because she was right. Rage would not get Noah back into my arms unsupervised. A clean record would.

I had lost the right to pour his cereal without another adult watching.

In the corridor, Noah sat with Jace's mother on a wooden bench, kicking his sneakers against the baseboard.

He saw me first.

"Mommy."

He ran hard enough to knock me back against the wall.

"We go home now."

I crouched and wrapped both arms around him.

"Baby, listen. Mommy is staying somewhere else for a few days. It's a grown-up problem. You did nothing wrong."

"I want you come."

"I know. I will see you tomorrow. I promise."

Olivia came around the corner carrying Noah's blue coat.

"Noah, sweetheart. Arms."

He turned because she had been dressing him for days now and automatically lifted both hands.

She slid the coat on and zipped it under his chin.

The movement hurt more than anything said in the courtroom.

My son's body recognized her routine.

Jace crouched beside me.

"Whatever you're feeling, let's keep this clean for Noah. He doesn't need chaos."

"Clean."

"You know what I mean."

I stood.

"I do."

The house was still partly mine on the deed, and the temporary order did not bar me from entering to collect my things.

Jace followed me inside as if he expected me to break something.

My handwriting was still on the kitchen whiteboard. Away game Sunday. PT Friday, 7:00. Noah swim, Saturday.

Six glass containers of chicken, rice, and roasted squash sat in the refrigerator because I had meal-prepped Jace's facility lunches before the hearing that made me unsafe in the kitchen.

In the master closet, my dresses hung between his suits and travel gear.

I stood with an empty duffel in my hand.

"This is temporary," Jace said from the doorway. "When the review clears, you come back. Tonight, even, if it moves fast."

"If."

"When."

"You said if first."

I started taking shirts from hangers.

"Look around, Jace. My handwriting is on the wall. My food is in the fridge. My whole life is organized around making yours work. And an hour ago you told a judge it was possible I mishandled medication for our son because Olivia wrote it in a folder."

"I said I wanted it ruled out."

"Same harm. Better wording."

He stepped closer.

"You're going to look back and understand I was scared."

"Maybe. But fear doesn't decide what I tolerate next."

I put the shirts on the shelf and slid off my wedding band.

His eyes dropped to my hand.

"Maya."

"Dana filed my divorce petition this morning."

His face went completely still.

"You filed?"

"Yes."

I set the ring beside his cufflink tray.

"I'm not leaving to punish you. I'm leaving because I'm done proving my right to be a wife and mother inside my own house."

He did not touch the ring.

Neither did I.

The short-term apartment on Ninth Avenue had a rented couch, a rented lamp, and one window facing another building.

I put Noah's preschool photo on the nightstand.

An email had been waiting since noon.

Little Movers Family Wellness Center - Offer of Employment.

Family Nutrition and Parent-Child Program Coordinator. Start date flexible.

I read it twice and typed yes.

Not to out-credential Olivia.

To put my own name back on something nobody else could edit.

At 9:47, the court-appointed supervisor texted the schedule for tomorrow: ten a.m., neutral family-services center, one hour with Noah.

Three minutes later Jace texted.

Don't use the divorce to punish us.

I typed once, deleted it, and tried again.

Divorce isn't punishment. It's me stepping out of the trial.

I sent it.

Then Dana's client portal chimed.

Petition served. Counsel for Jace Bennett acknowledged receipt, 8:03 PM.

I closed the laptop.

Tomorrow, after my supervised hour with Noah, I would put a copy of those papers into Jace's hand myself.
