Chapter 1

Mandatory team-building, sorry babe.

I read Ben's text twice beneath the glowing marquee of the downtown cinema.

For twelve years, we had attended every major science-fiction premiere together. The tradition began freshman year, when we skipped a dorm party to watch a midnight screening of The Odyssey's first film. We always bought caramel popcorn, arrived forty-five minutes early, and argued over the center seats until the lights dimmed.

Tonight was the final film in the series. Ben had carried the date in his calendar for six months.

The last month had been full of small exclusions I kept explaining away. Ben stopped asking me to join after-work drinks because Sasha found large groups overwhelming. He changed the password on his phone after she began sending voice notes at all hours. Twice, he canceled wedding appointments because she needed help settling back into the city. Each incident looked harmless alone. Together, they formed a pattern I had been too loyal to name.

That afternoon, he even reminded me not to forget the silver scarf I wore to every premiere. Then, thirty minutes before we were supposed to meet, the team-building excuse arrived. I came anyway because I had already collected the tickets and because some stubborn part of me believed he might appear at the last moment with an apology.

I looked across the crowded lobby.

He stood at the candy counter in the blue suit he claimed he was wearing to a corporate dinner. No coworkers surrounded him. No lanyard hung from his neck. He pointed at the largest bucket of caramel popcorn while the cashier reached for a scoop.

I called him.

Across the room, Ben checked his phone and answered.

"Hey, Liv. Bad time."

"Why?"

"The vice president is giving a speech. We're at the steakhouse on Fifth."

I watched him hand the cashier a twenty-dollar bill.

"Are you eating?"

"Just ordering drinks. Long night."

"I thought Henderson was in London."

A pause. "He flew back early."

The lie came smoothly, supported by details he expected me never to verify.

"I hate missing the premiere," he continued. "Twelve years, right?"

"Twelve years."

"I'll buy tickets tomorrow. Same seats, same popcorn."

"Tomorrow."

"I have to go before my boss notices. Don't wait up."

"I won't."

He ended the call.

A woman stepped beside him.

Sasha Miller had returned from Paris a month earlier after a five-year absence. She and Ben had been childhood friends, a fact both of them used to excuse an intimacy that made everyone else feel like an intruder. She hugged him from behind, linked arms in restaurants, and called at midnight because of the time difference she kept forgetting no longer existed.

Each time I objected, Ben smiled and said, "Sasha is practically family."

Now he handed her my popcorn order.

She tasted a piece, laughed, and held one to his mouth. He accepted it.

I moved behind a display advertising collectible cups. From there, I could watch without being seen.

Ben took two tickets from his pocket. Row C, center section—the seats we had chosen together the day sales opened. He had not simply run into Sasha. He had reassigned my place.

They walked toward Theater 6. Sasha caught his hand as the crowd thickened. Ben did not pull away.

I followed at a distance.

At the auditorium entrance, an usher scanned their tickets.

"Enjoy the premiere," he said.

Sasha leaned into Ben's shoulder. "I cannot believe you remembered caramel."

"It is tradition," he replied.

The word struck harder than the lie about the steakhouse.

Tradition was not popcorn. It was the private shorthand of a shared life: the way Ben always bought the first round while I found the seats, the ridiculous toast we made before every opening credit, the running joke about aliens with poor project management.

He was not merely attending a movie with another woman. He was handing her a role built from twelve years of us.

I stepped out from behind the display.

Ben did not see me. His attention stayed on Sasha as she whispered something in his ear. He laughed—the open, unguarded laugh I had not heard at home in months.

My phone buzzed with another message from him.

Henderson is dragging this out. I may be very late. Love you.

I saved a screenshot, then opened our shared wedding-planning folder. The venue contract, bakery appointment, florist, photographer, and hotel block all carried my signature. Our wedding was eight weeks away.

For months, Ben had complained that I was too focused on logistics. He said Sasha understood how to be spontaneous. Yet he depended on me to manage every deposit, deadline, and detail while he took our memories somewhere more exciting.

Inside Theater 6, the lights began to dim.

I could have walked in and confronted them beneath a hundred phone cameras. I could have demanded my seat and watched Ben turn the scene into proof that I was jealous.

Instead, I went to the customer-service desk and canceled my ticket.

"Are you sure?" the clerk asked. "The screening is sold out."

"I am sure."

The clerk processed the refund while the opening score vibrated through the wall. A year earlier, Ben had proposed after another premiere, kneeling beneath the same marquee with a ring hidden inside an empty popcorn box. Dozens of strangers cheered. I had believed the location proved he understood me better than anyone. Now I saw how easily he reused symbols once they stopped serving the version of himself he wanted to display.

The refund returned to my card. I folded the voided stub and placed it in my coat pocket.

Then I opened the wedding folder again and made a list of every contract I could cancel before Ben came home.

The theater doors closed behind them, sealing away the opening scene we had once planned to share. I did not follow.

He had given Sasha our first tradition.

I was going to make certain he never reached the ceremony where he promised me the rest.
