Chapter 2

Two hours before the credits rolled, I shoved my key into the front door of our apartment.

The voided movie ticket crumpled in my fist. I tossed the useless piece of glossy paper straight into the stainless-steel trash can in the entryway. It hit the bottom with a hollow tap.

I dragged my two massive navy-blue suitcases from the hall closet. The zippers screamed as I yanked them open on the bedroom rug. I walked straight to the wardrobe and started pulling down wooden hangers.

My gray wool coats. My linen dresses.

Sasha had returned from Paris exactly one month ago. That was the exact week Ben’s late-night strategy sessions began. The exact week his boss supposedly started demanding mandatory dinners. Tonight’s excuse was a carbon copy of the lie he fed me last Tuesday.

I threw a stack of folded jeans into the first suitcase.

Four hours later, the front door clicked open.

"You wouldn't believe the night I just had," Ben called out from the hallway.

His heavy footsteps thumped against the hardwood. The sharp, sugary scent of burnt caramel popcorn flooded the living room, cutting through the faint smell of my vanilla reed diffuser.

"Absolute torture," he continued, rounding the corner into the bedroom. He tugged at his blue silk tie, loosening the knot with a heavy sigh. "Henderson talked for forty-five minutes about Q3 projections. And the steak? Like chewing on an old leather boot. I'm exhausted, Liv."

He stopped dead in the doorway.

His fingers froze on the silk fabric of his tie. His eyes darted from the two bulging suitcases on the floor to the bare left side of the closet. The wooden hangers swung empty, clattering against each other.

"What is this?" he asked, his voice dropping a full octave.

"I'm packing," I replied, snapping the latch on my jewelry box.

"I can see that." He forced a small, strained laugh, stepping into the room. "Are we going somewhere? Did I forget an anniversary? Tell me you didn't book a surprise trip, because my schedule is completely booked this week."

"No surprise trips," I said. I grabbed my makeup bag from the vanity and dropped it into the front pocket of the second suitcase. "Just leaving."

Ben dropped his hands to his sides. The forced amusement vanished from his face. "Liv, stop joking. It's midnight. I'm tired."

"How was the steakhouse?" I asked.

"I just told you. It was terrible."

"Right. And the VP?"

"Henderson? He's a nightmare." Ben shifted his weight, crossing his arms over his chest. "Why are we talking about my boss right now? Put the bags away."

"You smell like caramel," I noted.

He stiffened. His jaw tightened, a hard line forming along his cheek. "They had desserts. Some kind of caramel tart."

"A tart."

"Yes, Liv. A tart." His tone sharpened, laced with sudden defensive anger. "Are you interrogating me? I work a twelve-hour day, sit through a mandatory dinner to secure my promotion, and come home to my fiancé packing her bags over a dessert?"

I zipped the second suitcase. The metal teeth locked together with a loud rasp.

"I saw you, Ben."

He blinked. "Saw me what?"

"At the theater. I was standing by the ticket podium."

The color drained from his face, leaving his skin a pale, ashen gray. He uncrossed his arms, his posture instantly shrinking. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating, until he let out a long, heavy exhale.

"Okay," he said, holding up both hands in a gesture of surrender. "Okay, look. I didn't want to tell you because I knew you would overreact. You always do."

"I overreact," I repeated flatly.

"Yes. You've been so paranoid lately." He took a step toward me, his voice softening into that practiced, reasonable tone he always used to win arguments. "I was on my way to the steakhouse. I ran into Sasha on Fifth Avenue. She was crying, Liv. She just went through a horrible breakup in Paris. She was completely falling apart on the sidewalk."

I stared at him, letting him dig the hole deeper.

"I had the extra ticket in my pocket," he continued, stepping closer. "I was already feeling guilty about missing our tradition. It seemed like a waste to just throw it away. I bought her some popcorn to calm her down, and we watched the movie. That's it. I didn't tell you because I knew you'd jump to insane conclusions."

"So the VP wasn't at the steakhouse."

"No. I skipped the dinner to help a friend in crisis. Is that a crime?"

"You told me on the phone you were at the restaurant. You said Henderson was giving a speech."

"I panicked!" Ben ran a hand through his hair, messing up the styled front. "You were asking all these questions, and I didn't want to start a fight while I was trying to console her. I lied to protect your feelings."

"To protect my feelings."

"Yes." He closed the distance between us. "Liv, we've been together for twelve years. Are you really going to throw all that away over a movie? Over Sasha?"

He reached out, his hand extending toward my shoulder.

On the oak nightstand beside the bed, his phone lit up.

The bright screen cut through the dim lighting of the bedroom. A banner notification flashed across the locked display. We both looked down at the exact same time.

*Sasha Miller.*

The text preview displayed in stark, black letters.

*Thank you for the perfect date arrangement tonight.*

Ben’s hand froze in mid-air, inches from my collarbone.

The silence returned, stripped of every practiced excuse. The glowing screen illuminated his pale, terrified expression. He stared at the message, his mouth slightly open, unable to form a single word.

I looked at his suspended hand, then up to his eyes.

I picked up the handle of my suitcase and held his gaze until he finally looked away.

"How many of our firsts are you going to re-enact for someone else?" I asked.
