Chapter 5

The leather seat of the Maybach felt softer than the bed I had shared with Sean.

As the car pulled away, I removed the faded denim jacket he had bought me from a clearance rack three years ago. He had called it a reward for cleaning the apartment after his mother’s visit.

I folded it once and left it on the seat.

“Donate it,” I told Winston.

He glanced at me in the mirror. “Of course.”

The gates of the Hayes estate opened before we reached them. Beyond the stone walls, white gravel curved toward the house where I had grown up. Staff lined the front steps, but my mother stood alone at the top.

Margaret Hayes had not changed. Her silver-blond hair was swept into a precise knot. Her navy suit fit like armor. She looked at the suitcase in my hand, then at my face.

Behind her, portraits of six generations of Hayes executives lined the foyer. My own portrait had been removed from the board wing after I resigned, but the empty hook remained. I had spent years pretending I did not care. Seeing it now felt like a challenge.

“I would say I told you so,” she said, “but you look tired enough.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The answer was so immediate that I laughed despite myself.

For one second, her expression softened. Then she pulled me into a brief, fierce embrace.

“Come inside,” she said. “We have five years to repair and three hours before dinner.”

Before the styling team arrived, my mother led me into my father’s old study. My resignation letter still sat in the top drawer of his desk.

“You never filed it,” I said.

“I filed a leave of absence,” she corrected. “The trust document you signed was ceremonial. Your voting shares remained protected.”

“You lied to Sean.”

“I allowed him to believe what he wanted. There is a difference.” She placed a folder in front of me. “The board votes on permanent control next month. Return now, and you have the shares to win. Return as Sterling’s wife, and no one will dare challenge the transition.”

“So this dinner is business.”

“Everything is business until it becomes personal.”

Her styling team took over the west dressing room. They replaced my worn jeans with an emerald silk gown and fastened a diamond collar around my throat. I barely recognized the woman in the mirror.

Not because of the jewels.

Because my shoulders were straight again.

On the dressing table lay the portfolio I had packed. My mother had already opened it. She turned through the sketches in silence, pausing over the wedding gown Josie had stolen.

“The Whitmore judges called me after you withdrew,” she said. “They offered you a place in their London studio.”

“Sean said it was a courtesy offer.”

“Sean knew that if you left for six weeks, you might remember who you were.” She closed the portfolio. “Hayes Couture still needs a creative director. The position is yours when you are ready.”

The offer struck deeper than the diamonds. It was not charity. It was the future I had abandoned, waiting without judgment.

“I’ll earn it,” I said.

My mother’s mouth curved. “That is the answer I expected.”

Winston entered carrying a tablet. “There is a pending charge on your supplementary account.”

I took the device.

Eight thousand five hundred dollars at a luxury boutique. Sean’s name appeared beneath the authorization request.

“He’s trying to buy Josie a handbag,” Winston said. “The store manager called after the card declined twice.”

“Freeze every card attached to him.”

Winston tapped the screen. “Done.”

“Cancel the apartment access at noon. Repossess the van. End the medical payment authorizations.”

“Some services will require written notice.”

“Send it today.”

The tablet vibrated with messages.

Where are you?

Why is the card declining?

Fix this before Josie is embarrassed.

You are ruining my day.

Come home, apologize, and make dinner. I will forgive you.

I typed one response.

The apartment was never yours. Collect your belongings from storage.

Then I blocked the number.

At eight, the private elevator carried me to the top floor of the Zenith restaurant. The entire dining room had been cleared. City lights rotated beyond the glass walls, turning Manhattan into a ring of gold.

A man stood at the windows with his hands in his pockets.

Broad shoulders filled a charcoal suit. He did not turn when I approached.

“You cleared the restaurant,” I said.

“I dislike interruptions.”

“My mother said this was dinner, not a hostage negotiation.”

“That depends on how difficult you intend to be.”

I stopped ten feet away. “You always speak to women this way?”

“Only the ones who keep me waiting five years.”

The words brought back a burst of memory: smoke, broken glass, a white shirt stained red, and a man’s hand reaching through a crushed car window.

Then it was gone.

“I don’t remember meeting you,” I said.

“You were unconscious for most of it.”

He turned.

Alexander Sterling was taller than his photographs suggested. His face was all hard lines, dark eyes, and controlled impatience. A pale scar disappeared beneath the collar of his shirt.

Recognition flickered in his expression when he looked at me, followed by something colder.

“You look better than the last time I saw you,” he said.

“When was that?”

“After the crash.”

My fingers tightened around my clutch. “Sean pulled me out of the car.”

Alexander’s mouth curved without humor. “Did he?”

Before I could demand an answer, he placed a leather binder on the table.

“What is that?”

“A marriage agreement.”

I stared at him.

“You need the Sterling name to secure your position before the Hayes board votes next month,” he said. “I need a spouse to satisfy a governance clause tied to the harbor acquisition. One year. Separate finances. Public unity. Private freedom.”

“I ended an engagement this morning.”

“I know.”

“You investigated me.”

“I investigated the man who stole five years from you.” His gaze sharpened. “And I know exactly how he did it.”

The room seemed to narrow around us.

Alexander opened the binder to the signature page and placed a gold pen beside it.

“Sign,” he said, “and tomorrow I will give you proof that Sean’s paralysis was never the worst lie he told you.”
