Chapter 2

KAYLA:

Informing Elder Jacobs that I had accepted his offer felt like an impulsive decision.

Elder Jacobs was one of the prominent elders at the Silver Moon pack, which was the pack I originated from. Accepting the job offer from him was me killing two birds with one stone.

Two weeks ago, Elder Jacobs threw this job opening to me stating he needed my influence in the pack as a Luna. As tempting as it was then, I didn't have the mind to accept the offer. One, because Vance wouldn't like it — He never wanted me to work asides from doing my duties as the Luna of the Green Woods pack. Two, the job happened to be at my former pack which was far away from here.

Now, I had a reason to actually accept the offer and go back to where I came from. It was the perfect plan.

I was soon to believe I made the right decision while I went to the kitchen to get something to drink.

"I can't believe Alpha Vance will do that to the Luna."

I halted in my steps at the sound of that. That was coming from the kitchen and it sounded like one of the maids.

"Me neither," another maid responded. "The Luna has been nothing but faithful to him but he decided to cheat on her with that his secretary."

"Did you see the way the alpha picked up his secretary like she was his mate or something? I can't lie that made me feel bad for the luna..."

My phone dropped from my hand, causing a thud and I gasped. I should have been more careful.

I didn't want the maids to know it was me so I swiftly picked up my phone and walked off back in the direction of my room. It would be really awkward if they knew it was me listening in on them.

There was no need to actually contemplate whether or not I needed to go for the job anymore. My mind was made up now and I was going to follow through with it.

I was packing my things into my bag when Vance came into the room. He looked so tired when he walked in like he had a really long day.

On a good day, I would have gone up to him to collect his briefcase but for the first time, I didn't. Instead I continued with what I was doing while I managed to mutter a "welcome" to him.

"What are you doing?" was the first question he asked as he settled down inside the room.

"I'm rearranging my wears," I responded. Of course, it was a lie. But I was not planning to tell him that I was leaving.

"Why?"

"I'm trying to take out the ones I'm not using anymore. They look like a lot."

I was this close to telling him that I lost our baby but I kept mute at the last second. He doesn't deserve to know what happened to our baby not with what happened today.

I already informed the pack doctor not to disseminate any information to him, stating that I would do so myself. But I wasn't going to. Never.

He left the room shortly after to go freshen up in the bathroom. And it didn't take too long before I finished up with my stuff. This was more than enough to get me on board out of here.

My phone buzzed and I checked it to see that my mother was calling. I picked up the call to hear her ask: "When are you coming home?"

I informed her already that I was planning to head back to the pack which was what prompted that question from her.

"Not yet, mom. I don't know when but soon enough I'll be home. I'll see you soon, I promise," I told her, trying to be as quiet as possible. But I guess that did not work.

"Who are you seeing?" Vance was standing at the entrance of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist while he stared at me with confusion.

"I'll call you back," I told my mother and hung up the call before facing him, "My friend, Lydia. There's this new restaurant in town that she wants us to check out together."

I said that hoping he would believe me. I mean, it was too hard to believe because I really had no business visiting a restaurant alone. However, that was the only thing I could concoct at that point.

"Okay," he said with a shrug and left me to my thing while he went to get dressed.

I sighed in relief, thanking the moon goddess for not letting him see through my lie. I sucked at it a lot which was why I always tried as much as possible to avoid any situation that led to me having to lie my way out of.

Before I went to sleep that night, I sent a text to my mother telling her that I would call her the next day. I didn't fail to notice Vance looking for his usual calming tea that I always left at his bedside every night but didn't do this time around.
