Chapter 3

My steps slowed as I neared the estate’s private lounge.

Low voices slipped through the heavy wooden doors, blurred but still clear enough to make me stop. Instinct took over before thought could catch up. I moved quietly into the shadows beside the wall, careful not to be seen.

A man inside let out a dry laugh. “Imagine being pushed into a marriage for business. If Damian were still here, Sebastian never would’ve gotten away with it.”

Another voice followed, quieter but no less cruel. “Damian Vaughn would never have let his little sister end up like this. It’s sad, honestly.”

My whole body went still.

They were talking about Damian.

My brother.

A beat of silence passed, then someone lowered their voice even more.

“There are rumors he never died at all. Some people swear he made it out alive.”

For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

The floor seemed to shift under me.

Alive?

After all these years?

My hand pressed harder against the wall as I fought to stay steady.

Inside, the conversation went on, careless and unguarded, as if they had no idea every word was tearing something open inside me.

“Only Sebastian and a few of the older people around the family know what really happened to the Vaughns that night. She’s been kept in the dark from the beginning.”

A snicker followed. “Poor thing. She was just a kid when it happened. Easy to shape. Easy to make believe whatever story they gave her. No wonder she clings to affection like it’s the only thing keeping her alive.”

Nausea rolled through me.

The night my family died.

That was how the papers had described it years ago. A tragedy. A violent attack. A fire no one could fully explain. But the truth had never been printed. My parents. My brother. Everything I had belonged to, nearly wiped out in one night of smoke, flames, and betrayal.

I only remembered pieces of it. Screams. Heat. The smell of smoke and blood. Hands dragging me away while the world burned behind me.

I had always been told Damian died protecting me.

That he gave up his life so I could keep mine.

But what if that had never been true?

Then came Colette’s voice, smooth and sharp enough to cut.

“She’s pathetic, really. Still looking at Sebastian like he ever cared.”

That hurt more than I wanted it to.

My fingers trembled, but I refused to stay hidden another second. Drawing in a slow breath, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The room went silent.

Every voice stopped.

Every face turned toward me.

Sebastian, seated near the center of the room, straightened at once. His arm had been resting along the back of Colette’s chair. The moment he saw me, he dropped it.

Colette didn’t move.

She just lifted her eyes to mine and smiled, polished and smug, like she had been waiting for this.

“Serena,” she said, her voice sweet in a way that did nothing to hide the cruelty underneath.

I kept my face calm, even though everything inside me felt like it was falling apart.

“I’m done for the evening,” I said evenly. “I’m going upstairs.”

Sebastian stood immediately, a frown forming between his brows. “Serena, wait—”

“I said I’m leaving.”

Something in my voice made him stop.

Without giving anyone the chance to speak again, I turned and walked out. My steps were quick, steady, deliberate. I would not let them see me break.

Outside, the night air hit my skin like ice. I crossed the grounds toward the main house, my thoughts turning faster with every step.

Could Damian really be alive?

And if he was, why had the truth been hidden from me?

Why had everyone around me chosen silence?

The moment I reached my suite, I locked the door behind me and started pacing. My mind would not settle. One question crashed into the next until a single name rose above all of them.

Lester Locke.

A man everyone in our world knew by reputation. Private. Powerful. Untouchable. A billionaire who had quietly built his influence while keeping most of his life hidden from public view. Months ago, he had contacted me about redesigning the crest for one of his companies. Our interactions had been brief, formal, completely professional.

But every time I sat across from him, something about him unsettled me.

Not fear.

Recognition.

I stopped pacing and shook my head, trying to push the thought away before it could take hold.

No.

It couldn’t be him.

It was impossible.

And yet the words from the lounge kept circling back, louder each time.

I went straight to the drawer where I kept letters, contracts, and old business correspondence. My hands were unsteady as I searched through the papers until I found the one I wanted.

A letter in Lester Locke’s handwriting.

I unfolded it and read through it again, as if I might suddenly notice something I had missed before. Some clue in the wording. Some trace of the past. Something that would tell me whether my mind was reaching for hope or stumbling toward the truth.

Nothing clear.

Nothing certain.

Only enough to make the ache in my chest deepen.

I sat at my desk, pulled a sheet of stationery toward me, and forced my shaking hand to steady around the pen.

I wrote only one line.

Lester, are you Damian Vaughn?

I stared at it for a moment, my pulse pounding so hard my fingertips went numb. Then I folded the note, sealed it, and rang for one of the house staff.

When he appeared, I handed him the envelope.

“Make sure this gets to Mr. Locke tonight,” I said.

He nodded and left without question.

The second the door shut behind him, I was alone again with the storm in my head.

Not for long.

A few minutes later, my door flew open hard enough to slam against the wall. Sebastian walked in, his face dark with anger.

“Why did you leave?” he demanded.

I turned slowly to face him. “I told them I wasn’t feeling well.”

His stare hardened. “You’ve been acting strange all night.”

I said nothing.

He took another step toward me. “What are you hiding from me?”

At that, I looked him straight in the eye, letting years of practiced calm cover everything raging underneath.

“That’s an interesting question,” I said quietly. “Maybe you should ask yourself the same thing.”

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, I thought he might say something. Deny it. Lie again. Turn it back on me.

Instead, he only stared at me, then turned sharply and walked out.

A second later, the door slammed shut behind him.

The sound echoed through the room.

I let out a shaky breath and pressed a hand to my chest.

The truth was no longer something buried in the past.

It was moving toward me.

I could feel it.

And if Damian had survived—if my brother was still out there somewhere—then I would find him.

No matter how many secrets I had to tear apart to get to him.
