Chapter 4

Back in my suite, I pulled up the estate’s security footage on my phone and started going through the earlier recordings.

I watched in silence, each second driving the truth deeper into me. Sebastian Thompson—my husband, the man I had built my whole life around—had betrayed me so completely that even breathing felt difficult. Everything I had once called love, loyalty, and certainty now felt like something tightening around my throat.

Colette’s voice still echoed in my head.

“She didn’t mean anything to you tonight, did she?”

And Sebastian’s answer—weak, evasive, almost annoyed—hurt more than I had prepared for.

The pain didn’t stay in my chest. It spread through me, heavy and sharp, until I felt like I was carrying it in every part of my body. Anger pressed hard against my ribs, begging to be let out, daring me to go downstairs and tear apart every lie they had built between them.

But I forced myself to stay still.

“Not yet,” I whispered, my voice shaky at first, then steadier. “I need everything.”

I wasn’t going to confront him with guesses or suspicions. I wanted proof. Not just for myself, but for everyone who still admired Sebastian Thompson and believed he was a man worth respecting.

They deserved to know exactly who he really was.

So I kept watching.

Every stolen touch.

Every private conversation.

Every glance that lasted too long.

Every kiss.

Each second on that screen ruined something else inside me. He hadn’t just betrayed our marriage. He had turned our home—our life together—into the place where he humiliated me without a second thought.

At some point, I couldn’t watch any longer.

I locked the screen and dropped the phone onto the bed, then pressed a trembling hand to my chest as if I could somehow stop myself from falling apart.

The pain sat there like a blade.

“This ends tonight,” I whispered.

And this time, I meant it.

---

The next morning, I walked into Sebastian’s office without knocking.

The room smelled like him—leather, whiskey, cedar, and that cold control he carried everywhere. But beneath it was something else. A trace of feminine perfume lingered in the air, soft and floral and completely out of place.

Colette.

Even here, she had left her mark.

I crossed the room and placed a small box in the center of his desk. Inside were the remains of a marriage I barely recognized anymore—old notes, small gifts, keepsakes that had once meant everything and now felt almost unbearable to look at.

On top, I left a single handwritten note.

For the husband who was never worthy of me. Happy anniversary.

Then I took a slow breath and opened the drawer where he had kept every letter I’d written him over the years.

I stared at them for a moment.

Page after page of love. Trust. Hope. Loyalty. Pieces of myself I had given him without ever holding anything back. At the time, I believed they mattered. Now they looked like proof of how deeply I had loved a man who had never deserved that kind of devotion.

One by one, I gathered them up.

My movements were calm. Deliberate. Almost careful.

It didn’t feel like cleaning out a drawer.

It felt like burying something.

Behind me, the office door opened.

“Serena?”

Sebastian.

I didn’t turn right away. I kept my eyes on the last envelope in my hand before finally saying, “What does it look like I’m doing?”

There was a pause.

Then I heard his footsteps behind me, slow and controlled. “What is all this?”

I turned and met his eyes without hesitation.

“My answer,” I said.

His gaze moved to the box on his desk, then back to me. His expression hardened. “You’re being dramatic.”

A laugh almost escaped me, but there was nothing funny in it.

“Dramatic?” I repeated. “That’s what you call this?”

His jaw tightened. “You’re angry. Fine. But don’t turn one mistake into something bigger than it is.”

I just looked at him.

One mistake.

Not betrayal. Not deception. Not humiliation.

Just a mistake.

“I gave you everything I had,” I said, my voice low and sharp. “My trust. My loyalty. My name. I stood beside you through every mess, every scandal, every fight, every moment that mattered. And this is what you did with it.”

He exhaled hard, frustration flashing across his face. “You don’t know the full story.”

“No,” I said, stepping closer, “I know enough.”

The room went still.

I could feel the anger rising in me again, but this time it didn’t feel wild or messy.

It felt cold.

Clear.

Final.

“You are not the man I thought I married,” I told him. “And I am done giving pieces of myself to someone who treats betrayal like a minor inconvenience.”

Something changed in his expression then. For the first time, I saw something that looked almost like alarm.

He reached for me. “Serena—”

I stepped back before he could touch me.

“No.”

That one word landed hard between us.

“Don’t stand there and tell me to think about the family, the company, or appearances,” I said. “You should have thought about all of that before you brought another woman into our home.”

His mouth tightened. “This isn’t only about you.”

I smiled then, but there was nothing soft in it.

“That’s exactly where you’re wrong,” I said. “For the first time in a very long time, this is about me.”

He went quiet.

I took one last look at him—at the man who had once felt like home, like safety, like a future I could trust—and felt whatever was left between us go completely cold.

“I’m taking my life back,” I said quietly. “You don’t get to keep it just because you got comfortable holding it.”

Then I turned and walked toward the door.

My steps were steady.

I didn’t look back.

Whatever we had been, whatever I had once believed we were, it ended the moment he chose to betray me and expected me to live with it.

This was not my downfall.

It was my leaving.

And my beginning.
