Chapter 2

The Thompson estate’s private dining hall buzzed with conversation, crystal, and carefully practiced laughter. Another celebration. Another flawless evening arranged by Sebastian Thompson with the same control he brought to every part of his life.

To everyone else in the room, the night looked elegant, powerful, enviable—a picture of wealth, family, and a marriage people admired from a distance.

To me, it felt like suffocating slowly beneath candlelight and silk.

I stepped inside wearing a dark green gown, understated but refined, the kind of dress that didn’t demand attention. It was nothing like the ruby necklace Colette had been given. In our world, a billionaire’s wife was expected to own a room without trying, to be unforgettable without ever looking as though she was competing.

Tonight, I felt invisible.

Not because I lacked presence.

Because another woman had made sure the attention no longer belonged to me.

Sebastian met me near the entrance, polished and commanding in a black dinner jacket. A smile spread across his face as he looked me over, smooth and practiced enough to fool anyone watching.

“You kept everyone waiting,” he said, amusement in his voice, though the look in his eyes told me he hadn’t appreciated it.

“I had things to finish,” I replied, lifting my lips into a polite smile that held none of the warmth he expected.

He leaned down and brushed a kiss against my cheek, brief and empty, more performance than affection.

“You still know how to make an entrance,” he murmured.

I didn’t answer. I simply let him lead me farther inside.

The moment we walked in together, heads turned. Glasses lifted. A ripple of applause moved through the room. Men greeted Sebastian with respect, women smiled with admiration, and he acknowledged it all with the ease of a man who had spent his life being watched.

I stayed at his side, composed and quiet, playing the role expected of me.

The room glittered with old money and influence. Investors exchanged stories over whiskey. Their wives traded compliments and quiet judgments. Laughter drifted from every corner as if the night were sincere and not built on image, status, and carefully hidden cracks.

Sebastian moved through it all effortlessly, charming and untouchable, every bit the man they believed him to be.

But my attention drifted elsewhere.

At the far end of the room, Colette Mercer stood with a glass of red wine in one hand, wearing a scarlet gown that clung to her like intention. She looked less like a guest and more like a challenge.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

The moment her eyes found mine, the corners of her mouth lifted. Slowly, deliberately, she raised her glass in my direction, like we were sharing a private joke.

My fingers tightened around the stem of my own glass until the chill bit into my skin.

Humiliation burned hot beneath my calm expression.

“Serena.”

Sebastian’s voice cut through my thoughts. I turned to find him watching me, one hand resting lightly on my arm.

“There’s something I want you to have,” he said.

I looked at him evenly. “Another gift?”

He either ignored the edge in my tone or chose not to hear it. Reaching into his pocket, he handed me a small velvet box, confidence already settling at the corners of his mouth.

“This one should make you happy.”

I opened it.

Inside lay a pair of sapphire earrings, exquisite and expensive, chosen to match the necklace he had already given me earlier. Blue again. Always blue. Elegant, tasteful, restrained.

Never what I would have chosen.

“They’re beautiful,” I said quietly, though I felt nothing.

I closed the box and set it aside without ceremony.

For the briefest second, irritation crossed his face. Then it disappeared beneath the same smooth mask he wore for everyone else.

“Come,” he said. “Sit with me.”

He guided me toward the head of the table, where power was always most visible.

We hadn’t taken more than a few steps before Colette crossed the room toward us, every movement graceful and deliberate. She didn’t ask for attention. She simply took it.

She stopped in front of Sebastian first, smiling as though she belonged there.

“You look especially handsome tonight, Sebastian,” she said softly, letting one hand rest against his sleeve with an ease that made my stomach turn.

Sebastian let out a low laugh. Instead of stepping back, he let his hand settle briefly over hers.

“And you never fail to make an impression, Colette.”

The exchange lasted only seconds.

It was enough.

I felt it like something sharp sliding between my ribs.

Then she turned to me, her expression sweet on the surface and poisonous underneath.

“Serena,” she said warmly. “That necklace looks lovely on you. Sebastian has always had exceptional taste.”

I met her smile with one of my own. “Thank you. And your dress certainly stands out. Not everyone could wear something so bold and carry it well.”

The sweetness in her face thinned.

Only a little.

But I saw it.

The air between us tightened, invisible and sharp, every word still wrapped in politeness while everything underneath it threatened to break open.

Beside me, Sebastian shifted as if he could feel the tension he had created.

“Let’s not make dinner uncomfortable,” he said with a light chuckle. “Tonight is supposed to be enjoyable.”

Colette’s eyes stayed on mine as she lifted her glass. “Of course. It’s a night for love, loyalty, and the kind of bonds that last.”

She meant every word as a weapon.

My pulse kicked harder, but I refused to let her see it land.

So I raised my own glass with measured grace.

“To the connections that endure,” I replied. “Whether they’re celebrated in public or hidden in private.”

Her smile tightened.

Sebastian, whether unwilling or unable to deal with it, turned away and started speaking to one of his business partners as though the quiet war between us had never happened.

Dinner dragged on.

Every laugh scraped at my nerves. Every toast sounded false. The room was full of polished smiles and pretty lies, and with every passing minute, the act became harder to survive.

I could feel the weight of every betrayal pressing harder against my chest. Every glance. Every lie. Every moment I had been expected to sit still and look graceful while my marriage came apart in front of me.

By the time dessert was served, I knew I couldn’t stay there another second.

I set down my glass and rose with a quiet excuse about needing air.

No one stopped me.

The hallway outside was dim, quiet, and blissfully empty. I kept walking, my heels clicking against the marble floor, until I reached the shadowed corridor near the west wing.

Only then did I let myself breathe.

Anger hit me in waves, hot enough to make my hands shake. I pressed one palm against the wall and forced myself to steady, fighting to keep my composure from cracking.

Then a man’s voice broke the silence behind me.

Low. Sharp. Familiar.

“How much longer is she planning to keep pretending?”

I froze.

Every muscle in my body locked.

Slowly, I turned, my heart pounding as I searched the corridor.

Sebastian stood a few feet away, his back half-turned to me, his phone pressed to his ear.

For one wild second, I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe he wasn’t talking about me. Maybe I had finally become so suspicious, so hurt, that I was hearing betrayal even where it didn’t exist.

Then he spoke again.

“She knows how these dinners work. She knows what’s expected of her.”

My breath caught.

I didn’t move. Didn’t make a sound.

He exhaled sharply, his voice dropping lower, colder. “I’m tired of the attitude. If she can’t handle the arrangement, that’s her problem.”

Arrangement.

The word hit harder than it should have.

As though our marriage had become a business agreement I had somehow failed to manage properly.

As though I were the inconvenience.

I felt something inside me go still.

On the other end of the call, whoever he was speaking to must have said something, because Sebastian let out a quiet laugh. Not warm. Not genuine. Just careless.

“No,” he said. “She won’t leave. She likes the life too much.”

I think that was the moment something truly ended.

Not when I found the necklace.

Not when Colette texted me that photo.

Not even when he touched her in front of me and expected me to pretend not to notice.

It was this.

Hearing the man I had loved reduce me to a woman too weak, too spoiled, too comfortable to walk away.

He turned then, probably sensing movement, and his eyes found mine.

For the first time that night, his expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Surprise.

He pulled the phone from his ear. “Serena—”

I straightened away from the wall.

My face felt strangely calm, though I could still hear my own heartbeat in my ears.

“You don’t have to explain,” I said.

He ended the call, his jaw tightening. “You weren’t supposed to hear that.”

A bitter laugh almost rose in my throat, but I swallowed it.

“No,” I said softly. “I don’t think I was supposed to hear any of it.”

He took a step toward me. “You’re upset.”

The words were so absurd I almost looked around to see if there was someone else standing there.

“Am I?” I asked.

His gaze sharpened, like he was already trying to regain control of the moment. “This isn’t the place.”

Of course. Not here. Not where it might inconvenience him.

I nodded once. “You’re right.”

Something in my voice must have made him pause.

“Serena,” he said, more carefully now.

But I was already done.

I looked at him—really looked at him—and saw the truth with a clarity that almost felt merciful. The man in front of me was still handsome, still powerful, still every bit the man the world admired.

But he was not mine anymore.

Maybe he hadn’t been for a long time.

“I’m tired, Sebastian,” I said. “Enjoy your dinner.”

Then I walked past him.

He said my name again, but I didn’t stop.

For the first time in a long time, I didn’t care whether he followed.

Because somewhere between the lies, the rubies, and the way he had spoken about me like I was a burden wrapped in diamonds, something inside me had finally hardened.

And once a woman stops breaking, she starts leaving.
