Chapter 4

I was already a ghost—breathing, walking, but no longer alive.

Soon enough, the world would believe it too.

The divorce papers dug into my palm as I stepped out of the Massino mansion for the last time. The grand iron gates closed behind me with a finality that echoed through my bones. My cheek still burned where Leonardo’s hand had struck me, but the real pain was deeper, buried somewhere in the hollow space where my heart used to be.

No one tried to stop me. Not the guards stationed by the door, not the servants who once bowed their heads when I passed. Their silence was louder than any insult. I wasn’t their lady anymore. Not a wife. Not a mother. Just another ghost exiled from the empire she helped build—replaced before the ashes of her life had even cooled.

I held tighter to the small duffel bag slung over my shoulder—Clara’s. Inside were the last fragments of her existence: a worn-out teddy bear, a pair of pink shoes, a ribbon she used to wear in her hair. Leonardo could have the empire, the mansion, the power. But this—this tiny bundle of memories—was mine.

My steps carried me aimlessly through the dark streets, each one fueled by bitterness and disbelief. Every image of that night replayed like a curse—the accusation in Leonardo’s eyes, Ariana’s crocodile tears, the sting of betrayal cutting deeper than the slap itself.

But beneath the grief, something sharp began to form. Purpose.

My hand trembled as I dialed a number I hadn’t called in years. It rang twice. Then came the rough, familiar voice.

“Luciana?”

“Ronan,” I rasped. “I need you.”

A pause. Then, low and cautious: “Where are you?”

“Doesn’t matter,” I said, steadying my voice. “I need a car. A body. And a fire.” I exhaled slowly. “I need the world to think I’m dead.”

For a moment, there was silence. Then a dark chuckle. “You finally decided to wake up.”

“Just tell me you can handle it.”

“I can.”

“Then make it look real.”

“Consider it done. Disappear, Val.”

I hung up, dropped the phone into a storm drain, and didn’t look back. Luciana Massino had died the moment Leonardo stopped looking at me with love.

Ronan was a man I’d once saved from death—a debt he hadn’t forgotten. Within hours, he brought everything I needed: a stolen car, new identification, and the body of a woman who’d met a violent end. She was about my height, my build. Close enough to fool anyone.

I should’ve felt something—remorse, horror—but those emotions had been buried with my daughter.

We drove until the city lights vanished behind us. The road curved along a cliffside where the sea swallowed the horizon. Ronan positioned the body in the driver’s seat, poured gasoline across the car, and lit a cigarette, waiting for my signal.

But there was one last thing I needed to do. One final goodbye.

To him.

I dialed Leonardo’s number. The line rang twice before someone answered.

“Leonardo isn’t available,” a syrupy voice purred.

My blood ran cold. “Ariana.”

A soft laugh spilled from her lips. “You really don’t know when to quit, do you? Calling him one last time—how tragically desperate.”

My grip on the phone tightened. “Put him on.”

“Why?” she mocked. “So he can call you a whore again? Maybe hit you one more time?”

“Careful,” I hissed.

“Or what?” she teased. “You’ll cry?”

I said nothing, my pulse pounding.

Then she spoke again—light, almost playful. “You know, it’s funny,” she said. “Everyone’s mourning your little girl... but the truth is—Cristian was never sick.”

My world stopped. “What did you just say?”

A cruel laugh. “We faked it. The illness, the transfusion—everything. And Leonardo believed every word.”

The phone nearly slipped from my hand. My heart felt like it was tearing itself apart. Clara died for nothing. They had taken her from me—for a lie.

Ariana’s laughter echoed in my ears long after the call ended.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t scream. I just sat there, trembling, as the fury inside me rose like fire through my veins.

Leonardo. Ariana. Every single person who helped destroy me—they would burn.

“You sure about this?” Ronan asked quietly, flicking his lighter open.

I stared at the flame. “I stopped being sure of anything the day my daughter died. But this?” I met his eyes. “This I know.”

He nodded once and tossed the lighter into the car.

The explosion was instant—fire swallowing the night, devouring the body that would soon be identified as me. The heat seared my skin, but I didn’t flinch. I just watched, my reflection dancing in the flames.

By the time the sirens came, Luciana Massino was gone. Another tragic accident. Another dead woman no one would mourn for long.

Good. Let them think I was ash.

Because I wasn’t doing this for Leonardo’s guilt or his pity. I was doing it for vengeance. For justice. For Clara.

By dawn, I was a ghost crossing the city’s underbelly. New passport. New face. New life.

I stood before a cracked motel mirror, touching the freshly dyed strands of my hair—jet black now, erasing every trace of the blonde he once adored.

The woman staring back wasn’t broken anymore. She was something else entirely.

“Welcome back to hell,” I murmured.

The world believed Luciana Massino was dead.

And maybe she was.

But the woman who replaced her?

She was born in fire.

And she was coming for them all.
