Chapter 3

I awoke before the first light touched the rooftops of the city.

Before the distant cries of the street vendors. Before the estate stirred with the clatter of servants preparing the morning. No summons from Caelan, no message from the family council. Just instinct. The deep, aching instinct of a woman who had spent decades rising before everyone else, bending to the will of a family that had long since erased her from its history.

No tears came. No ache. Just breath. In. Out. Hollow and empty.

I splashed cold water on my face, tied my hair into a tight knot at the nape of my neck, and rubbed a small amount of balm over my cracked lips. Nothing ornate. Nothing flattering. Only enough to look presentable. Enough to endure another day of servitude.

When I bent down to retrieve the cloth I kept under the pantry shelf, my fingers brushed against something tucked away beneath the floorboard. The crimson satchel.

I lifted it carefully. The leather was worn, softened by years of secrecy. Inside lay the relics of a life they had tried to erase: small silver coins I had earned trading pastries with neighboring families, a modest signet ring gifted by my father, and a faded photograph taken when I was eighteen—before I had pledged myself to Caelan, before my name became a footnote in his empire.

In that photo, I was fearless. My eyes bright, my posture unbent. The world had seemed full of possibility, and love had seemed mutual—a partnership, not a cage.

I closed the satchel and carried it downstairs like a quiet promise.

The kitchen was cold and dim, the hearth unlit. I sparked the fire, set a pot of water to boil, and began preparing breakfast. Meat sizzled over the flame, eggs cracked into the pan, bread sliced neatly. The motions were automatic, ritualized. I fed the family before I fed myself, as I had done for decades.

The faint shuffle of footsteps reached me then. Low, deliberate, confident. Laughter, soft and pleased.

They entered. Bianca first, draped in one of Caelan’s tailored jackets, sleeves rolled casually, hair tousled and scented with him. Caelan followed, clean, relaxed, as if the previous night’s revelries had somehow purified him.

“Coffee, Lyneth,” Bianca said lazily, leaning against the counter as though she owned the house. “Mine with cream. His black.”

I handed them the mugs wordlessly. Caelan didn’t glance at me.

“Cook bacon and omelets,” he said flatly, “the way she likes. None of your oversalted nonsense.”

Bianca smirked. “She’s careful about my figure,” he added with a chuckle. “Though honestly, I don’t think it matters much.”

“Well, not everyone wants to look like a stick,” she said sweetly.

I smiled politely. Not for amusement. Not for pride. Survival required a mask.

The kitchen filled with the hiss of oil and the clatter of pans. Behind me, they discussed the Luciana estate gala, the opulent guest rooms, the imported wine, the silk sheets. Their voices carried easily, effortlessly, while I moved like a ghost, serving them, feeding them, unnoticed.

Then the front door burst open.

“Everyone’s here!” Salvatore’s booming voice announced, echoing through the halls. “Let the celebration begin!”

Isabella followed, excitement etched across her features. “Mom! Look!” She held up a fine leather bag. “Bianca gave this to me last night! Can you believe it? And these earrings too! She’s so generous!”

The twins stormed in behind them. Marco wore dark sunglasses, Allesio carried a massive parcel.

Isabella twirled happily. “Bianca gave us the entire penthouse suite at the Luciana estate. We slept like royalty!”

“And the bathing chamber,” Salvatore added, pouring wine. “A marble basin you could swim in.”

It was barely morning.

Allesio and Marco unveiled the parcel. Inside was a large portrait—an image of the family at the Luciana gala. Bianca stood proudly in the center. Caelan’s arm draped around her waist. My sons smiled beside her. The twins in front, radiating joy. And me? I was absent.

“Look, Grandma,” Allesio said, smugly. “We look like a real family, don’t we?”

Marco shrugged. “Too bad you weren’t invited. You’d have looked more like the housemaid anyway.”

Laughter rang through the room. Caelan chuckled lightly. Isabella nearly doubled over. Bianca sipped her coffee with deliberate calm.

“Don’t worry, Lyneth,” she said sweetly, venom hidden beneath the sugar. “I’ll leave some dresses in your wardrobe. Perhaps a bottle of perfume as well.” Her eyes sparkled cruelly. “They’ll be tight, but I’m sure you can manage.”

Caelan studied the portrait, nodding in satisfaction. “Dress a corpse in silk,” he muttered, “and it’s still a corpse. Disappointment clings to her scent.”

More laughter. More celebration. And me? I collected the empty dishes, plate by plate, scrubbing quietly while staring through the window at the blossoming lemon tree. They thought this humiliation would finish me. They had no idea what happens when a woman who has spent decades begging for recognition finally stops asking.

---

Night fell. The estate quieted. The laughter faded into drunken sleep. I returned to the main hall.

The portrait hung above the fireplace—large, commanding, impossible to ignore. Salvatore had positioned it perfectly so every visitor would see the “perfect family.” A flawless empire. A lie.

I hadn’t noticed Caelan enter behind me.

“Jealous again?” he asked, bored, contempt dripping from every word. “Staring at that painting like it holds your worth.”

I said nothing.

“If I could turn back time, Lyneth,” he continued, voice hardening, “I would have left you in your provincial home. Bianca should have been my Luna from the start. She is superior in every way.”

He stepped closer. “Class. Intelligence. Knows how to run a family. Knows how to command respect.”

Then he kicked me. Hard. My knees buckled. Pain flared through my joints. I fell onto the cold marble. The chill pressed against my palms, familiar, almost comforting.

Tears slid down unbidden—not for the pain—but for the sound of his retreating footsteps, leaving me behind again.

“Enough dramatics,” he muttered. “You’re too old for them.”

Moments later, his voice floated from the private speaker system to Bianca’s room, warm, playful, tender.

“Hey, love,” he murmured to her. “Missing me already? I’m packing now. Soon, the ocean. Just you and me beneath the moon. This voyage will be unforgettable.”

I wiped my face slowly. The sound of their laughter, their ease, the intimacy between them—carried a weight I had not felt in decades.

And I remembered.

A woman who survives this does not remain broken. She sharpens her mind. She waits. She strikes when the moment is hers.
