Chapter 4

I didn’t follow Caelan.

He moved through the estate with Bianca at his side, his laughter spilling into the halls like a young heir showing off his first triumph. His voice carried easily, confident and careless, as he spoke into the comm-scroll he always carried—teasing her about late-night parties and imported wine, as if I weren’t crouched on the marble floor, knees throbbing, heart shattered, every fragment of pride scattered in silence.

I rose slowly. My joints protested—the accumulated weight of thirty years of quiet obedience pressing down on every bone, every muscle. My fingers dragged along the polished floor for balance as I gathered what little remained of myself.

I stepped into the washroom and closed the door softly behind me.

The mirror reflected a stranger. Swollen eyes. Red, raw cheeks. Hair tangled and lackluster. A shadow. Or maybe a ghost—the faint memory of the woman I had been before love stripped away my identity, before silence took my voice and left me nothing but name alone.

No ceremony marked this loss. No announcement of death. Yet I mourned all the same.

Not for him. Not for what we had built.

For me. For the girl who had once been whole, fearless, alive.

Footsteps passed the door. Caelan.

No knock. No pause. Not even a glance to confirm I still breathed. He was laughing, still warm, still human—but only when speaking to her. Only when Bianca’s voice met his.

Then, over his shoulder, he tossed words like a knife:

“Pack my things. We leave at dawn. A voyage by sea.”

No “please.” No recognition. No acknowledgment that a soul had ever shared this house with him.

I nodded automatically. Not that he was looking.

I dried my hands on a rough towel, then crossed the hallway into his private quarters.

Chaos reigned. Ceremonial suits tangled with traveling coats. Boots scattered carelessly. Cloaks thrown over chairs like discarded paper. Caelan lived like a spoiled heir rather than the Don of a family empire.

I began the familiar work. Folding his garments. Sorting shirts, travel pants, cloaks, and his ceremonial vests. Polishing cufflinks with the edge of my sleeve. Arranging amulets and potions with the care of decades.

My elbow struck the small table beside the bed. A leather folder slid to the floor.

Expecting ledgers, I bent to retrieve it. And froze.

Inside lay a travel ledger stamped with the mark of the Luciana shipping clan. Names written in precise, elegant ink:

Caelan Morroco.

Bianca Morroco.

Salvatore Morroco.

Isabella Morroco.

Marco Morroco.

Allesio Morroco.

Not one mark of me. Not a line, a title, a note to indicate I shared even a fraction of this journey with him.

The voyage I had dreamed of since I was eighteen—the one he had whispered about beneath the old oak in my father’s estate—was never meant for me. Three days from now was Bianca’s birthday. My own? Forgotten.

I folded the ledger carefully, replaced it on the table, and began packing his trunk. Boots polished to a reflective shine. Clothes folded with exacting precision. Healing herbs, tonics, and strength elixirs arranged like offerings for a long journey.

The door burst open. Salvatore’s voice boomed, casual and entitled:

“Ma, pack my things too. Isabella’s busy. Don’t forget the twins—Allesio needs his tablets, Marco wants the blue travel suit. Pack snacks—they’ll get restless.”

Of course they would.

So I packed. Every tunic, every shirt, every vial of perfume tucked between folds for protection, every ration carefully sealed. Each item placed meticulously into its trunk. With care. With devotion. With the habit that had built this empire, silently, over decades.

When I finished, I retreated to my room and closed the door. The silence pressed against me like a weight. I sat on the edge of the bed, trembling as memories rose unbidden.

I was eighteen again.

Back before Vincenzo had become Caelan. Before the man who would one day kick me aside, erase me, and prepare a voyage for another woman had existed.

“Lyneth,” he had said, gripping my hand beneath moonlight, “I swear I’ll take care of you. Always. No matter what happens.”

My heart had fluttered then. “You’ll never have to worry,” he promised softly.

“Even if the world turns against us?” I whispered.

“Especially then,” he had replied.

Another night. The house silent, servants asleep. Our hands intertwined beneath the silver glow of lantern light.

“I don’t care about status or power,” he murmured fiercely. “You are my future. No one can touch what we build together.”

I had laughed, young and fearless. “You make me believe in forever.”

And he kissed me like he meant it. Like forever had already begun.

Forever ended the day my father discovered us.

“You cannot drag our bloodline into disgrace,” my father had said, storm incarnate. “If you marry him, you are no longer my daughter.”

“I love him,” I said, trembling but firm.

“You love a shadow,” my father replied. “And shadows consume everything.”

Thirty years later, the boy who had sworn to protect me had vanished. In his place was a man who kicked me aside and packed a voyage for another.

I sat in the quiet room, watching my past crumble into dust. And for the first time in decades—I smiled. Not gently. Not kindly. Bitterly.

I moved to the corner of the room where an old communication stone rested. Forgotten, unused by everyone in the house. I pressed my palm to its surface, whispered the activation rune.

A faint glow.

A distant connection stirred. Once. Twice. Three times.

Then a voice answered.

“…Hello?”

Older. Weightier. But unmistakable.

My throat tightened. I could not speak. Tears slipped down as I gripped the stone like a lifeline.

“…Father,” I whispered, voice breaking. “It’s me. Lyneth.”
