Chapter 2

The dawn offered no comfort, no relief.

The first I heard of the celebration was from Marco, shoving dried root chips into his mouth as if the news itself were candy.

“Bianca booked the entire upper hall of the Luciana estate!” he announced, eyes sparkling with excitement. “Grandpa says it’s a massive gathering. Exclusive for the family.”

I froze mid-sweep, broom braced against my shoulder.

“Us?” I asked softly, almost to myself.

Allesio laughed, flicking crumbs from his fingers. “You’re not invited, Ma. Grandpa said you’re… not really up for it. Look at you.”

Not up for it. As if I were fragile, insignificant, a relic better left out of sight.

By evening, the estate had emptied, leaving only the faint scent of polished marble and candle wax. Caelan spent the last moments before departure meticulously preparing himself. He applied the rare cologne reserved for council meetings or encounters with rival dons. His navy ceremonial tunic hung perfectly over his broad shoulders, while he straightened the collars of Marco and Allesio as a proud patriarch would align his heirs.

Salvatore stood nearby in his tailored suit, posture stiff, eyes sharp with quiet arrogance.

“Remember,” Caelan said in that calm, unshakable tone of his, smoothing the boys’ cuffs, “Bianca organized this gathering because she cares for us. She represents the family.”

“We know, Grandpa,” the twins chorused cheerfully.

Then Marco added casually, without hesitation, “That’s why we love Bianca more than Grandma Lyneth.”

The words hit me like a bullet.

But they didn’t pause. Didn’t glance back. Didn’t bring anything for me. Not even a courtesy nod. The door slammed behind them, echoing through the estate like a coffin lid sealing my place in the shadows.

I was left alone in the center of the hall. My slippers whispered against the cold marble. A basket of folded linens pressed against my chest. My stomach growled faintly, reminding me I hadn’t prepared dinner. Why bother?

Driven by morbid curiosity, I powered on the surveillance orb in the sitting room. The crystal flickered, casting a soft glow, and the scene appeared:

The Luciana estate glimmered with lanterns and chandeliers, polished to perfection. Musicians played softly while the guests—men in fine suits, women in gowns that rivaled royalty—gathered around the long banquet tables.

There she was. Bianca, draped in a luxurious fur stole, her golden hair catching every light. Caelan stood beside her, proud and easy, his arm casually resting against her back. Salvatore and his partner smiled like well-groomed heirs greeting the family. Marco and Allesio sipped drinks from delicate glasses, performing every gesture with exaggerated sophistication.

A herald’s voice echoed faintly from the orb. “A private gathering in Morocco. Bianca’s triumphant return. The family behind one of the region’s most influential trading empires.”

Frame after frame, I searched the images.

And I wasn’t there. Not in the background, not in the whispers, not even in the shadowed corners where my presence might have been tolerated.

They raised their glasses to toast. I sat alone, nursing a cup of bitter, tepid tea. I wiped the fogged glass of the orb, trying to erase the image that had already embedded itself in my chest.

Then I saw it. A fleeting moment: Bianca leaned toward Caelan and whispered something. They laughed together. My son joined them. I didn’t hear the words, but I knew. The cruelty settled in my chest like ice.

Hours passed. Past midnight. The estate lay silent. Then the front door creaked open.

For a moment, I hoped it might be Salvatore.

It wasn’t.

Bianca entered first, heels clicking confidently against the marble, guiding Caelan inside. He leaned on her, unsteady, tunic rumpled, eyes unfocused from too much wine.

“Oh, Lyneth,” she said, her voice light as silk, noticing me standing at the staircase. “Still awake?”

Her hand rested casually on his arm, familiar and possessive.

“Salvatore and the twins are staying in my quarters,” she continued, the curve of her lips sweet but venomous. “Too tired to return tonight. But Caelan cannot sleep in unfamiliar rooms.”

Her smile sharpened. “Poor thing.”

I knew immediately it was a lie. She was here for only one reason: to ensure I saw.

“I promised to take care of him,” she said, mockingly tender. “That’s what family does, isn’t it?”

She reached into her bag and tossed a small container toward me. It bounced once, rolling to a stop at my feet.

“Leftovers,” she said casually. “You look like a frail old sapling, sister-in-law. Really. You should take better care of yourself.”

I didn’t move. My fingers clenched into tight fists.

“I’ll help Caelan upstairs,” she said slowly, each word deliberate. “I know you no longer share a chamber. He told me. Said your side of the estate reeks of failure and regret.”

My hand twitched. I could almost strike her—but for what? My heart was already splintering.

Then the final blow: Caelan lifted his head slightly, drunken affection softening his eyes.

“You’re perfect,” he slurred. “Not like her. You… you’re everything, Lizzy.”

They ascended the staircase together. Her laughter trailed down the hall like a curse, a constant reminder of what I had lost.

It wasn’t just humiliation. It was erasure. They didn’t just humiliate me. They replaced me. Obliterated my place, my voice, my history in this estate.

I sat on the cold marble, shivering, but something inside me had already begun to stir.

A woman who survives this does not remain broken. She remembers. She sharpens her mind. She plans quietly. She waits.

And when she rises… the house will know her again.
