From Rejection to Royalty: The Executioner Luna
Chapter 3
The High Priest stepped forward on the marble dais, raising his withered, wool-draped arms toward the high arched windows. High above the timber rafters, the Blood Moon reached its absolute zenith, casting a deep, crimson halo over the surrounding mountain peaks.
The Great Hall fell into an absolute, breathless hush. The laughter died. The clinking of iron goblets ceased. The ambient noise of hundreds of waiting wolves evaporated into the freezing draft sweeping through the vast stone chamber.
"The celestial hour has arrived!" the High Priest’s voice boomed across the silent room. "Let the Moon Goddess reveal the sacred threads of fate!"
He lowered a burning torch into the holy brass censer.
The sage inside caught fire, blooming into bright silver embers that spilled thick, fragrant spirals of smoke into the air. Every unmated wolf in the line held their breath. Some shifted nervously from foot to foot, praying for a spark of light or a whisper of scent to signal their destiny. Near the front of the queue, Cynthia tilted her head up, a radiant, triumphant smile fixed on her painted lips, her diamond necklace sparkling beneath the amber lanterns as she braced to be named Luna.
At the very end of the line, Iris stood completely still.
She held her ripped cotton dress tight against her exposed collarbone, her eyes closing as the cold floor bit into her thin shoes. She didn't pray for power. She didn't pray for a crown.
She simply closed her eyes and whispered a single, fragile word into the silent air:
"Please..."
High above her on the dais, Alpha Ronan was completely unravelling.
His eyes weren't on the High Priest. They weren't on the sacred flames. His golden-brown gaze kept darting down to his left fist, where the crumpled parchment from the High Seer was pressed so hard into his palm that his skin burned.
His wolf was thrashing wildly inside his skull, clawing against his ribs like a caged beast trying to rip through its bars. The creature roared in his mind, desperate, hungry, demanding that he step down from the platform and claim what was theirs.
The High Seer's warning flashed through his mind. The parchment felt as heavy as iron in his hand, and cold dread spread through his veins. He tried to look away from the back of the room. He forced his head toward Cynthia. He tried to focus on his elders, on his duties, on the border defenses of his realm.
He failed. His eyes dragged themselves back down the long aisle, locking directly onto the small, ragged girl standing in the cold shadows.
Then, the universe detonated.
It was not a gentle realization. It was not a soft, romantic spark. It was a violent, supernatural explosion that ripped through the Great Hall with the physical force of a collapsing mountain.
The holy sage in the brass censer flared into a blinding, white-hot pillar of silver fire that shot straight up into the timber rafters.
CRACK.
An invisible shockwave of celestial energy slammed into the stone floorboards. The ambient scents of roast meat, honey-wine, and perfumed oils were instantly obliterated, replaced by an overwhelming, suffocating surge of wild magic that smelled sharply of crushed pine needles, mountain snow, and raw, ozone-charged lightning.
Iris’s feet left the stone floor for a fraction of an inch as the silver light erupted from the altar, bypassed Cynthia, bypassed every noble Beta and Alpha, and slammed squarely into her chest.
A shockwave of white-hot heat surged through her veins, burning away five long years of bitter winter cold in a single heartbeat. Her breath was ripped from her lungs in a sharp, ragged gasp as her heart gave a violent, thrashing leap against her ribs.
Across the room, Ronan stumbled forward. A sharp, guttural groan tore from his throat as the same incandescent energy slammed into his chest. His hands flew to his sternum, his fingers clawing desperately at his dark velvet coat as if trying to rip away the fire burning into his very soul.
Something ancient snapped between them. An invisible thread pulled tight. Ronan's wolf roared so violently that his knees nearly buckled. Every instinct inside him screamed one undeniable truth.
Mate.
Silence slammed down over the Great Hall like a falling iron hammer.
Nobody laughed anymore. The high-born warriors who had been mocking the floor-scrubber seconds ago were completely frozen in place, their tankards hanging limply in their hands. Beta Thomas stood with his mouth open in stunned, bug-eyed silence. The elders stared at the back of the room, their eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated shock. Cynthia’s radiant, confident smile vanished from her face, leaving her pale as a corpse in her crimson silk gown.
The floor-scrubber—the broken, wolf-less Omega—was the divine mate of their Alpha.
At the back of the hall, Iris stood trembling, her hand pressed against her burning, thrumming chest.
A profound, intoxicating rush of pure, unadulterated joy washed over her, so overwhelming that warm tears prickled at the corners of her dark eyes. The years of scrubbing cold stone floors in dirty water, the kicks from Beta warriors, the hunger, the bitter solitude of sleeping beneath the dark stairs—all of it dissolved into nothingness under the warm, blinding light of the bond.
For the first time in years, no one could call her unwanted. The Moon Goddess had seen her. She wasn't broken after all.
Holding her torn collarbone tight against her neck, Iris looked up toward the raised marble platform. Tears gathered on her lashes, reflecting the flickering silver light of the altar as she looked at the tall, magnificent Alpha bound directly to her soul, waiting for him to call her forward.
On the dais, Ronan stood frozen, torn completely in two.
Every instinct screamed at him to run to her. Every lesson he had learned as Alpha screamed at him to stay. His wolf howled in furious protest. His mind calculated the sheer ruin waiting in the shadows. Duty and destiny collided inside him with enough force to split him in half.
Iris smiled.
It was small.
Fragile.
Hopeful.
It almost broke him.
Ronan's fingers tightened around the parchment.
His wolf roared in furious protest.
He took one step backward.
Iris's smile froze.
