Chapter 4

Iris’s small, fragile smile froze on her lips.

High on the triple-tiered marble dais, Ronan stood motionless, his body locked in place after that single, devastating step backward. The entire Great Hall seemed to shrink around them, the atmosphere stretching so thin it threatened to snap.

The invisible thread connecting their souls snapped taut, vibrating with a raw, agonizing frequency. It was a physical force, a magnetic pull so intense that a faint, audible hum resonated in the air between them. Every breath Ronan drew felt like breathing shattered glass; his lungs burned, his blood boiled, and his heart thrashed frantically against his ribs.

Inside his mind, his wolf was tearing itself apart, roaring in pure, hysterical fury.

MINE! GO TO HER! CLAIM HER! his wolf bellowed, slamming against the walls of his consciousness with enough force to make Ronan’s knees tremble. MATE! SHE IS OURS!

Sweat broke out across Ronan’s forehead, glistening beneath the golden amber lantern light. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't look away from Iris, whose hand was still pressed tight against her burning chest, her dark eyes shining with a hope that was beginning to fracture around the edges. Every nerve ending in his body screamed at him to run to her, to fall at her feet, to wrap his arms around her fragile waist and bury his face in her neck.

Neither of them moved. They stood frozen at opposite ends of the vast stone room, bound together by divine magic, separated by an abyss of silent terror.

Beside Ronan, Cynthia’s face had drained of all color, but her sharp, political mind immediately recognized the danger. She saw the sweat on his brow. She saw the agonizing tremor in his hands. She saw him hesitating on the brink of ruin.

If she didn't act now, she would lose everything.

Cynthia glided smoothly to his right side, her crimson silk dress rustling against the marble floorboards. She reached out, placing a light, manicured hand on his forearm—deliberately breaking his concentration—and leaned close enough for her breath to brush his ear.

"Look at her, Ronan," Cynthia whispered, her voice dripping with urgent, poisonous logic. "The Western Pack will never accept a floor-scrubber as their Luna. My father will cancel the trade alliance before dawn. He will march his ten thousand warriors back across the river, leaving your southern border completely exposed."

Ronan’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned under the pressure.

"Your people are watching you," Cynthia purred, her eyes darting to the crowded tables below. "The high lords, the Beta warriors, the elders... they expect an Alpha king, not a weak boy who surrenders his crown to a defective Omega. Do you really want a servant girl who sleeps under the stairs to rule beside you?"

Below the platform, the pack elders closed in like a circle of specters. Elder Vane, his white beard gleaming in the candlelight, took a cautious step forward and met Ronan’s desperate, bloodshot eyes.

"Alpha..." Vane said, his voice low, heavy, and laden with decades of political burden. "Think carefully. The bloodline of the Blood Moon Pack cannot be built on dust."

Beta Thomas nodded grimly beside him, his voice a harsh, rustling whisper. "The stability of the pack comes first, my lord. Strength protects our borders. Not sentiment."

They didn't tell him to hurt her. They didn't tell him to be cruel. They simply reminded him of the crushing weight resting on his shoulders.

In the dark cavern of Ronan’s mind, a devastating battle raged.

His wolf screamed in agony, clawing at his throat, begging for its female. SHE IS OURS! SHE IS OURS!

But Ronan’s rational mind calculated the brutal reality of the world. He remembered the cryptic black wax seal in his hand. He imagined the Western Pack pulling their troops. He imagined rival Alphas scenting weakness on his borders. He imagined his villages burning, his warriors dying in the snow, his people starving through the long winter because their leader chose personal happiness over strategic power.

A leader bears the weight others cannot, he told himself, forcing his heart into an iron vault. If one heart must break so ten thousand may live... then let it be mine as well.

Across the room, Iris knew none of this.

She didn't know about the High Seer’s parchment. She didn't know about the Western Pack's army or the elders' silent pressure. She only saw her fated mate—the man the heavens had bound to her soul—standing high above her, looking down with a face made of stone.

She stood straight, her torn grey collarbone exposed to the freezing draft, her hand resting over her thrumming heart.

She was still smiling that small, fragile, hopeful smile.

Every passing second felt like an eternity carved into her skin. The silence in the hall grew heavier, suffocatingly dense, until even the flickering candles seemed to hold their breath in anticipation.

Then, Ronan stepped forward.

The motion was rigid, mechanical, like a man marching toward his own execution. He stepped to the very edge of the marble dais, his tall, broad-shouldered frame blocking out the light of the altar behind him.

The Great Hall fell into absolute, total silence. Nobody cheered. Nobody breathed.

Ronan drew in a deep, agonizing breath that rattled in his broad chest, suppressing the wild, thrashing protests of his inner wolf with sheer, brutal willpower. He lifted his voice, letting it echo off the vaulted timber rafters with the cold, unyielding resonance of a brass horn.

"Members of the Blood Moon Pack!" Ronan declared, his golden-brown eyes locking onto Iris with an unreadable, icy detachment. "Tonight, the Moon Goddess has spoken. She has revealed the divine spark."

A collective murmur rippled through the front rows. Cynthia’s hand tightened around her silk skirt.

"She has shown us her divine will..." Ronan continued, his tone devoid of all warmth, ringing out like a death sentence. "But an Alpha king must choose what is best for his people! He must choose the survival, the honor, and the unyielding strength of his kingdom above all else!"

He took a slow, deliberate step toward Cynthia, reaching out and lacing his fingers through hers in full view of the court.

"Iris!" Ronan’s voice boomed, cutting through the vast space between them like a blade. "You are an Omega without a wolf, without a lineage, and without the strength to defend this realm. Therefore, before the elders, before my people, and before the heavens..."

He lifted his chin high, his eyes hardening into arctic stone.

"I, Alpha Ronan of the Blood Moon Pack, officially reject you as my mate! I sever this bond!"

SNAP.

The words carried the heavy, crushing weight of Alpha authority.

Iris staggered half a step, a sharp gasp escaping her lips as something invisible tore viciously through her chest. Across the dais, Ronan flinched as if struck hard across the face, his hand jerking against Cynthia's fingers.

Iris didn't scream. She didn't cry out. She didn't collapse to her knees or beg for mercy.

Instead, her small, fragile smile simply faded away.

Her face went completely smooth, blank, and still. Her dark eyes emptied of all light, all hope, and all emotion, turning into dark, impenetrable pools of quiet glass. She simply stood there, receiving the brutal rejection into her chest, her posture remaining perfectly straight and unyielding.

In that single moment, the hopeful girl who had whispered *Please* to the Moon Goddess ceased to exist.

The Great Hall erupted.

The tension that had held the room captive exploded into a deafening, chaotic chorus. High-born warriors pounded their fists onto the wooden tables, roaring with sudden, nervous laughter. Beta women giggled behind their silk fans, pointing at the floor-scrubber standing alone in her torn dress.

"Back to the scullery, Omega!" a warrior yelled, raising his tankard.

The elders exhaled in unison, their shoulders visibly relaxing as the political future of the pack was secured. Beside Ronan, Cynthia let out a soft, triumphant sigh, stepping fully into his shadow with a radiant, possessing smirk.

Only Ronan felt no relief.

Inside his chest, his wolf went utterly silent, curling into a cold, lifeless ball of despair. A hollow, black abyss opened in Ronan’s soul, a permanent, agonizing void where his mate bond should have lived. He stared at Iris, waiting for her to break, but she stood like a ghost in the middle of the roaring storm.

Right when the mocking laughter reached its absolute peak—

BOOM.

A sound like a collapsing mountain detonated directly inside the Great Hall.

The laughter died instantly, choking in the throats of hundreds of terrified wolves.

Every single tallow candle in the vast chamber went out at once, plunging the room into total darkness. Outside the high arched windows, the crimson light of the Blood Moon vanished, turning entirely pitch-black as if a dark hand had smothered the sun.

Then, from the center of the altar, the holy sage flames erupted violently.

They did not burn orange. They did not burn silver. They roared upward in towering, unnatural pillars of deep, terrifying **cobalt blue**.

The stone floorboards trembled violently beneath their feet. The high stained-glass windows rattled in their lead frames, cracking under an immense, supernatural pressure. High-born warriors dropped their tankards, whimpering as their internal wolves cowered in instinctual terror.

High on the dais, Ronan gasped for air, his face turning ghostly white as the temperature in the room plummeted to a freezing, bitter frost. White mist bloomed from his lips as he backed away from the blue flames, his heart hammering in pure panic.

Nobody understood what was happening. Nobody could move.

Then, a voice echoed across the frozen, shadowed hall.

It was not human. It was ancient, vast, and layered with the divine, terrifying resonance of a thousand echoing storms. A female voice, heavy with absolute, wrathful authority, vibrated in the very marrow of their bones:

"YOU DARE..."
