From Broken Promises to True Commitment
Chapter 2
I looked calm, ignoring her anger.
Rita frowned, "Felix, what's the matter with you?
"Are you breaking up with me just for such a trivial thing?"
The smile on Bryce's face got wider.
I had the urge to punch him in the face.
Rita and Bryce grew up together and were considered childhood sweethearts.
The two had been arranged to get married when they grew up, but Bryce went abroad for college, so their marriage was canceled.
They stayed in touch though and were very close.
A year after Rita and I established our relationship, Bryce returned home and met me graciously.
Rita said Bryce was her best friend, also known as her bromeo.
I was sensible and never object to their meeting after knowing their past.
I thought it simply that I should tolerate her if I loved her.
At the beginning, Rita and Bryce met infrequently, and they would go shopping and watch movies together at most.
Later, I was busy with work, but the two started seeing each other more and more frequently.
They would go to various upscale clubs such as bars and private parties together, and they would often return home at midnight.
I was too busy working to care about that, and I didn't think too much about it back then.
Karen had reminded me several times that it was inappropriate for Rita to be with another man all the time, and that I should talk to her about it.
I listened to Karen and talked to Rita about it sometime.
Rita said I was being a mommy's boy, and she told me that Karen was always suspicious of her and imagined things.
Besides, Rita told me that she and Bryce were best friends, and that they had watched each other grow up together.
Rita had long thought of Bryce as if he were her biological brother, so they wouldn't have done anything else.
Finally, Rita even got angry and said, "Since you and Karen don't trust me, that's alright. Let's break up!"
At that time, I was deeply in love with Rita, and I had no direct evidence, so I compromised.
Instead, I told Karen that they were like brother and sister, that nothing would ever happen to them, and that she was thinking too much.
Karen sighed and never mentioned the subject in front of me again.
Because I was the only family Karen had left in the world.
Looking at Bryce's disgusted expression, I said coldly, "Rita, I'm telling you again. Let's break up."
"Felix, I think you're really insane!" Rita said impatiently, "Fine, I'll call Karen right now and let her tell you!"
"You don't need to call, and she won't answer it."
"What a joke! How dare she not answer my call?" Rita sneered, "Don't forget that as soon as I call, all my appointments with the specialists I made earlier will even be canceled immediately!"
The Lewis family was wealthy, powerful, and well-connected. After learning that Karen had a heart condition, Rita asked someone to contact a few of the most authoritative specialists, and she had already made an appointment for a consultation.
However, she didn't realize that Karen was already lying in the urn forever, and that she would never need to be treated by a specialist.
When I didn't say anything, Rita grunted and took out her cell phone.
The call was quickly connected. Upon hearing the ringtone coming from the urn, Rita froze.
"Felix, why do you have Karen's cell phone?"
I looked at her indifferently, still saying nothing.
"Rita is asking you. Are you playing dumb?"
Bryce, who had been an audience, suddenly walked over, and he said with a straight face, "Felix, Rita and you were never in the same world. It's already the luckiest thing in your life that she's willing to marry you, so don't push your luck.
"Hurry up and answer her question!"
I looked at him with disdain and said indifferently, "What if I don't answer?"
"If you don't answer her, you'll get in trouble!" Bryce said viciously, "Rita is the most important person in my life, so I won't let anyone bully her, not even her husband!"
A hint of affection appeared in Rita's eyes as she took Bryce's arm. "Don't be like that, Bryce. Just be nice."
"Rita, I've been back home for so long, and I'm dying to tell you something." Bryce turned to look at her. "I can't hold it back today, and I have to tell you. In fact, Felix doesn't deserve you, and since he wants to break up, you should agree with him!"
Rita bit her lips lightly and didn't say anything.
I had completely realized that Bryce had probably set Rita to be invisible in his previous Instagram post.
Seeing that both of us didn't say anything, Bryce got more agitated, and he pointed at my nose and said, "Felix, I'm going to give you one last chance. Answer Rita's question!"
I said coldly, "No."
"Okay, you made me do it!"
Bryce suddenly punched me in the face.
I was caught off guard by the punch and stumbled suddenly, and the urn I was holding, covered in black cloth, fell to the ground and shattered.
An outdated cell phone appeared in front of everyone.
The missed call was displayed on it, and it was none other than Rita's number.
Upon seeing the ashes all over the ground, Rita and Bryce froze at the same time.
"Bastard, I won't forgive you!"
After watching Karen's urn shatter, I angrily struggled to my feet and pushed Bryce down as forcefully as I could.
Bryce let out a scream and fell to the ground.
"Bryce!"
Rita was stunned.
Maybe she never dreamed that I, who was always polite and humble, would resort to violence.
Besides, I punched her bromeo.
"Rita, do something to stop him!
"Felix is crazy. He's really crazy!"
Upon hearing Bryce's agonizing screams, Rita came back to her senses and immediately asked her bodyguard to stop me.
I glared at Bryce with tears in my eyes.
Rita didn't even look at me and hurriedly helped him up, asking with concern, "Bryce, are you okay?
"Felix, you're an asshole."
Bryce yelled hysterically, "What are you guys waiting for? Beat him up!"
The two bodyguards looked at each other and didn't make a move.
Because they were Rita's bodyguards, not Bryce's.
When Rita took out a tissue and helped Bryce wipe the dust off his pants in concern, she turned back to me and looked at me coldly.
"Felix, apologize to Bryce!"
"No way!" I spat at Bryce. "I'd rather apologize to a pig than to him because he doesn't deserve it!"
Bryce cried like a little girl. "Rita, look, not only did Felix beat me, he even said I was worse than a pig!"
Rita looked completely gloomy. "Felix, both of you are to blame this time, but you shouldn't hit him so hard.
"As long as you apologize to Bryce, this will be over."
With anger still in my eyes, I kept silent.
Rita raised her tone. "I'm going to tell you one last time, apologize to Bryce!"
I spat again. "Bryce, yuck!"
Rita made a wink. The next second, the bodyguard hit me in the belly with a huge fist.
The sharp pain made my vision blur instantly, and I curled my body like a shrimp.
Rita looked quite indifferent. "Felix, I'm just warning you this time. If you still don't apologize, I'll have the bodyguard beat you until you open your mouth!"
I was panting like a cow, but my eyes looked colder. "I won't apologize to him even if you beat me to death."
"Felix, don't push me!" Rita took out her cell phone. "Do you believe I'm going to call and cancel all the specialist appointments right now?"
"Call them if you like. It's up to you."
She was stunned slightly. "Don't you care about Karen's health anymore?"
Looking at the ashes scattered on the floor, I yelled, "No, there's no one I care about in this world anymore!"
"Felix, I'll show you what regret means!"
Rita dialed the number and said coldly, "Susan, cancel all of Karen's specialist appointments immediately!"
"Uh..." The embarrassed voice of Susan, the secretary, came over the phone. "Ms. Lewis, I canceled those appointments the day before yesterday."
"What?" Rita raised her eyebrows in exasperation. "Why did you do that without my permission?"
"Ms. Lewis, it wasn't my idea because Felix's mother was no longer alive."
Upon hearing this, Rita froze. "What? Can you say that again?"
"Felix's mother passed away three days ago."
