Chapter 2

I locked myself in the executive restroom, hands trembling as I spread the photos across the marble counter. There was no mistaking him—the way Michael's fingers curled around the woman's waist, the tilt of his head as he kissed her. My stomach lurched, bile rising in my throat.

I gripped the edge of the sink, staring at my reflection. The woman looking back at me—polished in her tailored Armani suit, not a hair out of place—seemed like a stranger. Behind her composed exterior, something was fracturing, hairline cracks spreading through glass.

"This isn't happening," I whispered, the words hollow against the bathroom tiles.

But it was. The evidence lay before me in glossy 8x10 color.

A sob threatened to escape, but I swallowed it down, years of courtroom discipline kicking in. I couldn't afford to break—not here, not now. I splashed cold water on my face, careful not to smudge my makeup, and took three deep breaths.

The woman who walked back into her office five minutes later showed no trace of devastation. My spine was steel, my expression neutral as I settled across from Ryan Parker.

"I apologize for the interruption," I said, my voice steady. "Let's continue."

Ryan studied me, concern evident in his eyes. "Are you sure you're alright?"

"Perfectly." I gathered the photos, sliding them back into their envelope with fingers that no longer shook. "Based on these, you have solid grounds for divorce. I'd recommend filing under irreconcilable differences rather than adultery—it's cleaner, faster, and keeps details out of public record."

I outlined a strategy for his case with mechanical precision, discussing asset division and potential settlements. All the while, my wedding ring felt like it was burning into my flesh.

"You're remarkably composed," Ryan observed as our meeting concluded. "Most attorneys get flustered when handling emotional cases."

I offered a practiced smile that didn't reach my eyes. "Emotions cloud judgment, Mr. Parker. And in divorce proceedings, clear judgment is what you're paying for."

The irony wasn't lost on me. Here I was, dispensing cold, rational advice while my own marriage crumbled in real-time.

After Ryan left, I canceled my remaining appointments and sent Michael a brief text: *Working late. Don't wait up.*

---

The Espresso Lounge in SoHo was dimly lit and discreet—exactly what I needed. Frank Miller arrived precisely at eight, sliding into the booth across from me without fanfare. At fifty-something with salt-and-pepper hair and eyes that missed nothing, he'd been the firm's go-to investigator for years.

"Victoria," he nodded, accepting the coffee I'd ordered. "This is unusual. Your assistant was vague about the purpose."

"This isn't a firm matter," I said quietly. "It's personal."

Frank's expression didn't change, but his posture shifted slightly—more alert, more focused.

"I need information on my husband." The words tasted like ash in my mouth. "His movements, particularly during evenings and weekends. Any properties not in our shared portfolio. Bank accounts I might not know about."

Frank didn't ask why. That was what I appreciated about him—no judgment, just efficiency.

"I'll need details," he said, pulling out a small notebook. "Patterns, schedules, anything that might help."

I provided Michael's routine, the lies about late meetings, the weekend golf games that seemed to run longer recently. With each detail, the betrayal crystallized, becoming harder, sharper.

"Discretion is paramount," I added. "He can't know he's being watched."

"He won't," Frank assured me. "I'll start tonight."

As he left, I twisted my wedding ring, the habit now a bitter reminder. Ten years together, three years married, and tomorrow would have been our anniversary. Instead of celebrating, I'd be dismantling the elaborate fiction of our life.

---

My phone rang at 6:17 the next morning. I hadn't slept, the bed too empty, too cold without Michael—who had texted late saying he was staying at a hotel near a client meeting.

"I found something," Frank said without preamble. "A beach house in Southampton, purchased two years ago under the name Sterling Ventures LLC. It's not in any of your joint financial records."

My heart constricted. Two years ago—while we were married.

"I need to see inside that house," I said, my voice hollow.

"Already working on it. I can install remote-access cameras, give you a live feed to your secure devices."

"Do it," I said, already calculating the legal implications. "Whatever it costs."

As I hung up, I stared at our wedding photo on the nightstand—Michael and me, radiant with promises now revealed as lies. I placed it face-down, the soft thud like the closing of a coffin.

The Victoria who had existed yesterday was dead. In her place stood someone else—someone colder, harder, and determined to uncover every last secret her husband had buried in the sand of Southampton.
