Chapter 3

I stared at the rental car's navigation system as it guided me through the winding roads of Southampton. The crisp autumn air carried the scent of salt and money—that particular fragrance of wealth that permeated the Hamptons. I'd told my office I was meeting a potential client, but my Gucci sunglasses and brunette wig weren't for any legitimate business meeting. Today, Victoria Shaw was officially on an investigative mission.

Frank had texted me the address of the beach house and the access code to the security feed he'd installed. I parked half a mile away in a public lot and pulled out my tablet, my fingers trembling slightly as I entered the password.

The screen flickered to life, revealing multiple angles of a stunning oceanfront property. The décor was modern minimalist—all white furniture and glass walls that looked out over the Atlantic. It was beautiful, expensive, and completely unknown to me until yesterday.

I waited, my heart hammering against my ribs. At 9:17 AM, the front door opened, and Michael walked in carrying grocery bags. My husband—the man who had texted me last night about his "client meeting in Boston"—was barefoot in linen pants, looking utterly at home in a house I'd never seen.

He moved to the kitchen, unpacking fresh fruit and pastries. Then a woman entered the frame, wrapped in nothing but a white sheet, her honey-blonde hair tousled from sleep. She slipped her arms around his waist from behind, pressing a kiss between his shoulder blades.

"Morning, handsome," she murmured, loud enough for the microphones to catch.

Michael turned, smiling that smile I thought was reserved for me. "Morning, beautiful. I got those croissants you like."

I watched, paralyzed, as they moved around the kitchen together with the easy familiarity of a long-established routine. They made coffee, laughed, fed each other strawberries. It was domestic. Intimate. Real.

Then he reached into one of the bags and pulled out a small velvet box. "Happy two-year anniversary, Amanda."

Two years. While we were married.

She opened it with childlike excitement, gasping at the diamond pendant inside. "It's gorgeous! Just like Victoria's!"

My hand flew to my throat, fingers brushing against the identical necklace Michael had given me for my birthday six months ago. I'd thought it was unique, special.

"Put it on me?" she asked, turning and lifting her hair.

Michael fastened the clasp, then kissed the nape of her neck exactly as he did mine. "Perfect."

I closed the tablet, unable to watch anymore. The taste of bile filled my mouth as I started the car and drove back toward Manhattan, my mind racing faster than the speedometer.

---

The County Clerk's office was fluorescent-lit and smelled of old paper and industrial cleaner. I smoothed down my skirt, adopting the confident stride I used in courtrooms as I approached the counter.

"I need to examine some marriage records for a case I'm working on," I said, flashing my law firm ID. "And I'll need a certified copy of my own marriage certificate as well—my husband and I are refinancing our apartment."

The clerk, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes, didn't question me. Why would she? I was Victoria Shaw, respected attorney, not a woman whose life was unraveling thread by thread.

When she returned with the documents, I thanked her and moved to a corner desk, pretending to review the case files first. Finally, with hands that refused to stay steady, I opened the folder containing my marriage certificate.

The paper inside bore the official seal of New York State. It listed Michael Sterling as the groom. But where my name should have been, it read "Amanda Walsh."

The date was exactly two years ago—the anniversary they were celebrating this morning.

I stared at the document, the world tilting sideways. My marriage certificate—the one framed in our bedroom—was a fraud. The man I'd called husband for three years was legally married to another woman.

I was not Michael Sterling's wife. I never had been.

---

That evening, I sat in my home office, the truth of my situation spreading through me like poison. Michael had texted that he'd be home late—another lie in an endless series of lies. I'd responded with casual affection, playing the role of unsuspecting wife while my soul calcified.

I connected to his cloud storage using the password he thought I didn't know. Years of practicing law had taught me to be thorough, to leave no stone unturned. And there, in a folder labeled "Personal," I found them—emails dating back to when I was studying abroad in London ten years ago.

From: Michael Sterling

To: Amanda Walsh

Subject: My Stand-In Victoria

*Amanda,*

*I can't believe it's been three months since we met. When I first approached you at that bar, it was because you reminded me of Victoria—same build, similar features. I thought it would be a one-night thing while she was away in London. I never expected to feel this way.*

*You're my stand-in Victoria, but sometimes I think you understand me better than she ever could. When she comes back next month, I don't know what I'll do. I should end things with one of you, but I can't bear to lose either.*

I scrolled through email after email, years of correspondence documenting his double life. In some, he complained about me—my long hours, my ambition. In others, he reassured Amanda of his love while planning our wedding.

The most recent was dated last week:

*I know it's hard, living in the shadows. But you're my real wife, Amanda—legally and in my heart. Victoria gives me stability, connections, the life we need to maintain our lifestyle. Once her father transfers the trust fund on our fifth anniversary, we'll have enough. Then it can be just us, forever.*

I closed the laptop, a strange calm settling over me. Ten years of my life had been a performance, a long con orchestrated by the man I loved. The perfect marriage, the perfect couple—all of it built on criminal fraud.

I twisted the wedding ring on my finger one last time before sliding it off and placing it on his pillow. Tonight, I would sleep in the guest room. Tomorrow, I would begin planning exactly how to dismantle Michael Sterling's carefully constructed house of cards.

And when it collapsed around him, I would be the one holding the match.
