Chapter 2

Jaylani’s eyes sparkled as she grabbed Amari’s arm, her voice dripping with honeyed persuasion.

"This is perfect, Amari. No one will stand in our way now."

Amari stared at me with bewilderment, surprised I’d say something like that so casually.

"You really agreed to call off the wedding? I thought you were desperate to marry me?"

Now it was my turn to be puzzled. When did I ever say I wanted to marry him?

Aunt Ivanna had only hinted at it once, and I agreed just to put her at ease.

But did that make me appear desperate in his eyes?

If anyone was rushing, it was the Freeman family.

Without Aunt Ivanna’s financial lifeline, they’d go bankrupt immediately.

Afraid I might change my mind, Jaylani was eager to get rid of me.

"Get out already! Even a second longer in our home with someone like you is just bad luck!"

I looked at Jaylani, her eyes gleaming with triumph as if she’d won some great victory.

But I shook my head. Calling off the wedding didn’t mean the score was settled.

Seeing my response, Jaylani shrieked in frustration.

"What does that mean, Malaya? Already backing out?"

"Typical of you, always talking out of both sides of your mouth!"

I frowned at Jaylani’s harsh words.

Amari also regarded me coldly, dismissing me out of hand.

"Malaya, don’t make me lose all respect for you!"

I nodded, throwing his words right back at him.

Amari looked at me, confused. "What are you trying to say?"

I pointed to the wedding dress Jaylani had destroyed, my voice icy and detached.

"That dress was worth a million dollars, ruined by your dear Jaylani. You need to compensate me now."

Jaylani spat on the ground in response.

"That old rag? Worth a million dollars? Have you lost your mind?"

Then she pointed to the tuxedo I’d cut up.

"That tux of Amari’s was five million! You better pay up now!"

Amari stood by Jaylani, watching me in agreement.

Seeing Jaylani’s arrogance, I nodded.

"I’ll pay you fifty thousand, and you owe me a million."

Jaylani immediately laid into me.

"Not only are you broke, but you’re also deaf! I said five million, not fifty thousand!"

But I knew the brand of Amari's tuxedo; it was only worth fifty thousand.

I looked deeply at Amari, considering giving him a chance.

After all, Aunt Ivanna paired us, and I didn’t want to question her judgment.

"Is that tux really five million dollars?"

To my surprise, Amari nodded along with Jaylani.

"Jaylani’s right, it’s five million."

With Amari backing her, Jaylani looked at me triumphantly.

"You heard him, right? Five million. Pay up!"

But I shook my head. "I really do have five million, but I’m not paying that for something worth fifty thousand."

Both Amari and Jaylani seemed frustrated, with Jaylani continuing her taunts.

"Your five million must be Monopoly money!"

Amari appeared to struggle to contain his anger, warning me sharply.

"Malaya, don’t take this lightly. I’m giving you a chance. Leave my house now."

"Or don’t blame me for what happens next!"

I just shook my head, "I’m not leaving until you pay me a million."

Amari was about to speak, but Jaylani cut him off.

"Amari, don’t waste your breath on someone like her. If she won’t pay, let’s call the cops."

Hearing that, I interrupted immediately.

"Don’t call the police!"
