Chapter 2

I didn't sleep that night. I didn't try.

At Mara's kitchen table, we made a list. Two columns. Left side: what I already knew. Right side: what I could prove. The right side was mostly empty. That was the problem.

"You still share an iCloud with him?" Mara asked. She was pouring more coffee neither of us would drink.

"He set it up last year. For the wedding photos."

"Is it still active on your phone?"

I checked. It was. His face popped up as the account holder. His texts, his photos, his Venmo notifications — all of it syncing quietly in the background for months while he told me I was overthinking things.

Mara looked at me for a long second. "Wren. Legally, if it's a shared account he has access to, and you've been an authorized user this whole time, you are allowed to look. Screenshot everything. Do not delete anything. Do not send anything to yourself in a way that changes the metadata. Just look, and save."

"How much time do I have?"

"Forty-eight hours, tops. He'll figure it out eventually. Probably not fast. But eventually."

I drove home at two a.m. My Airbnb was a small studio in Belltown, one lamp, one window facing a brick wall. I set my laptop on the kitchen counter, poured a glass of water I didn't drink, and opened the account.

The first thing I did was breathe. Then I opened Venmo.

There were pages of transfers. Pages. All to the same handle. *@hadley-g.* Five thousand dollars. Five thousand. Five thousand. Three thousand. Five thousand. Every one of them tagged with something clean and boring. *Contractor deposit. Materials fee. Tile order. Cabinet reimbursement.*

We hadn't ordered new tile. I designed the bathroom myself. I knew every invoice.

I opened my notebook and started sketching. A facade I'd been drafting for a client in Ballard. Just the window rhythm. Just the proportions. Anything to keep my hand moving so it didn't shake.

Six months. Thirty thousand dollars.

I took a screenshot of each transfer. I labeled the folder in three places, in three different clouds — one of them Mara's — because I could already hear her voice in my head telling me redundancy was survival. I did it slowly. One at a time. I did not skim. I looked at every date. Every amount. Every fake little caption he thought was clever.

March 14. That was the weekend he told me he was in Portland for a bachelor party. I remember because I stayed home and painted the guest bathroom. Five thousand dollars, that Sunday. *Materials.*

May 2. My birthday week. He gave me a card and a plant. Three thousand dollars to her, four days before. *Contractor deposit.*

I drew another window. Then a doorframe. Then a whole elevation I didn't need.

Around four in the morning I moved to the Photos tab. That was harder.

I knew before I opened it. I knew because his phone always synced automatically and he never once thought about it, the same way he never thought about anything he did. I clicked in anyway. I wanted to see it. I wanted to know exactly what I was working with.

The first photo was Hadley at my kitchen island. My kitchen. The one I'd picked the counters for on a Tuesday in February, standing in a showroom for two hours because I wanted the veining to run a specific direction. She was leaning against it, holding a coffee mug I recognized. My mug. The blue ceramic one Eleanor gave me when I graduated.

She was wearing my bathrobe.

The white waffle robe I bought myself as a housewarming gift the day I closed on the condo. It was too big on her. She had it belted loose, and she was smiling at the camera like she'd smiled at me a hundred times across dinner tables, saying *oh my god Wren, your place is goals.*

The timestamp said 2:47 p.m. on a Wednesday. I checked my calendar for that Wednesday. Client meeting in Bellevue. I remembered the meeting because the client was late and I killed forty minutes in the lobby sketching a stairwell.

I did not close the laptop.

I opened the next photo. Same day, a few minutes later. She'd moved to the living room. She was on my couch, legs tucked up, still in the robe. Behind her, on the wall, was the framed print I'd bought at the Pike Place market three summers ago. A little watercolor of the Sound. I remember Dawson said it was cute in a tone that meant he thought it was cheap.

There were fourteen photos in total. Different days. Different outfits. One of them, she was standing in the doorway of my office — the office, before he tore it apart — running her hand along Eleanor's desk. Just resting her fingers on the wood, casual, the way you touch something you're already planning to own.

I saved each one. Three folders. Time-stamped. Labeled.

I didn't call anyone. I didn't text Dawson. I didn't type out anything I was going to regret. I just sat there in the small kitchen with the brick-wall window and the lamp and the cold water I hadn't touched, and I looked at those photos one by one, and I named the folder.

*Evidence — Phase One.*

Then I closed the laptop.

I picked up my notebook. I turned to a clean page. I wrote three things.

One: he does not know I know.

Two: she does not know I know.

Three: keep it that way.

I underlined the third one twice. Then I got up, walked to the window, and watched the brick until the sky behind it started to gray. When my phone buzzed at six a.m., it was a text from Dawson.

*morning babe. have you thought about it? mom's excited to celebrate today 💍*

I read it. I set the phone face down. I finished my coffee first.

Then I texted back: *Come by the condo at eleven. Bring your mom. I want to do this properly.*

He replied within thirty seconds. A heart emoji. A champagne bottle. A ring.

I put the phone back down and picked up the pen.
