Chapter 3

The Instagram screenshot came through at seven in the morning.

I was already awake. I'd been awake since five, sitting at the counter with my laptop open and my third cup of coffee going cold. The iCloud sync had finished overnight. Two hundred and forty-three photos. Eighty-six text threads. Months of Venmo transfers I'd already catalogued and labeled and backed up in three separate places.

But this one was different.

It was a story post. Close friends only. Hadley's face filled the frame, that practiced influencer angle where the chin tilts just right and the eyes go wide. She was holding up her phone screen — her banking app, balance visible — and the caption sat across the bottom in looping white text.

*Just got my monthly little allowance from a friend who appreciates me 😘 $5,000 for being me.*

The timestamp said March 9. I checked my calendar. March 9 was the Saturday Dawson told me he had to work late on a pitch deck. I remembered because I'd made dinner and eaten it alone, and when he came home at eleven he smelled like her perfume but told me it was from the Uber.

I took the screenshot. I labeled it. I printed it on the heavy cardstock Mara told me to buy because flimsy paper doesn't hold up in a courtroom. I slid it into the manila envelope that already held thirty pages of Venmo transfers, timestamps, and metadata logs.

Then I texted Mara.

*Got the final piece. Can you draft the document tonight?*

She replied in under a minute. *Already started. Meet me at my office at 8.*

I closed the laptop. I stood up. I walked to the window and looked at the brick wall outside and the gray Seattle sky behind it, and I let myself feel it. Not the anger. Not yet. Just the cold, clear certainty that I was about to burn every bridge I'd ever built with these people, and I was going to do it on purpose.

At eight I was sitting across from Mara in her office on the fourteenth floor of a building in Pioneer Square. She had the document printed and bound, two copies, each one thick enough to look important. She slid one across the desk.

"Property Abandonment and Liability Assumption Agreement," I read aloud.

"Correct." Mara leaned back in her chair, pen tapping against her notepad. "The signee assumes full personal responsibility for all outstanding renovation debts, contractor liens, and financial obligations attached to the property. Listed value: two hundred thousand dollars."

"There is no two hundred thousand dollars."

"I know that. You know that. Dawson doesn't know that." She tapped the page. "This document is designed to do one thing: scare him into showing you exactly who he is. It won't hold up in court. It doesn't need to. By the time he figures that out, you'll have everything you actually need."

I flipped through the pages. Dense legal language. Clauses about indemnification and liability transfer and financial recourse. It looked real. It looked expensive. It looked like the kind of thing a man who'd never read a contract in his life would sign without asking questions.

"What if he doesn't sign?"

"He will." Mara's voice was flat, certain. "Men like Dawson always do. They see the prize. They don't see the trap."

I looked at her. "And the real lawsuit?"

"Already drafted. Property damage. Financial misappropriation. Breach of fiduciary duty. Thirty thousand in documented transfers, plus the appraised value of your grandmother's desk and the custom office build-out. Raymond Holt finished the appraisal yesterday. Fifteen thousand, conservatively." She slid another folder across the desk. "This is what we'll actually file. Quietly. While they're busy panicking over the fake debt."

I opened the folder. The first page was a photograph of Eleanor's desk, the broken leg, the gouged surface. The second page was Raymond's report, every detail catalogued in precise, unforgiving language. *Antique writing desk, circa 1952. Irreplaceable sentimental and historical value. Destroyed due to negligence and willful disregard.*

I closed the folder. I looked at Mara. "When do we do this?"

"Tomorrow. Eleven a.m. Your condo. Bring the document, bring a witness, and bring your best poker face." She paused. "Wren. Once you do this, there's no walking it back. You understand that?"

"I understand."

She studied me for a long moment. Then she nodded. "Good. Let's bury him."

I left her office at nine. I drove back to the Airbnb. I sat at the counter and opened my phone and typed out a message to Dawson.

*I'm ready to talk about the transfer. Let's do it properly. Tomorrow, eleven a.m. at the condo. I'm bringing a property consultant to make it official.*

I watched the three dots appear. Then his reply.

*YES. this is amazing babe. I'll bring my mom. she's going to be so happy. love you ❤️*

I set the phone down. I opened my sketchbook to a blank page. I drew the condo's floor plan from memory. Every room. Every wall. Every corner I'd designed and paid for and built with my own hands.

Then I picked up a red pen. And I crossed out every single room Dawson thought would be his.
