Chapter 1

I parked my truck at the edge of the lot and sat for a moment, staring at the skeletal frame rising against the Seattle skyline. Our house. The one Reed and I had spent two years planning. The one I'd drawn up myself, every line on those blueprints a love letter written in steel and concrete.

I grabbed my hard hat and clipboard. The morning air smelled like sawdust and wet earth. Construction crews moved around the site, their voices echoing off the exposed beams. I waved to a few familiar faces as I walked toward the main structure.

This was supposed to be a quick check. Just making sure the structural elements matched my specifications before we moved to the next phase. I did this kind of inspection in my sleep.

But the moment I stepped inside the frame, something felt wrong.

I ran my hand along one of the vertical steel columns. The surface texture was off. Too smooth. I pulled out my inspection gauge and checked the grade stamp.

My stomach dropped.

These weren't the reinforcements I'd specified. Not even close. Where I'd called for high-grade structural steel rated for seismic load, someone had installed cheaper alternatives. The kind you'd use for a garden shed, not a two-story home in an earthquake zone.

I moved faster now, checking beam after beam. Every single one was wrong. Systematically, deliberately wrong.

I found the site supervisor in the temporary office, a trailer parked near the street. He looked up from his coffee, surprised to see me.

"Morning, Ms. Hansen. Didn't know you were coming by today."

"I need to see the procurement records," I said. "For the structural steel."

He blinked. "Uh, sure. Give me a second."

He pulled a binder from the filing cabinet and handed it over. I flipped through the pages, my hands steady even as my heart hammered against my ribs. There it was. Material substitution authorization. Approved and signed.

By Reed.

I stared at his signature. The same signature I'd seen on birthday cards and Post-it notes stuck to my bathroom mirror. The same signature that was supposed to go on our marriage certificate in three weeks.

"Ms. Hansen? You okay?"

I didn't answer. I kept flipping. There had to be more. There had to be a reason, some explanation that made sense.

Then I found the wire transfer records.

Cost savings from material substitutions: $47,000. Routed to an account in the name of Ariyah Ford. Payment memo: "Hamptons property—final installment."

I pulled out my phone and searched the property records. It took thirty seconds to find it. A luxury waterfront villa in the Hamptons. Two million dollars. Deed holder: Ariyah Ford.

Ariyah. His assistant. The one with the wide eyes and the breathless laugh who always said "Reed is just so brilliant" in meetings where I'd done half the work.

I sat down in the folding chair by the desk. The supervisor hovered nearby, uncomfortable.

"Can I get you some water or—"

"Leave," I said quietly.

He left.

I sat there with the binder open on my lap. The numbers didn't lie. The signatures didn't lie. Reed had stolen money from the house we were supposed to raise our children in and used it to buy a villa for another woman. And he'd done it by cutting the same corners that killed my grandmother.

The same corners.

I thought about Grandma Hansen. The way the building had just… folded. The way the investigators had found substandard materials, forged inspections, contractors who'd pocketed the savings and walked away. I thought about the promise I'd made at her funeral. That I would never let it happen again. That every structure I touched would be safe.

And Reed knew that. He knew all of it.

I called him.

He picked up on the third ring. "Hey babe, what's up? I'm in a meeting."

"Come to the site," I said. "Now."

"Can it wait? We're in the middle of—"

"Now, Reed."

He showed up twenty minutes later, still wearing his suit from whatever meeting I'd interrupted. I watched from the trailer window as he parked his Tesla. Ariyah was in the passenger seat. Of course she was.

He walked into the trailer with that easy confidence he always wore like cologne. "What's going on? The crew said you looked upset."

I slid the binder across the desk.

He glanced at it. His expression didn't change. "Okay?"

"You substituted the materials," I said. "The structural steel. You authorized cheaper grades and pocketed the difference."

"Cecelia—"

"Forty-seven thousand dollars. Wired to Ariyah Ford. For a villa in the Hamptons."

He sighed. Like I was being tedious. Like I was a client asking too many questions.

"Look, I can explain—"

"Explain what?" My voice was still calm. Still quiet. "Explain how you stole from our home to buy another woman a house? Explain how you used the same shortcuts that killed my grandmother?"

"That's not fair," he said. "This is completely different. The materials are fine. They meet code. You're overreacting."

"Overreacting."

"Yes." He crossed his arms. "And honestly, Cecelia, maybe if you'd been a little more supportive instead of always questioning everything I do, I wouldn't have needed—"

"Needed what? Needed her?"

He didn't answer. He didn't have to.

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd loved since I was seven years old. The man I'd given twenty-three years to. And I realized I didn't recognize him at all.

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger. It caught the light for a moment, that stupid perfect diamond he'd been so proud of.

Then I walked outside and threw it into the concrete mixer.

The crew stopped working. Reed followed me out, staring.

"What the hell are you doing?"

I turned to face him. "Consider the wedding canceled."

I walked to my truck. I didn't look back. I didn't cry. I just drove.

Behind me, Reed stood next to the mixer, Ariyah climbing out of the car to join him. I saw him shake his head in my rearview mirror. Saw him smile.

He thought I'd be back.

That night, I sat at my desk with Grandma's book of poetry open in front of me. The apartment was silent. My phone stayed dark. No one called. I didn't expect them to.

I read one poem. The one about foundations. The one about what you build on.

Then I closed the book and sat in the quiet, my thumb running along the edge of my thumbnail.

I'd already made my decision.
