Three days went by. I didn't call. I didn't text. I didn't explain myself to anyone.

I went to work. I came home. I ate toast standing at the kitchen counter and read Grandma's poetry book before bed. The apartment stayed quiet in a way I'd never noticed before—not empty, just mine.

On the fourth morning, my phone buzzed with a message from Reed.

*When you're done being dramatic, we should talk. The caterer needs final numbers.*

I stared at it for a long moment. Then I set the phone face-down on the table and finished my coffee.

He sent another text that afternoon. Then another that evening. I didn't open them. By the second day of silence, the tone shifted. Less confident. More frequent.

On the sixth day, a delivery arrived. Two dozen white roses in a crystal vase with a card that said, *Let's not throw away twenty-three years over a misunderstanding. —R*

I looked at the arrangement. It was expensive. Tasteful. Exactly the kind of thing Reed knew how to deploy.

I called the florist and had them pick it up within the hour. I wrote a note on the back of Reed's card in my neatest handwriting: *Wrong address.* Then I had the whole thing couriered back to his office.

I didn't feel triumphant. I didn't feel anything except certain.

That evening, Mrs. Sullivan showed up at my door.

She stood in the hallway holding a bouquet of pale pink peonies, her expression warm and careful in the way of someone who'd rehearsed this conversation multiple times.

"Cecelia, sweetheart. May I come in?"

I stepped aside. She walked past me into the living room, her heels clicking softly on the hardwood. I closed the door and followed.

She set the flowers on the coffee table and turned to face me with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I wanted to check on you. Reed said you've been… processing."

"Processing," I repeated.

"Every couple has rough patches," she said gently. "Especially right before a wedding. The pressure, the logistics—it can bring out the worst in people. But that doesn't mean you throw away everything you've built."

I didn't sit. Neither did she.

"Would you like some tea?" I asked.

She blinked, surprised by the shift. "That would be lovely."

I went to the kitchen and put the kettle on. She followed me, lingering in the doorway.

"Reed made a mistake," she said quietly. "I'm not excusing it. But he's young. He's under a lot of stress with the business. And that girl—" She waved a hand dismissively. "She won't last. You know that. You're the one he's loved his whole life."

I poured the hot water over the tea bags. Chamomile for her. Nothing for me.

"Mrs. Sullivan," I said, handing her the cup. "I appreciate you coming. I really do. But I will not be marrying your son."

She set the tea down untouched. Her face shifted—something harder beneath the warmth now.

"Cecelia, think about what you're doing. Think about the families. The plans. The life you've built together. You can't just walk away from twenty-three years."

"I'm not walking away from twenty-three years," I said. "I'm walking away from a man who stole from the house we were supposed to raise our children in so he could buy another woman a villa."

She flinched. "It's not that simple."

"It is exactly that simple."

We stood there in the quiet. She looked at me like she was seeing someone she didn't recognize.

Finally, she picked up her purse. "I hope you'll reconsider."

"I won't."

She left the peonies on the table. I poured them down the garbage chute an hour later.

The next morning, my mother called. She'd been calling every day since the breakup, always opening with the weather.

"It's supposed to rain this afternoon," she said. "You should bring an umbrella."

"I will."

"Cecelia." Her voice softened. "We need to talk about Reed."

"No, we don't."

"Sweetheart, I know you're hurt. But you have to think about this rationally. Marriage is work. It's compromise. Your grandmother—"

"Don't."

"—would have wanted you to fight for this. To fight for your family."

My hand tightened around the phone. I thought about Grandma Hansen. Not the version my mother had constructed in her head—the soft, forgiving saint who wanted peace at any cost. I thought about the real woman. The one who'd taught me that integrity wasn't negotiable. The one who'd died because someone decided profit mattered more than safety.

"Grandma would have wanted me to know the difference," I said quietly, "between a foundation worth standing on and one that's going to collapse."

I hung up. Gently. Carefully.

My mother didn't call the next morning.

I sat at my desk that night with Grandma's book open in front of me. My thumb ran along the edge of my thumbnail. Outside, the rain she'd predicted drummed against the window.

I'd already made my decision. The rest of the world just hadn't caught up yet.
