Chapter 1

I invited my classmates over to my place for my birthday and honestly, I just wanted a fun, chill day. But the moment one of them saw our family photo hanging in the hallway, her entire vibe changed.

She stared at it like she saw a ghost, then suddenly turned to me and my mom with this smug look and said, "You two should bow to me."

I just blinked, trying to process what I’d heard. For a second, I genuinely thought she had gone crazy.

I let out a small laugh, trying to keep things light. "Are you okay? Maybe take a moment and calm down."

But that just made her snap. She jabbed her finger right at my face and said, "There’s a difference between legitimate and illegitimate children, you know. I told you to bow as a kindness. I’m my father’s real daughter. You and your mom are just the mistress and the illegitimate child."

Then she added, "If you don’t learn how to please me, I’ll ship you off to some foreign country. They will like your body."

My mom and I stared at each other, completely thrown. Like... what? My dad? An illegitimate child? And now she was standing in my house talking down to us? The craziest part? What kind of messed-up drama was this?

——

"Oh my god, this is your place? It’s like a movie set or something!"

"Seriously, thank god for Yesenia’s birthday. Or, we'd never get to see a house like this."

"You’ve been so low-key all this time. Didn’t expect you to be the richest one at our college. What do you think, Queenie? Think Yesenia is stealing your crown?"

Queenie didn’t look thrilled. After a weird pause, she gave this fake smile and said, "No wonder Yesenia never hangs out with us. Guess she’s too busy 'making money' all over the place."

That last part was thick with sarcasm. I froze for a second, completely caught off guard.

Thankfully, Freya, who always had my back, rolled her eyes. "Seriously, Queenie? That’s low, even for you. Just because someone’s got money doesn’t mean they’re shady. Don’t act like you’re the only one allowed to be rich around here."

Queenie completely ignored her, came over to me and said with this smug little smirk, "So, Yesenia... this manor must’ve cost a fortune to rent. All this for a birthday? You’re not gonna ask us to help cover the bill later, are you?"

The room went dead quiet. Everyone looked around, clearly uncomfortable. I felt my jaw clench, but I still smiled and said, "Relax. The manor is not rented. My mom bought it. Every penny..."

Before I could even finish what I was saying, Queenie jumped in again, more aggressive than ever. "Oh, so it’s your mom who’s out there making all the money, not you? Shouldn’t you be helping her instead of just living off her?"

Then she glanced at Freya with that smug look of hers. "And by the way, Freya, I said 'make money.' I never said anything shady. You’re the one twisting my words with your own dirty thoughts."

The whole room got awkward. Everyone went quiet, their smiles fading fast. You could practically feel the tension thick in the air.

Scarlett, bless her, tried to ease the vibe with an awkward laugh. She pointed to the photo hanging on the wall and said way too loudly, "Hey, is this your family portrait? Wow, your parents are seriously good-looking, Yesenia!"

Everyone turned to look, clearly grateful for a change of topic. But Queenie? Nope. She marched right over, shoved past people and grabbed the frame out of Scarlett’s hands.

She looked at it for like two seconds, then her whole expression twisted. Without a word, she chucked the photo down at my feet.

"Is this your mom and dad?" she snapped.

I froze for a second, then finally snapped. "Queenie, if you’re gonna act crazy, just leave. Today’s my birthday and honestly, I’m already regretting letting you through the door. You’ve been passive-aggressive all day and now you’re straight-up disrespecting my family in my house. What’s your problem?"

She looked even more pissed, like how dare I stand up to her. "You? A bastard child? You think you have the right to talk to me like that? Do you even know the difference between a legitimate daughter and someone like you? There’s a hierarchy, you know."

I stared at her, totally stunned. I didn’t even know what to say. Like… what the hell was she talking about? My parents were legally married. There was nothing ‘illegitimate’ about me.

I literally started laughing, not because any of it was funny, but because the whole situation was just so ridiculous. Like, where was this energy coming from?
