Chapter 2

When Queenie first said it, I honestly thought I misheard. She couldn’t be serious… right?

But when I just stood there, not saying anything, she took it as her cue to go full-on crazy. "I’m telling you, that man in the photo? That’s my dad. My parents are legally married. So if you’re not a bastard, what are you supposed to be?"

She flipped her hair back like she was in some soap opera. "I always thought you looked kinda familiar. Now I know why. You’re the little lovechild my dad had while cheating."

I clenched my jaw so hard my teeth hurt. I wanted to throw her out of the house right then and there, but I took a deep breath, trying to keep it together.

"Queenie, cut the crap. I don’t know what kind of drama you’re on about, but my parents are married, legally married. So stop talking nonsense and apologize. Now," I said.

But she just scoffed and interrupted me like I was a joke. "What are you gonna do? Cry? A filthy little side-product dares to raise her voice at me? Please. Everything I say has receipts, I don’t just make stuff up."

Then she whipped out her phone and started scrolling like a woman on a mission.

"Here. This is a photo of my birth certificate. That’s me as a newborn with my parents. And this one—" she shoved the screen in my face, "this is our household registration. Take a good look. Isn’t the man here your father? Salvatore Santiago, isn’t that his name?"

I froze. The man in the picture… he looked exactly like my dad. Same face. Same hair. Same quiet kind of smile.

For a second, I hoped, maybe he had a twin? A long-lost cousin? But no. My dad was an only child. No siblings, no cousins. Just him.

Then I saw the signature. It was the same one I had watched him scribble on every school form. The same full name. The same handwriting.

And that was when it hit me. Queenie was telling the truth. She really was his daughter.

Which meant… he cheated. On my mom. And Queenie was the result.

I felt like the floor had been ripped out from under me. This couldn’t be real.

My dad, the quiet, obedient man who followed my mom’s every word? The guy who never even argued back when she yelled at him over burnt toast? That same man was out there having secret kids?

I wanted to scream. Or cry. Or throw something. I felt sick. And Queenie was absolutely loving it. "Well? Nothing to say now? Come on, speak up! The man on my birth certificate, isn’t that your precious dad?"

She leaned in closer, smiling like the devil. "You’ve been acting like some princess all day. But tell me, why do you think your dad is never home? Go ahead. Think real hard."

"And why don't you even have the same last name as your dad?" Queenie snapped, that smug smile creeping back onto her face.

"All you’ve got is your slut mom’s last name, Zielinski. That’s because you don’t deserve his name. You're nothing but a bastard." Her words felt like a punch in the gut. Sharp, nasty and way too personal.

"I didn’t come here just for cake," she went on, practically sneering. "I’ve been suspecting for a while that my dad was sneaking around. I followed him a bunch of times, but I could never catch him near here. Then you gave me your address at school, so I came. Figured I’d try my luck. And look at that, I found your little love nest."

She glanced around at the others like she was proud of herself, like this was her moment.

"So, girls," she said, raising her voice just enough, "the truth is out. Miss Perfect Yesenia? The one with the good grades and the pretty smile? She’s not some inspirational story. She’s just the daughter of a homewrecker. A damn mistake."

For a second, nobody said a word. But then the whispers started.

"Wait, what? Yesenia's mom was a mistress?"

"That explains the house. No way she could afford this on her own."

"Ew… aren’t Queenie and Yesenia like the same age? Her mom was hooking up with Queenie’s dad while his wife was pregnant?"

"Disgusting. I’m gonna keep my boyfriend far away from her, just in case."

I stood there, frozen. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. It felt like everything I had ever worked for, everything I was proud of, was crashing down around me.

And just then, like some horrible twist of fate, my mom’s voice floated in from the hallway. "What’s going on in there? I thought I heard something fall, is everyone okay?"

She stood at the door, still smiling, completely unaware of what had just happened. And all I could do was stare at her, heart pounding, while the room full of classmates stared at me like they didn’t recognize me anymore.
