Chapter 2

Adrian’s devotion didn't just resume after that night at the hospital; it surged into something breathless and consuming.

Three days after the pregnancy test, he presented her with a leather binder over breakfast. Inside was the deed to an eight-million-dollar oceanfront estate in Carmel. He hadn't even toured it. He had simply outbid three developers over the phone while Sophie was still asleep, demanding the keys by noon so she could "breathe sea air whenever she felt morning sickness."

By Saturday, the grand gestures reached their peak.

He had reserved the private terrace at Le Petit Châtelet for twenty of their closest friends. Crystal chandeliers hung from the wrought-iron pergola, casting warm light across tables laden with white peonies and vintage champagne.

Clara raised her glass from across the linen tablecloth. "To the luckiest woman in the city. Adrian hasn't looked at his phone once tonight."

Sophie laughed, her cheeks flushed with warmth. For the first time in weeks, the tight knot in her chest had loosened. She leaned back against the plush cushions, resting a protective palm over her lower abdomen.

Adrian stood, tapping the side of his glass with a silver knife.

The terrace fell quiet. Adrian wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, his dark hair catching the amber glow of the terrace lamps. He looked every inch the self-made titan, yet when his gaze landed on Sophie, his sharp features softened into profound adoration.

"Five years ago, Sophie married a man who had more debts than prospects," Adrian began, his voice rich and steady. "She believed in me when no bank would take my call. She stood by me in empty offices and cold winters."

He walked around the table, stopping directly in front of her chair.

Sophie looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat.

Adrian sank gracefully onto one knee.

A collective gasp rippled through the guests. Clara covered her mouth with both hands.

Adrian reached into his breast pocket and produced a black velvet box. He snapped it open. Inside rested a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring, easily twice the size of the simple band she wore on her finger. It caught the chandelier light, throwing brilliant fractures of white fire across the table.

"I promised you the world back then, Sophie," he said, taking her left hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and reverent. "Now, carrying our future, you deserve more than old promises. If I had to choose again, I'd still choose you."

Tears spilled over Sophie’s lashes, hot and immediate.

"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice breaking.

"Say yes to the next fifty years," he murmured, his dark eyes fixed entirely on hers.

"Yes," she choked out. "Of course yes."

Applause erupted around them. Adrian slid the heavy platinum band onto her ring finger, replacing the old diamond. He stood and pulled her up into his arms, burying his face against her hair while their friends cheered.

Pressed against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart, Sophie let the last remnants of her dread wash away. The cold detachment she thought she had seen in his office, the chilling tone in Lily’s hospital room—it was all grief, stress, and exhaustion playing tricks on her mind.

Adrian loved her. He was building an empire just to lay it at her feet.

The euphoria carried Sophie through the night, but the following morning brought a nagging errand she couldn't ignore.

Lily’s downtown loft sat empty, the rent due in two weeks. Sophie wanted to pick up a few of her sister's favorite silk loungewear sets and bring them to the rehabilitation clinic, hoping familiar scents might spark some brain activity.

She drove downtown and took the elevator to the fourth floor. When she reached Lily’s apartment, she found the heavy wooden door already propped open with a brick.

Sophie frowned, stepping into the entryway. "Lily?"

The apartment was hollow with activity. Cardboard boxes lined the hardwood hallway, sealed with thick brown packing tape.

Near the kitchen island stood Cynthia, Adrian’s executive assistant. She was wearing rubber gloves, systematically placing items into an open plastic tote.

"Cynthia?" Sophie called out.

The assistant startled, dropping a small brass candleholder into the bin with a loud clatter. She spun around, her face instantly draining of color. "Mrs. Vance. I... what are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," Sophie said, stepping into the living room. She looked around at the stripped walls and empty bookshelves. "Why are you packing Lily’s things?"

"Mr. Vance asked me to handle the apartment," Cynthia said carefully, avoiding direct eye contact. "To clear the lease so you wouldn't have to worry about the logistics."

Sophie’s eyes drifted to the open container on the island.

Resting on top of a stack of Lily’s sketchbooks was a cracked, rose-gold iPhone.

Sophie froze.

It was Lily’s second phone—the prepaid burner she had kept hidden at the bottom of her vanity. The phone she used solely to text that married lover. Sophie had tried searching for it the night of the accident, desperate to identify the man who had torn her sister's life apart, but she hadn't been able to find it in the chaos.

Sophie reached out to grab it. "Where was this?"

Before her fingertips could touch the glass, a large, well-manicured hand smoothly intercepted her wrist.

Sophie jumped.

Adrian stepped out from Lily’s bedroom. He had his suit jacket off, his crisp white sleeves rolled neatly to his elbows. He didn't look startled or guilty; his expression was completely serene.

With his other hand, he picked up the rose-gold phone and dropped it into his trouser pocket.

"Adrian?" Sophie pulled her wrist back, her pulse spiking. "Why do you have Lily’s private phone? Why are you clearing out her apartment without telling me?"

"Cynthia, take those three boxes down to the car," Adrian commanded softly, not taking his eyes off Sophie.

"Yes, Mr. Vance." Cynthia quickly hauled the taped boxes toward the door, slipping out and pulling it shut behind her.

The apartment fell dead silent.

"Adrian, answer me," Sophie demanded, her voice rising with an edge of panic. "That phone has the messages. The man she was seeing—the one who caused the fight that night—his number is on there! I need to know who he is. I need to know why—"

"Sophie."

Adrian took a single step toward her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't sound angry. His tone was drenched in pure, unadulterated tenderness.

He reached out and framed her face with his hands, his long fingers cupping her cheeks with practiced warmth.

"Look at me," he whispered gently.

Sophie struggled to breathe, looking into his dark, steady eyes. "Adrian, she’s in a coma because of that man. We can’t just pack her life away into boxes and pretend—"

"You are four weeks pregnant," he interrupted, stroking her cheekbones with his thumbs. "Do you have any idea what severe emotional distress does to an early-stage pregnancy? Do you remember the doctor telling us about hormone spikes and uterine contractions?"

"I’m fine, I just—"

"You are not fine," he chided softly, his voice dripping with gentle authority. "You're obsessing over a tragedy that you cannot change. Hunting down some nameless coward won't wake Lily up. It will only poison your mind and put our baby at risk."

"She’s my sister," Sophie pleaded, tears stinging her eyes. "I can't just abandon her."

"You aren't abandoning her. I am taking care of her," Adrian said. His voice was silky, absolute, leaving no room for debate. "I have transferred Lily’s care to the private neurological wing at St. Jude's. I paid the annual retainer. I am handling the lease, the bills, and every piece of her estate."

He leaned in, his lips gently brushing her forehead in a lingering, possessive kiss.

"From this moment on, Sophie, you are forbidden from touching anything related to Lily's accident. You will not dig into her personal life. You will not handle her belongings. You will not stress yourself over things that belong in the past."

He pulled back slightly, smiling down at her with infinite sweetness.

"All you have to do is stay home, eat well, and let me protect you. That is your only job."

Sophie stared at him, paralyzed.

Every word he said sounded like pure devotion. Any outsider listening would think he was the most protective, loving husband in the world. But standing there in the empty, stripped apartment, feeling his hands firmly bracketing her head, the words didn't feel like love.

They felt like iron bars snapping into place.

"Now," Adrian said brightly, dropping his hands and taking her by the elbow. "Let's get you home. The sea air in Carmel will do wonders for your color."

An hour later, Sophie stood alone in the master bathroom of their penthouse.

The room was vast, lined with polished Italian marble and illuminated by recessed vanity lights. The silence of the apartment felt heavy, almost suffocating.

She looked at her reflection in the gilded mirror.

On her left hand, the new emerald-cut diamond gleamed under the halogen bulbs, cold and impossibly heavy. It dominated her finger, pristine and brilliant, an undeniable trophy of her husband's success.

Sophie slowly raised her hand to her throat, her chest heaving as she fought for a deep breath.

The lavish gifts. The surprise re-proposal in front of their friends. The Carmel villa. The sudden, thorough erasure of Lily's life.

It was all connected.

He hadn't placed her on a pedestal to worship her.

He had put her there to isolate her.

Looking at the sparkling ring, Sophie felt a cold shiver crawl up her spine. She wasn't a cherished wife standing in the light of an idyllic marriage. She was a captive perched at the top of a glittering, fragile tower—and somewhere far below, the foundations were already beginning to crack.
