Chapter 3

The scent of fresh cedar and soft wool drifted into the hallway before Sophie even crossed the threshold.

Adrian held her hand, his fingers laced snugly through hers as he pushed open the tall double doors at the end of the Carmel villa's west wing.

"Go on," he said softly, nudging her forward. "Take a look."

Sophie stepped inside, her breath catching in her throat.

Sunlight poured through the arched bay windows, illuminating a sprawling nursery bathed in warm ivory and muted cream. In the center stood a custom oval crib crafted from solid white oak, its spindles delicately carved by hand. A plush sheepskin rug covered the pale hardwood floor, surrounded by handcrafted wooden rocking horses, shelves of imported picture books, and plush Steiff animals arranged in neat, silent rows. Above the crib hung a delicate brass mobile shaped like constellations, catching the light and spinning gently in the breeze.

It wasn't a room slapped together in a few days. It was an architectural marvel of domestic perfection.

"Adrian..." Sophie turned to him, her eyes stinging with fresh tears. "How? We only found out four days ago."

He stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. His chin rested lightly on her shoulder, his chest a solid, steady anchor against her back.

"I started designing it two months ago," he whispered, his voice rich and low. "I hired an artisan team from Milan the day after our third round of treatments failed. I told them to work round the clock. I knew our child would come to us, Sophie. I never doubted you for a second."

Sophie leaned back into his embrace, her hands resting over his where they clasped against her stomach.

The knot of fear that had tightened around her ribs over the past week suddenly gave way. All the endless clinic visits, the tearful negative tests, the sterile heartbreak—it was all washed away by the quiet beauty of this room. He had believed in her body when she had completely given up on it. He had built a sanctuary for their future while she had been drowning in despair.

"Thank you," she choked out, turning her head to press a kiss to his jawline. "It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen."

"Everything for you," he murmured against her temple. "Always."

By dusk, the villa buzzed with stylists, makeup artists, and frantic assistants preparing for the evening’s double celebration.

The penthouse ballroom at the Grand Del Mar had been reserved for over two hundred guests—investors, high-society patrons, and lifelong friends. Tonight, Adrian was officially announcing their fifth anniversary alongside the news of their pregnancy.

When the styling team cleared out of the dressing suite, only Adrian remained.

He dismissed the wardrobe consultant with a brief wave of his hand and walked toward the garment rack himself. Hanging from the gilded rail was a floor-length gown of heavy emerald-green silk. The neckline was structured and daring, adorned with intricate black beadwork that shimmered like crushed obsidian under the chandelier light.

"Wear this one," Adrian said, lifting the garment bag and unzipping it with a slow, deliberate slide.

"It’s breathtaking," Sophie said, running a hand over the cool silk. "A little theatrical, maybe? For an anniversary?"

"It’s not theatrical," he answered smoothly, carrying the dress over to her. "It’s majestic. You are carrying my heir. You shouldn't blend into the background."

Sophie stepped into the gown, lifting her hair off the back of her neck as Adrian stepped behind her.

In the full-length gilded mirror, they looked like a portrait of flawless luxury. Adrian was already in his bespoke black tuxedo, his hair immaculately styled, his broad shoulders framing her smaller silhouette.

He reached down, taking the zipper pull between his thumb and forefinger.

Slowly, almost rhythmically, he pulled the metal teeth together. The dress tightened around her ribs, molding to her waist like a second skin.

His fingertips brushed the bare skin of her spine. A sudden, inexplicable chill skittered across Sophie's shoulders.

Adrian didn't step back once the zipper reached the top. Instead, he leaned down, bringing his lips directly beside her ear. His gaze remained locked on hers in the reflection, his dark brown eyes flat, vacant, and utterly stripped of tenderness.

"I want everyone to see who you really are tonight," he whispered.

The words were quiet, but the cadence was freezing—a blade slipping cleanly through silk.

Sophie’s breath stalled.

The warmth in the room vanished in an instant. She stared back at his reflection, her heart giving a violent lurch against her ribs. There was no proud affection in his face. His lips barely moved, and the lines of his jaw were so rigid they looked carved from slate.

"Adrian?" Her voice came out thin, barely audible. "What does that mean?"

In the blink of an eye, the mask slid back into place.

Adrian smiled, a dazzling, effortless curve that lit up his features. He smoothed the fabric over her shoulders with warm, affectionate hands and kissed the top of her bare shoulder.

"It means you've spent too many years hiding in the shadows of my work," he said lightly, turning her around to face him. "Tonight, you take center stage. Let's go, darling. The car is waiting."

Sophie tried to swallow, but her throat felt like sandpaper. She let him take her arm, her feet carrying her forward even as every instinct screamed that something terrible was ticking beneath the surface.

***

The sleek black town car glided through the evening mist along the coastal highway, the engine emitting only a low, muted hum.

Adrian sat in the driver's seat, both hands resting lightly on the leather steering wheel. His profile was bathed in the faint green glow of the dashboard navigation screen, sharp and unreadable.

Sophie sat beside him, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. Her knuckles were white against the emerald silk of her dress.

The silence inside the cabin felt pressurized, like the air inside an airplane cabin right before a drop in altitude.

"Adrian," she began, the word breaking the quiet with startling clarity.

He didn't look over. "Yes?"

Sophie shifted slightly toward him, her pulse drumming in her ears. "I can't stop thinking about what happened. In Lily's apartment."

Adrian's hands remained steady on the wheel. "I told you to leave that alone, Sophie."

"I know what you told me," she pressed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to hold it steady. "But finding her burner phone... seeing Cynthia pack everything into boxes like Lily was already dead... it doesn't make sense. The day of the accident, right before she ran into the street, she said something to me."

Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly, the only sign he was listening.

"She said I didn't know anything," Sophie continued, the memory flashing behind her eyelids with agonizing vividness. "She was crying so hard she could barely breathe. She told me the man she loved wasn't a stranger. She said he had been in our lives the whole time. Adrian, when you took that phone, did you look through it? Did you see who called her that night?"

Without warning, Adrian slammed his foot onto the brake pedal.

The tires shrieked violently against the slick asphalt.

Sophie gasped as the seatbelt locked with brutal force, snapping hard across her collarbone and crushing the breath from her lungs. The car jerked to an abrupt, violent halt at the shoulder of the empty road, gravel crunching loudly under the wheels.

The sudden stillness in the vehicle was deafening.

Sophie gripped the armrest, her chest heaving as she stared at him in shock. "Adrian! What are you doing?!"

Adrian didn't shout. He didn't slam the wheel.

He slowly turned his head to look at her.

In the dim light of the cabin, his eyes were pitch-black pits. There was no irritation, no defensive anger, no trace of the man who had cradled her in the nursery hours before. It was a stare of profound, terrifying emptiness—the way a predator looks at a piece of prey right before the kill.

"Do not speak about that night again," he said.

His voice was entirely devoid of inflection, flat and lethal.

"You have one role tonight, Sophie. You smile. You hold my arm. You tell our friends how happy you are." He leaned closer, his shadow falling completely over her. "Do you understand me?"

Sophie’s heart thudded wildly against her ribs, terror paralyzing her tongue. She could only nod, a small, jerking motion of her chin.

Adrian watched her for two long seconds, ensuring the fear had settled deep into her bones.

Then, he sat back.

He reached up, calmly straightening the knot of his black silk tie in the rearview mirror. He smoothed the lapels of his tuxedo, dusted an invisible speck of lint from his sleeve, and shifted the car back into drive.

Within minutes, the sprawling entrance of the Grand Del Mar came into view.

Bright halogen spotlights swept across the red carpet laid out beneath the grand portico. Dozens of photographers lined the velvet ropes, their cameras flashing in rapid, blinding succession.

Adrian pulled the car up to the valet, killed the engine, and stepped out.

He walked around the hood with easy, commanding grace. When he opened Sophie’s door, his face was radiant. He extended his hand to her, his smile broad, charismatic, and devastatingly warm—the picture of a devoted husband escorting the love of his life.

"Ready, my love?" he asked, his voice dripping with honey.

Numb, Sophie placed her trembling, ice-cold hand into his.

As his fingers closed around hers with an inescapable grip, he pulled her out into the blinding white flashes of the cameras and the roar of cheering applause.
