Chapter 1

The familiar scent of pine and mountain air still clung to my jacket as I fumbled with my apartment keys, exhaustion weighing down my limbs like lead. Three days in the Rocky Mountains had left me drained but creatively fulfilled—my camera bag heavy with what I knew were some of my best shots yet. All I wanted was to collapse into bed and process the images that had been dancing behind my eyelids during the long drive home.

The key turned with its usual stubborn resistance, and I pushed open the door to my sanctuary. But instead of the peaceful silence I craved, muffled sounds drifted from my bedroom—sounds that made my blood freeze in my veins.

Laughter. Soft, intimate whispers. The unmistakable creak of my bed frame.

My camera bag slipped from my shoulder, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud that seemed to echo through my chest. Each step toward my bedroom felt like walking through quicksand, my heart hammering against my ribs as denial warred with the growing certainty in my gut.

I pushed open the bedroom door.

The scene before me shattered something fundamental inside my chest. Rylan—my boyfriend of three years—was tangled in my sheets with Celia Morris, my friend since college. They froze like deer in headlights, but neither had the decency to look ashamed.

"Maya!" Celia's voice was breathless, but she made no move to cover herself. Instead, she sat up with an almost defiant tilt to her chin. "You're back early."

The casual tone, as if she'd been caught borrowing my sweater instead of sleeping with my boyfriend, sent rage coursing through my veins like liquid fire. Rylan scrambled for his boxers, his face cycling through surprise, guilt, and then—incredibly—annoyance.

"Maya, I can explain—" he started, but Celia cut him off with a laugh that sounded like breaking glass.

"Oh, there's more to explain than just this," she said, her hand moving to rest on her still-flat stomach with theatrical precision. "I'm pregnant, Maya. With Rylan's baby."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I gripped the doorframe to keep from swaying, my vision tunneling as the betrayal multiplied exponentially. Not just an affair—a pregnancy. Not just my boyfriend—my friend.

"How long?" The words scraped out of my throat like gravel.

Rylan finally found his voice, pulling on his shirt with jerky movements. "Maya, listen, this isn't what you think—"

"How. Long?" I repeated, each word sharp enough to cut.

Celia stretched languidly, apparently enjoying the drama. "Six months for the affair. Two months for the pregnancy." She examined her nails with studied indifference. "And since we're being honest, I think it's time we discussed compensation."

"Compensation?" The word felt foreign on my tongue.

"Ten thousand dollars," she said matter-of-factly, as if discussing the weather. "To keep this quiet. Your reputation as the sweet, trusting photographer would be ruined if people knew how spectacularly you've been played."

The calculated cruelty of it stole my breath. This wasn't a moment of weakness or passion—this was orchestrated betrayal with a price tag attached.

Rylan shot Celia a warning look, but she ignored him, her eyes fixed on me with predatory intensity. "Think about it, Maya. Your clients, your gallery connections—what would they think if they knew you couldn't even see what was happening in your own bed?"

Something inside me snapped. The fog of shock cleared, replaced by a clarity so sharp it felt like stepping into arctic air. I straightened, my photographer's eye automatically cataloging the scene: Rylan's guilty fidgeting, Celia's smug satisfaction, the rumpled sheets I'd bought with my own money, in the apartment I paid for.

"Get out," I said quietly.

Rylan stepped forward, his expression shifting to the wounded puppy look that had worked on me countless times before. "Maya, baby, you're overreacting. This is exactly why this happened—you're always so dramatic, so focused on your work that you never see what's right in front of you. You drove me to this with your neglect."

The gaslighting was so blatant, so perfectly executed, that I almost laughed. How many times had he used my dedication to my craft against me? How many times had I apologized for pursuing my passion while he lived off the proceeds?

"You're right," I said, and his face brightened with hope. "I didn't see what was right in front of me. I didn't see that I was dating a parasite."

His expression darkened. "You'll never find anyone better than me, Maya. You're too naive, too gullible. Who else is going to put up with your obsession with those stupid mountains?"

I walked to my closet and began pulling out his clothes—clothes I'd bought him, I realized with sickening clarity. "You have ten minutes to get your things and leave. Both of you."

"Maya, be reasonable—" Rylan started, but I cut him off.

"Ten minutes, or I call the police." My voice was steady as granite, surprising even myself. "And Celia? Keep your hush money. The truth has a way of coming out anyway."
