Chapter 2

Three days of silence stretched between me and the world like a protective cocoon. I'd turned off my phone, ignored the persistent knocking at my door, and buried myself in developing the mountain photographs from my last shoot. The darkroom's red glow had become my sanctuary, where the only betrayals were overexposed negatives and the only lies were in poorly timed shots.

But even sanctuaries couldn't shelter me forever. My coffee supply had dwindled to nothing, and the gallery opening next week demanded my attention whether my heart was ready or not.

The morning air bit at my cheeks as I walked toward Grind Coffee, the little shop three blocks from my studio that had become my second home over the years. The familiar bell chimed as I pushed through the door, and I breathed in the rich aroma of freshly ground beans—the first thing that had smelled like comfort since I'd walked into my bedroom three days ago.

"Maya?"

The voice stopped me cold. Deep, warm, with just a hint of uncertainty that made my chest flutter in a way I hadn't felt since high school. I turned slowly, afraid I was hallucinating from too little sleep and too much heartbreak.

August Warren stood near the window table, a laptop open in front of him and a half-empty coffee cup in his hand. He looked exactly like the boy I'd sat next to in AP Literature, but filled out in all the right places—broader shoulders, stronger jaw, eyes that held the same gentle intelligence I'd fallen for at seventeen.

"August." His name felt strange on my tongue after so many years. "I... wow. Hi."

He closed his laptop with careful precision, the same methodical way he used to organize his notes before class. "You look..." His eyes swept over me, and I suddenly became aware of my rumpled sweater and the dark circles I hadn't bothered to conceal. "You look like you've been through something."

Trust August to see straight through any facade. It had been his superpower in high school—reading between the lines of everyone's carefully constructed personas.

"Coffee first," I said, gesturing toward the counter. "Then we can catch up on the last decade of disasters."

His laugh was exactly as I remembered—quiet, genuine, with just enough warmth to make my knees wobble. "I'll grab us a table. Large coffee, two sugars, splash of cream?"

The fact that he remembered my coffee order from our study sessions fifteen years ago sent something electric through my chest. "You have a terrifying memory."

"Only for things that matter."

The words hung between us as I ordered, my hands trembling slightly as I counted out change. When I returned to his table, August had moved his laptop aside and was watching me with the same focused attention he'd once reserved for Shakespearean sonnets.

"So," he said as I settled into the chair across from him, "photography. I've been following your work."

Heat flooded my cheeks. "You have?"

"Your mountain series is incredible. There's this one shot of sunrise over the Rockies that I..." He paused, running his fingers through his hair in a gesture that transported me straight back to senior year. "I may have used it as my phone wallpaper for the past six months."

The confession hit me like a physical touch. All those years of wondering if he'd ever thought about me, and he'd been carrying my work in his pocket.

"What about you?" I asked, desperate to shift focus from the warmth spreading through my chest. "Still planning to change the world through architecture?"

"One sustainable building at a time." His smile was self-deprecating. "Though my mother seems more interested in my personal architecture these days. She's been setting me up on blind dates with the determination of a military strategist."

I nearly choked on my coffee. "Blind dates?"

"Three this month alone. Last week she ambushed me with the daughter of her book club president. Sweet girl, but she spent the entire dinner explaining why pineapple belongs on pizza."

"The horror," I said, and for the first time in days, I felt something like laughter bubbling up.

"What about you? Please tell me you're not facing the parental matchmaking brigade too."

The laughter died in my throat. "Actually, yes. My parents have been sending me profiles like I'm browsing a catalog. 'This one's a doctor, Maya. This one owns three restaurants.' As if professional success automatically equals relationship compatibility."

August leaned forward, his expression growing serious. "Are you... seeing anyone?"

The question hung in the air like a loaded gun. I could lie, preserve what was left of my dignity, pretend the last three years hadn't been a masterclass in self-deception. Instead, I found myself telling him everything—Rylan's betrayal, Celia's pregnancy, the hush money demand that had finally opened my eyes to how thoroughly I'd been played.

August listened without interruption, his jaw tightening with each revelation. When I finished, he was quiet for a long moment, his fingers drumming against his coffee cup in a rhythm I recognized from our shared desk.

"I have an idea," he said finally, his eyes meeting mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. "What if we solved both our problems at once?"

"What do you mean?"

"Fake dating." The words came out in a rush, as if he'd been building up courage to say them. "Think about it—your parents stop sending you doctor profiles, my mother stops ambushing me with book club daughters. We get some peace, and our families get the illusion of romantic success."

The suggestion should have sounded ridiculous. Instead, it felt like a lifeline thrown to someone drowning in well-meaning family interference.

"That's... actually brilliant," I said slowly. "But wouldn't it be complicated? Pretending to be something we're not?"

August's smile was soft, almost vulnerable. "Maybe it wouldn't be as much pretending as you think."

Before I could process what that meant, he was pulling out his phone. "My mother's having dinner this Sunday. Family tradition—she cooks enough food for twelve people and interrogates me about my love life between courses. Want to make your debut as my fake girlfriend?"

The word 'fake' should have stung. Instead, all I could focus on was the way August's eyes crinkled when he smiled, the same way they had when he'd helped me understand calculus or listened to me ramble about Ansel Adams.

"I'll need to research," I said, surprising myself with how quickly I'd decided. "Your interests, your career, your family dynamics. If I'm going to be convincing, I need to know everything."

"Maya Thomas, always the perfectionist." His grin was teasing, fond. "Some things never change."

As we exchanged numbers and made plans, I couldn't shake the feeling that some things were about to change everything.
