Chapter 2

I didn't sleep.

I sat in the guest room with the door closed and worked through the night. My laptop screen cast blue light across the walls. I opened files methodically. Bank statements. Credit card records. The mortgage documents I kept in a locked drawer in my desk.

I photographed everything.

The property deed went first. I held my phone steady and captured every line. The apartment — this apartment, the one Desmond had just claimed as his own — was purchased three years before we married. My name only. My mother's life insurance payout. My decision.

I moved to Desmond's government envelope next. He'd left it on the coffee table, propped against the champagne bottle like a trophy. I opened it carefully and read the letter inside.

*We regret to inform you that your application for the position of Policy Analyst has not been successful at this time.*

I read it twice. Then I photographed it. Then I put it back exactly where I found it.

I worked until the sky outside turned gray. I transferred my jewelry to a small lockbox. I packed my mother's watch, the one thing I owned that I could never replace. I backed up every file on my laptop to an external drive and deleted my browser history on the desktop computer in the living room — the one Desmond used, the one where he'd been careless.

Then I started packing his things.

I pulled clothes from the closet. Suits, shirts, shoes. I folded everything neatly and placed it into suitcases I found in the hall closet. His toiletries went into a separate bag. His watch collection. His cufflinks. His framed college diploma.

I worked quietly. Efficiently. I didn't rush.

By six AM, four suitcases stood lined against the wall by the front door.

I made tea. English Breakfast. I poured it into my favorite mug and sat at the kitchen table. The property deed lay flat on the counter beside me, every word visible.

I waited.

At seven-thirty, I heard movement from the master bedroom. Voices. Laughter. The shower ran for fifteen minutes. I sipped my tea and didn't move.

The bedroom door opened at eight.

Desmond walked out first, wearing the shirt he'd had on yesterday, his hair still damp. Zhuri followed a moment later, barefoot again, wearing one of my robes. She saw me at the table and smiled.

"Morning," Desmond said. He stretched, yawning. "So. You ready to sign?"

I set my mug down carefully.

"The apartment is mine," I said.

He blinked. "What?"

"The apartment." I gestured toward the deed on the counter. "I purchased it three years before we married. My name is on the deed. Solely. It's mine."

Desmond stared at me. Then he laughed.

"Aubree, don't be ridiculous. We've lived here for three years. It's ours."

"No," I said. "It's mine."

I stood and walked to the counter. I picked up the deed and held it out toward him.

"Read it."

He crossed the room and snatched the paper from my hand. His eyes moved across the page. I watched his face change. The confusion. The disbelief. The slow, creeping realization.

"This is—" He looked up at me. "This doesn't mean anything. We're married. It's marital property."

"It's not," I said. "It was purchased before the marriage. It's a pre-marital asset. Legally, it's mine. You can call a lawyer if you'd like. They'll tell you the same thing."

Zhuri had gone very still near the hallway. Her smile was gone.

Desmond's jaw tightened. "You can't just kick me out."

"I can," I said. "And I am."

I gestured toward the front door. "Your things are packed. You have thirty minutes to leave. If you're still here after that, I'm calling the police."

"You're insane," he said. His voice was rising now. "You can't do this. This is my home—"

"It's not."

"—I have a career starting Monday—"

"You don't."

That stopped him.

I reached into the folder on the counter and pulled out the photograph I'd taken of his rejection letter. I held it up.

"You didn't pass the exam, Desmond. This is a rejection letter. You opened it, you misread it, and you've been celebrating something that doesn't exist."

His face went white.

"That's not—" He lunged forward, grabbing for the paper. I stepped back and slid it into the folder.

"The original is still on the coffee table," I said. "You can check it yourself."

Zhuri moved toward the door. She didn't say anything. She just picked up her heels from under the coffee table and slipped them on.

Desmond turned on her. "Where are you going?"

"I—" She glanced at me, then at him. "I should go."

"We're not done here," he snapped.

"I think we are," she said quietly.

She walked out. The door closed softly behind her.

Desmond stood in the middle of the living room, breathing hard. His hands were shaking.

I picked up my phone from the table. I opened my contacts and scrolled slowly to the letter P.

"Twenty-eight minutes," I said.

He stared at me. Then he grabbed the first suitcase. Then the second. He dragged them toward the door, his movements jerky and furious. He didn't look at me.

When he reached for the third suitcase, he stopped.

"You're going to regret this," he said.

I looked at him. I didn't blink.

"No," I said. "I'm really not."

He took the last two suitcases and walked out.

The door slammed.

I stood in the silence of my apartment — my apartment — and finished my tea.
