Chapter 3

Desmond walked into Cascade Analytics at nine-fifteen AM carrying a leather messenger bag and the kind of confidence that comes from believing you've already won.

He didn't need to be here. His resignation was already drafted on his phone — three paragraphs of carefully worded triumph that he'd written at a coffee shop an hour earlier, sitting across from Zhuri while she scrolled through apartment listings in Capitol Hill. Places with better views. Better addresses. The kind of places a government policy analyst could afford.

But he wanted to do this in person. He wanted to see Craig Putnam's face when he quit. He wanted the floor to hear it.

He stepped off the elevator and walked straight through the bullpen. Heads turned. He didn't acknowledge them. He went directly to Craig's office and pushed the door open without knocking.

Craig looked up from his computer, frowning. "Desmond. I didn't have you on my calendar."

"You don't." Desmond closed the door behind him and stayed standing. "I'm resigning. Effective immediately."

Craig's expression didn't change. He leaned back in his chair. "I see."

"I got a federal appointment," Desmond continued. "City Hall. Policy Analyst. Starts Monday. So I'm done here."

"Congratulations," Craig said. His tone was flat.

Desmond felt the first flicker of irritation. He'd expected surprise. Maybe even concern. Craig just looked bored.

"I know this puts you in a tough spot," Desmond said. "Losing someone at my level on short notice. But I'm sure you'll figure it out."

Craig nodded slowly. "We will."

Desmond waited. Craig didn't say anything else.

"That's it?" Desmond said.

"What else did you want me to say?"

"I don't know. Maybe ask me to reconsider. Make a counter-offer."

Craig's mouth twitched. It wasn't quite a smile. "No."

Desmond's jaw tightened. "Fine. I'll send the formal resignation email within the hour."

"Great," Craig said. He turned back to his computer.

Desmond stood there for another moment, heat rising in his chest. Then he turned and walked out.

He went back to his desk and opened his laptop. The bullpen was quieter now. People were pretending not to watch him. He could feel their eyes anyway.

He opened his email and pasted the resignation letter he'd drafted. He read it once, added another line about "pursuing opportunities more aligned with my long-term vision," and hit send.

Then he selected every employee in the company directory and forwarded it.

He stood, shouldered his messenger bag, and walked toward the elevator. Halfway across the floor, he stopped and turned.

"Hey," he called out. "Just so you all know — some of us are meant for bigger things."

A few people looked up. Most didn't.

He got on the elevator and rode down to the lobby. He pulled out his phone and opened Instagram. He took a photo of the building's glass entrance behind him, added a champagne emoji and the caption *Government life, here I come 🏛️🥂*, and posted it.

Then he opened his family group chat and typed quickly: *Big news! Just accepted a federal government position at Seattle City Hall. Starting Monday. Drinks on me this weekend!* He attached a digital red envelope with fifty dollars and hit send.

His phone buzzed immediately. Congratulations poured in. His cousin. His aunt. His college roommate. He felt the validation settle warm in his chest.

He was halfway to his car when he remembered he needed to grab his spare charger from his desk. He turned and walked back inside.

That's when he saw her.

Aubree was standing near the security desk, holding a small cardboard box. She was signing something on a clipboard. Her hair was pulled back. She looked tired.

Desmond felt a surge of satisfaction so sharp it was almost physical.

He walked toward her.

"Aubree," he said loudly.

She looked up. Her face didn't change.

A few people in the lobby turned to look. Desmond recognized two analysts from the third floor. Good. Witnesses.

"Finishing up your exit paperwork?" he said. He smiled. "That's rough. Getting walked out the same week I get promoted. Must sting."

Aubree set the clipboard down. She picked up her box.

"You're a washed-up nobody," Desmond continued. His voice carried. "Couldn't even keep a desk job. But hey — at least you tried, right?"

She looked at him for a long moment. Then she walked past him toward the door.

She didn't say a word.

Desmond watched her go. He felt the eyes of the lobby on him. He shrugged and grinned at the analysts near the elevator.

"Some people just can't handle the pressure," he said.

They didn't respond.

He walked back outside and got in his car. He sat there for a moment, scrolling through the responses in his group chat. His phone buzzed again. Another congratulations. Another celebration.

He didn't see the email that Craig Putnam sent to HR three minutes after Desmond's resignation landed in his inbox.

*Process immediately. No counter-offer. Backfill at lower band.*

He didn't hear the conversation Craig had with his deputy ten minutes later, discussing how much money they'd save by hiring someone younger and cheaper.

He didn't know that his six-figure position had already been eliminated, restructured, and posted internally at sixty percent of his former salary.

He just sat in his car, watching his phone light up with congratulations, and felt like he'd finally won something.
