Chapter 4

The door slammed shut behind me with a thunderous crash, the sound reverberating off the cold walls like a final verdict. The click of the lock followed, sharp and unrelenting—like a coffin being sealed.

I’d been thrown into the basement. No sunlight. No escape. A single, buzzing bulb flickered overhead like a dying star. In the far corner, a rusted cot sat waiting, and beside it—on the cold cement—lay a chipped bowl of lifeless gray slop and a cloudy cup of water. Like a grotesque gesture of survival.

I didn’t shed tears.

I didn’t scream or beg.

But my hands refused to stop shaking as I lowered myself onto the hard floor, the cold seeping into my bones like rot.

Then, his voice arrived.

Low. Merciless. Saturated with control.

“You breathe because I allow it. Don’t forget that.”

He moved in close—his mouth grazing the shell of my ear—and then he left, his footsteps fading like thunder retreating into a storm.

I stayed rooted, not just from the chill, but from the clarity that settled in its place:

This wasn’t a bluff.

Titanis wasn’t merely a tech empire. It housed sensitive global intelligence—defense schematics, war-grade weapon tech, data that could tilt the balance of global power.

And he wanted access. Through me.

He would burn everything, including my father’s legacy—maybe the world—just to claim it.

Time melted into a gray sludge.

Every day bled into the next.

Pale food. Measured water. Unbroken silence.

I tried speaking to the guards once. Pleaded. Their eyes stared through me, lifeless. Obedient. Hollow. As if they’d been trained to forget I existed.

Evander didn’t need chains or bruises to break me. His greatest weapon was isolation. Oblivion.

And when I believed it couldn’t possibly deepen, she came.

Arden.

Her heels clacked arrogantly against the stone, every step soaked in triumph. She stood just beyond the cell bars, impeccably dressed... in my belongings.

My silk robe clung to her figure. My heirloom necklace—my mother’s—rested on her neck. Even the ruby ring glinted on her thumb, mocking me.

“You always dressed like a schoolteacher,” she cooed, smiling like poison. “But don’t worry, sweetheart. Your closet finally found someone worthy.”

My nails bit into my palms.

“And the bed upstairs?” she added with a bright laugh. “Let’s just say, it’s finally getting some warmth again.”

She giggled. A cold, echoing sound that bounced off the stone like a ghost.

Her footsteps halted inches from the bars, her grin curling even wider—like a predator savoring the final moments.

“You know,” she murmured, toying with the gold locket around her throat—my locket, “I used to dream about what it must be like to be you. The golden prodigy of Titanis. Daddy’s pride and joy. The perfect one.”

She leaned in, her voice dipping into a cruel whisper. “Now? I just pity you.”

From her coat, she pulled out a picture—faded at the edges. One of the few keepsakes I’d hidden in my drawer. My mother and I, smiling, arms wrapped tight.

Her grin sharpened. Then she ripped the photo down the middle. Right through our faces.

“She hated you, you know,” she sneered, letting the halves drift to the ground like ashes. “She always said you were a reminder of all her mistakes. But me? She believed I had potential.”

Lies. All of it. But still, her words pierced like glass.

Her tone softened again, dripping with false sympathy.

“You always had the spotlight. The awards. The press. The perfect résumé.” She paused, tapping her flat stomach. “But guess what?”

My teeth ground together.

“I can give Evander what you can’t,” she whispered.

She savored the words. “A child. A real heir. The one he wants. Not some tragic reminder of your failed body.”

She giggled.

“After all those losses... chemical pregnancies... what’s even left in there, huh? Your womb’s a mausoleum.”

I lunged—but the steel bars held me back.

She didn’t flinch.

“Struck a nerve?” she cooed. “Oops. I forgot how sensitive you are about being... barren.”

She smoothed the robe like it was couture.

“But me? I’m everything you weren’t. Evander doesn’t recoil when he touches me. He groans. With you? He endured you. The geek he tolerated until someone better came along—someone with more than spreadsheets and tears.”

She crouched, lowering her voice like a dagger to the throat.

“You want to know the funniest part?” she whispered. “I used to hate you. Everyone wanted me to be you. Even though my family had more wealth. More clout. Still—‘Why can’t you be like Nerina?’ ‘Why can’t you be smarter, Arden?’”

Her lip curled. “All I ever heard. And now? Look at you. Starving. Discarded. A stain no one will clean.”

She rose, brushing off the robe with theatrical elegance.

“Thanks for the clothes. The empire. The man. You’ll rot down here while I raise Titanis’s next ruler... in your bed.”

She blew me a kiss, then turned away. Her laughter left cracks in the silence.

When the noise died, I stared at the photo remnants on the floor. My mother’s eyes. My own young face.

My hand drifted to my stomach.

No.

She could wear my diamonds. Sleep in my sheets. Mock my legacy.

But she’d never inherit my destiny.

He could trap me in this cell, but he would never possess what grew inside me.

I looked at the metal door, dust-covered and dull. But in the blur, I saw my reflection.

Where was she?

Where was Nerina Theon—the heir to Obsidian Vanta, the strategist with steel in her veins and an empire in her DNA?

My fingers curled again over my stomach. The only place that still felt alive.

Three heartbeats.

Not just my own.

Three small reasons to endure.

He could strip me of everything. But he would never take them.

---

I waited.

Days passed.

I feigned weakness. Let my limbs sag. My eyes dulled. My breath shallow. I rehearsed fragility.

And when the guard finally came—tall, weary, impatient—I fell against him like a dying shadow.

“W-water,” I rasped. Barely audible.

He caught me.

Fatal mistake.

My hand slid against his belt. Found the weapon before he could blink.

Cold steel met skin.

Crack.

The pistol’s butt collided with his skull. He dropped like a marionette with its strings cut.

Before he hit the ground, I had the keycard.

I bolted.

Not fast. My body ached. But fury sharpened every nerve.

I knew this place. Every turn, every creak.

I crept into Evander’s office.

He hadn’t changed a thing.

The desk sat there—regal, smug, untouched by remorse.

I slid open the drawer with trembling hands. And placed two objects inside:

My wedding ring. Twisted. Scarred. Still carrying my heat.

And the sonogram.

Three tiny silhouettes. Black and white. Irrefutable.

Three lives he’d never control.

It wasn’t just goodbye.

It was a warning. A curse. A promise.

Because I had reclaimed the truth.

And I’d turned the tables.

The sonogram wasn’t meant to break him—not yet.

It was meant to haunt him.

To whisper in his dreams: You failed.

He had tried to rewrite the future.

But that future still lived—inside me. Untouched. Sacred.

Because I wasn’t fleeing to survive.

I was escaping to evolve.

And when I returned, it wouldn’t be as his puppet.

I’d be the predator.

“You bled my legacy dry,” I would say, “Now I’ll drown you in it.”

Not a captive.

Not a wife.

Not anymore.
