Chapter 5

Behind the rich mahogany shelves in Evander’s office, there was a secret compartment—an illusion masterfully designed to hide a vault that could rival any military-grade fortress. Retinal scan, biometric fingerprint, personal passphrase—layers upon layers of arrogant security. But arrogance was always his downfall.

It took me less than five minutes to break through.

Foolish man.

He believed devotion was a leash, something you tighten until there’s no room to breathe. He assumed that by marrying me, he’d sealed my loyalty forever. But he forgot one crucial truth—I was born under Titanis. I grew up with secrets tangled into my DNA, raised to decode silence and weaponize trust. And above all, I remembered how to disappear in plain sight.

Inside the vault, buried behind piles of illicit currency and damning records, was a compact, matte-black hard drive—simple in appearance, catastrophic in potential.

I didn’t need to open it to know.

It held footage—surveillance, audio logs, unredacted documents. The kind of material that could unravel governments.

Unacknowledged Titanis strike missions.

Illegal arms deals processed under dummy treaties.

Target eliminations—each file bearing Evander’s signature.

It was all disguised under my father’s name. But now, I saw clearly—Titanis wasn’t just corrupted. It was infected. And Evander was the venom.

With nowhere left to run, I did the one thing I’d sworn never to do.

I called him.

Matteo Ricci.

The man who once promised to build a future with me in it.

Now? A powerhouse in the legal world. Three global offices. A rooftop penthouse that watched over the city like a fortress. But his public life was just camouflage.

Beneath the surface, Matteo was a ghost. Known only in whispers. Feared across syndicates. The enigmatic “Mr. X.” No one had seen his face in over six years, but everyone recognized his calling card: a cold metal "X" left behind like a signature.

He answered the call on the first ring.

“Nerina,” he said, voice low and calm—lethal in its restraint.

“I… I need you,” I murmured, voice barely a breath.

“Tell me where you are.”

“I’m in hiding. I have something… dangerous.”

A beat of silence.

Then: “Anything you need.”

And with that, I almost crumbled. Just a little.

Because once, I left him. Not because my feelings were gone—but because my father deemed him unworthy. Matteo wasn’t influential enough. Not powerful enough. My father made it clear: if I chose Sal, he’d ruin him.

So I chose Evander, thinking it was the smarter move. Safer. Strategically sound for Titanis. I convinced myself I could love Evander.

What a spectacular lie.

What I got in return was ruin. Betrayal, imprisonment, blood on my hands and chains around my throat.

Sal set up a rendezvous at a safehouse nestled in the shadowed edges of Montana’s wilderness. No hesitation. No questions. He opened the door the moment I arrived and wrapped his arms around me like time had never passed.

Like I still mattered.

---

That night, I accessed the Titanis shadow network.

An encrypted line—one that only my father and I ever knew existed. It required layers of clearance: three passcodes, a retinal scan, and my mother’s wedding ring—its gem embedded with a coded thermal signature.

My father’s face flickered onto the monitor.

“Nerina?” he asked, confused, worried.

“Dad, you have to listen. Evander is gutting Titanis from the inside. He’s moving faster than you think. You need to disappear—now.”

He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Honey, I know this is hard, but Evander loves you. You’re not yourself. This paranoia—let’s talk in person—”

Gunshots. Three of them.

Loud. Final.

My heart stuttered. I screamed his name.

The screen went haywire, pixelated, then stabilized just long enough to show blood splattering across his shirt. His eyes locked on mine—before they went lifeless. His body fell backward.

Gone.

Then a hand crept into frame. Slow. Confident.

Evander.

He leaned into the camera, smiling like he’d finally stepped into his truest self.

“Bit of a mess,” he drawled.

I gasped, too stunned to cry.

“You murdered him.”

He tilted his head. “I gave you a choice. You didn’t listen.”

And then Arden appeared beside him. Draped in crimson silk. Wearing one of my ruby necklaces like it was a crown. She swirled her wine glass and smirked into the mic.

“Oh Nerina, darling,” she cooed. “You really thought breaking your chains made you free?”

She stepped closer to the lens, voice purring like poison.

“Your daddy didn’t suffer long, if that helps. Though his eyes are still wide open. So... haunting.”

I screamed, launching the laptop across the room in blind fury.

Matteo snatched it mid-air, muscles tense, jaw clenched as the final image on the screen froze: Evander and Arden grinning, victorious.

His voice came out low. Steel wrapped in velvet.

“I’m going to end them.”

The calm in his tone was more terrifying than their laughter.

---

That night, I tucked myself into the corner of the underground bunker. Sal’s men surrounded the perimeter—merciless warriors who’d carved their own legends into the underworld. The hard drive was under maximum lock, protected by a man once known for torching a drug cartel after they harmed his sister.

By dawn, Evander had declared me a fugitive.

A five-million-dollar bounty.

Digital wanted posters.

Encrypted messages flooding every dark net.

The name Nerina Mortis became cursed. A ghost. A myth. A liability. The woman who betrayed Titanis and stole its secrets.

One by one, Evander dismantled everything my father built. Titanis facilities were stormed. My name was purged from official records. He was rewriting the story with surgical cruelty.

But what he didn’t know?

I wasn’t shattered.

I was sharpening.

Matteo moved me again—this time, deeper into the Rockies. No IDs. No traceable tech. No names spoken aloud.

Inside the mountain stronghold, we started to build something new.

A false trail. A staged death.

A myth that Nerina Mortis had vanished for good.

While behind the curtain, we plotted.

Not escape.

Revenge.

I wasn’t coming back as Evander’s abandoned wife.

I was coming back as the reckoning he never saw coming.
