Chapter 2

Emily felt strangely adrift in the city that, until yesterday, had been her entire world. With nowhere else to go, she returned to the apartment she had once shared with Jeremy. The sight of the familiar space—the home she’d poured her heart into, meticulously decorating in hopes of building a future—felt hollow now. She’d hoped this place would become a sanctuary for their new life together, but today, it felt like a stranger’s home.

As she walked through the quiet apartment, her eyes caught sight of the red paper cutouts on the dining table. She had spent hours cutting out the traditional “double happiness” characters, replaying online tutorials until she could make each one perfectly even and delicate. She’d been proud of her handiwork, imagining them decorating the walls on their wedding day.

When she’d first shown them to Jeremy, though, he’d barely looked up, muttering, “They look...cheap. Why waste your time?”

But Emily knew his reaction had been about more than the decorations; it had been about her. He hadn’t seen her as the bride she dreamed of being.

Determined, she picked up the red cutouts, pausing for a moment to remember the joy she’d felt while making them, then tore them to pieces. She watched the fragments drift to the floor. This was only the first of many things she would discard today.

Emily worked steadily, going through every room, gathering the remnants of a future she had once believed in: a pair of matching coffee mugs, half-finished wedding DIYs, an album she’d been collecting for their honeymoon. Each item went into a large trash bag and by late afternoon, the apartment was emptier than it had ever been.

Exhausted, she decided that the last thing she wanted to do was cook. She scrolled through a delivery app and ordered the first thing that caught her eye. It would be simple, impersonal and that’s what she wanted right now.

It was just past seven o’clock when she heard the sound of keys at the door. Jeremy walked in, carrying a bakery box, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the apartment looked different.

He placed the box on the table, a small smile on his face. “Emily,” he said, calling out to her. “I got you something—a treat. Isn’t this your favorite?”

Emily raised an eyebrow, eyeing the box with a half-smile. The faint smell of durian wafted toward her. She stifled a grimace, covering her nose. “Durian cake? Jeremy, you know I can’t stand durian.”

Jeremy’s smile faltered, replaced by a look of mild annoyance. “Well, it’s not like I could remember that, could I? Who keeps track of every little thing?”

Emily felt a pang of frustration rise within her. “Funny,” she said, her voice sharp, “because I’m pretty sure it’s Miranda’s favorite.”

His face tightened, but he forced a laugh. “Fine, you’re being dramatic. I thought you’d appreciate a treat. But hey, if you’re not interested, then never mind.”

She shot him a cold look, walking away. “Then maybe you should bring it to her instead.”

As she moved toward the bedroom, Jeremy raised his voice from the kitchen. “Wait, you didn’t make dinner?” he asked, sounding genuinely surprised.

Without turning back, Emily replied calmly, “I figured you’d be out late again, so I didn’t see the point.”

He sighed, tossing his keys onto the counter. “You know what? Fine. I’ll just grab something at the office. I still have work to catch up on.”

Emily heard him shuffling in the entryway, struggling with his shoes. It was almost as if he wanted her to stop him, to ask him to stay. But she was done asking.

The door closed with a loud thud and the apartment fell silent once more. Emily took a deep breath, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over her. She stripped the bed of the linens they’d once shared, replacing them with fresh sheets and moving into the guest room. For the first time in months, she slept deeply, not caring where Jeremy was or who he was with.

The next morning, Emily awoke feeling lighter, as if a weight had lifted from her heart. There was no sign of Jeremy and she realized with satisfaction that she no longer cared.

Dressing quickly, she gathered her belongings and headed to work, her resignation letter neatly folded in her bag. As soon as she reached the office, she went straight to her manager’s desk and handed it over.

Her manager looked up in surprise, skimming the letter. “Emily, are you sure about this? We’d hate to lose you. You’re one of our best.”

She gave him a polite, grateful smile. “Thank you, really. But I need a fresh start.” Her voice was steady, but there was a newfound determination behind it.

Her manager nodded, understanding. “Well, if you ever need a reference, you know where to find us.”

Emily thanked him and left, feeling a mixture of relief and nervous excitement as she stepped out of the building. This job had been her anchor in the city, a part of the future she’d envisioned with Jeremy. But it was time to let it go.

As she walked outside, she thought about calling her best friend, the one person in the city she knew she could still count on. Just as she unlocked her phone, her screen lit up with a message from her friend.

Her heart dropped as she opened the message, a photo staring back at her. In it, Jeremy was rushing into a hospital, holding none other than Miranda in his arms.

The message below was from her friend:

[Emily, what’s going on here? Isn’t that Jeremy? And who’s this woman he’s with?]

Emily felt a mix of anger and heartbreak rising within her. She took a shaky breath, struggling to hold herself together as she typed a response.

[Yeah, that’s Jeremy. And that’s… Miranda. Long story, but we’re done.]

Her friend replied almost instantly.

[Emily, I’m so sorry. Come over tonight? We’ll binge terrible movies and eat ice cream until it all feels better.]

Emily smiled weakly, comforted by the offer. She typed back a quick [I’d love that.] and pocketed her phone. Her friend’s support was exactly what she needed right now.

She took one last look at the photo of Jeremy and Miranda. His face looked frantic, his arms wrapped protectively around her. It was as if he’d been waiting for any excuse to rush to Miranda’s side, just as he’d done time and again over the last few months.

A surge of clarity washed over her. She no longer felt hurt or betrayed. Instead, she felt relieved, liberated from the weight of his excuses, of her constant need to believe in him despite his lies.

With that, Emily turned and walked away from the life she’d once thought she wanted.
