Emily’s Journey Through Deceit and Desire Chapter 1

Five years. Emily and her boyfriend, Jeremy, had shared five years of love, laughter and dreams. This was supposed to be their year—the year they would marry. She’d imagined every detail: the flowers, the music, the way he’d look at her as she walked down the aisle. But that was before she returned.

Miranda. The girl he’d once loved, his so-called “white moonlight.” From the moment Miranda reappeared in his life, Jeremy had changed. Every time Miranda called, he dropped everything to be with her, leaving Emily alone with a fading sense of warmth where their future had once been.

Today was supposed to be special—the day Emily would finally try on her wedding dress. She’d waited with nervous excitement, imagining how Jeremy would look at her, but her excitement turned to hurt as minutes stretched into hours. Then, at last, he arrived, only for his phone to buzz moments later.

Emily watched as he read the message, his expression hardening. “I’m sorry, Emily. Something happened—Miranda’s in trouble,” he muttered, barely meeting her gaze as he headed toward the door.

Desperation seized her. “Jeremy, can’t she ask someone else? Just this once?” she pleaded, reaching out to gently hold the edge of his coat. “You’ve canceled on me so many times already. Please… stay.”

Jeremy pulled his coat free, his eyes flashing with impatience. “Emily, don’t be so selfish. You know she doesn’t have anyone else here. I’m all she has,” he said, his voice sharp.

Emily felt her heart drop, her hand falling to her side as she murmured, almost to herself, “Is it selfish to want my own fiancé to be here for me?”

But he was already gone. She barely registered the distant slam of the door as she stood frozen, trying to grasp what had just happened.

The store attendant appeared beside her, concern written on her face. “Ma’am, is everything alright? Hasn’t your fiancé arrived yet?”

Emily forced a shaky smile, even as she felt tears welling in her eyes. “I’m sorry… I won’t be able to try on the dress today. I’ve wasted your time.”

The attendant’s face softened. “Oh, don’t worry. We can reschedule whenever you’re ready,” she said kindly.

But Emily knew there would be no “next time.” She’d held on for as long as she could, giving Jeremy one last chance to prove he could put her first and he’d left her behind without a second thought.

She wiped her tears and left the store, feeling the finality of her decision weigh heavily on her.

An hour later, Emily sat alone in the dressing room, her mind racing with everything that had happened. Without thinking, she pulled out her phone and dialed her mother’s number.

The phone rang twice before her mother’s warm voice answered, “Emily? Oh, sweetheart, are you alright?”

Emily took a breath, steadying herself. “Mom, I’ll be there for your birthday,” she began, her voice quiet but resolute. “And… I’m not bringing Jeremy. I’m calling off the engagement.”

A brief silence hung between them before her mother finally spoke, her voice laced with concern. “Emily… what happened? Are you sure about this?”

Emily blinked back tears, forcing herself to stay calm. “I’ve been sure for a long time, Mom. I just didn’t want to admit it,” she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. “I’ll be there soon and I’m ready to meet whoever you think I should. I trust you.”

Her mother hesitated, the worry evident in her tone. “Emily, you don’t have to make any decisions right now. I just want you to come home and feel safe, okay?”

Emily managed a weak smile, grateful for her mother’s support. “I know, Mom. I’ll see you soon.”

After hanging up, Emily stared at the calendar on her phone. Ten days until her mother’s birthday—a week and a half to put everything behind her. Just enough time to tie up the loose ends in her life before heading home to start over.

The night before, Emily had stayed up late, wondering if things might finally go smoothly today. She’d spent weeks planning everything perfectly. She’d even gone over the schedule with Jeremy that morning, reminding him just how important this day was.

And yet… his promise had been as empty as all the others.

This hadn’t been the first time Miranda had come between them. For the past six months, Emily had watched Jeremy’s attention drift, his priorities slipping further and further from their future. Each time, she’d tried to be understanding, telling herself it was just a passing phase. But today, standing in that bridal shop alone, Emily knew she’d been fooling herself.

A painful truth settled in her chest, sharp and cold. She could feel her hands trembling as she clutched her phone, but she wouldn’t let herself falter.

She opened their last text exchange and typed a single line.

[I hope Miranda is worth everything you gave up.]

With that, Emily pressed “send,” her finger hovering over the “block” button just a moment longer before she finally tapped it, ending the connection with a sense of finality she’d never thought she’d have.

Later that week, back in her hometown, Emily found herself at a quiet café, sitting across from a well-dressed man with a calm demeanor. Her mother had arranged the blind date, urging her to meet someone new, to start fresh.

As they exchanged polite conversation, Emily’s thoughts drifted, barely focusing on his words. She felt hollow, as though part of her was still back in the city, sorting through the remnants of the life she’d just left.

But then, as she raised her cup to take a sip of coffee, a familiar voice cut through the quiet buzz of the café, loud and angry.

“Emily! What are you doing here?”

She looked up, startled to see Jeremy standing in the doorway, eyes blazing as he stalked toward her.

“Are you serious?” he demanded, ignoring the man seated across from her. “Have you already forgotten that you’re supposed to be my fiancée? Who gave you permission to go on a blind date?”

Emily felt a surge of indignation rise within her. She stood up slowly, meeting his gaze with a calmness that belied the storm of emotions churning inside her. “And who,” she replied icily, “gave you the right to decide who I can or can’t see?”

Jeremy’s face twisted in anger. “You’re mine, Emily. We have five years together. You can’t just throw that away.”

A bitter laugh escaped her. “Five years together? You mean five years of me waiting around for you, watching as you run to her every time she calls?” She took a steadying breath, finally voicing the words that had been trapped inside her heart for so long. “You’ve already thrown us away, Jeremy. I just finally accepted it.”

He opened his mouth to respond, but the words seemed to die in his throat. For the first time, Emily saw a flicker of something resembling regret in his eyes, but it was too late. She’d given him chance after chance and he’d made his choice every single time.

She turned to her date, offering him a small, apologetic smile. “I’m sorry you had to witness this,” she said softly, before turning back to Jeremy. “Goodbye, Jeremy. I hope Miranda was worth it.”

And with that, Emily walked out of the café, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders as she left her past behind, ready to finally embrace her future.
